State gun laws, gun ownership, and mass shootings in the US

https://www.bmj.com/content/364/bmj.l542

Money shot:

Results Fully adjusted regression analyses showed that a 10 unit increase in state gun law permissiveness was associated with a significant 11.5% (95% confidence interval 4.2% to 19.3%, P=0.002) higher rate of mass shootings. A 10% increase in state gun ownership was associated with a significant 35.1% (12.7% to 62.7%, P=0.001) higher rate of mass shootings. Partially adjusted regression analyses produced similar results, as did analyses restricted to domestic and non-domestic mass shootings.

Conclusions States with more permissive gun laws and greater gun ownership had higher rates of mass shootings, and a growing divide appears to be emerging between restrictive and permissive states.

Re: Guns For Everyone!: Another Mass Shooting!

Gun laws in New Zealand

Gun licences are issued at the discretion of the police in New Zealand provided the police consider the person to be of good standing[citation needed] and without criminal, psychiatric or drug issues as well as meeting other conditions such as having suitable storage facilities. They must be issued for a valid reason[citation needed]. Several different categories of licenses are permitted, with the lowest one permitting access to restricted semi-automatic rifles and shotguns, with limited capacity, while the higher levels which permit fully automatic weaponry and pistols are rarely issued to civilians.

Seems the prototype for what some are calling for in the US. And NZ is an island so it should have control to access. And still.

PS - I'm still against anyone but military having access to fully automatic weapons.

Why? Per the reading of the Constitution as read currently by the NRA that law is Unconstitutional. Sure, Heller is the law of the land, but the Heller decision could easily be thrown out by the right Court. Why give up now? You've gotten this far, take it all the way.

Unlike the UK and Australia, New Zealand does not ban the ownership of semi-automatic military-style assault weapons. Most guns can be legally sold on the internet or through newspaper ads. Any person aged 16 or over with an entry-level firearm licence can keep any number of common rifles and shotguns without having to register them.

“New Zealand’s decision not to register 96% of civilian firearms makes it a standout exception, alone with the United States and Canada,” Alpers said.

Over the past year, New Zealand has seen a renewed debate over what police have called loopholes in the way military-style semi-automatic (MSSA) rifles are defined by law. Possession of MSSA rifles is supposed to be subject to a higher level of scrutiny from the police, and there are only about 15,000 registered in civilian hands, as of last year.

But because of the way MSSA firearms are defined by law, guns with slightly different features but virtually the same function can fall outside of the stricter regulations. Both police and firearms enthusiasts noted that a rifle could be transformed into a MSSA simply by adding a larger-capacity magazine.

Go easy on Flaggy. His mom was too busy getting bent over a pool table in a dive bar to teach him how not to be a sociopath.

I’m a big fan of Sonny Bill Williams and he released a very touching and emotional video(he’s Muslim for those that don’t know.) Its gutwrenching to see such a wonderful place go through something like this and my heart goes out to all of them.

Re: Guns For Everyone!: Another Mass Shooting!

I try to give you folks a wide berth. Unless you lied when you registered, you're all adults and quite capable of making your own decisions. When you come into threads like these you know what you're getting into. However there is an obvious line that cannot be crossed and it was late last night. All posts related in that subthread have been removed and the poster in question has been given a two week suspension. For future reference: Reporting the post to the moderators for action is the correct method to deal with things like this. Telling the person to kill himself is not.

I find most of this post filled with many questionable stances. Are we really all adults? Look at our postings around here...
And the outcome of their posts seems to be going their way, so was it truly not the best way to go about things? Hm....

:D
