Gulf Oil Spill 2010

Re: Gulf Oil Spill 2010

So, sharktopus and earth farts aside, what if the government "forced" BP to remove the cap? Who is responsible for that oil? :D

Re: Gulf Oil Spill 2010

There was talk of some methane exploding and causing a tsunami. That would suck

Anybody who suggests that has a serious deficiency in general chemistry knowledge. I would put the chance of the methane exploding underwater at exactly zero unless there are oxidation sources available of which I am unaware.

Or by "exploding" do they mean "escaping"? Still seems vanishingly unlikely for there to be a breakout that would be big enough and fast enough to cause a problem.

I think "explode" might be in the generic sense... what about a giant gas bubble surfacing?

Re: Gulf Oil Spill 2010

Like this.

It's not an energy release that's the problem, it's the sudden displacement of all oxygen. Essentially, it's a giant halon system, and people go out along with the fire.

However, both together, combined with a giant shark, would make a fairly tame SyFy Channel movie.

Hmm. Seems like an interesting atmospheric dispersion problem. I wouldn't guess that it would stick together enough to threaten anyone a significant distance from the wellsite, but my expertise in the area is basically nonexistent.

Yeah, that could cause some problems... but how big would it have to be to cause a tsunami? I'm thinking it would have to be enormous, and I'd question whether any feature of the well as it is now would allow an enormous sudden escape. Large and sustained, yes, but that's a different problem.

Re: Gulf Oil Spill 2010

You know, between the spill itself, the possible collusion with Libya to get the Pan Am bomber released on a bogus health claim, and, well... this...

BP acknowledges it posted on its website an altered photo that exaggerates the activity at its Gulf oil spill command centre in Houston.

The picture posted over the weekend showed workers monitoring a bank of 10 giant video screens displaying underwater images.

The spokesman Scott Dean said yesterday that three screens were blank in the original picture and a staff photographer used Photoshop software to add images.

BP looks like they're trying to set the gold standard for "stereotypical evil corporation."

Re: Gulf Oil Spill 2010

The kicker was that the photo's metadata dates it to 2001.

Apparently, nobody told BP's public relations people about teh tech blogs.

Agreed. Until the concentration hits 15% (and stays above 5%) it's not going to burn or explode. If there was a giant bubble that escaped, it wouldn't be flammable until after it reached the surface and started to disperse.

So the original had 7 of the 10 with something on them, and they felt the need to photoshop the last 3? With images already on the other screens? What really is the point of it, it's not like people would have gotten on their case if only 3 of the 10 didn't have something on them?

AFAIK, the whole thing was bogus.

It's not to say they don't have a command central somewhere . . . it's just funny that the pic on their website was stunningly inauthentic.

BP’s embattled chief executive will collect a pay and pension package worth at least £11.8 million when he falls on his sword this week. The oil giant is hoping that Tony Hayward’s departure will finally draw a line under its role in the Gulf of Mexico disaster. Five days after The Times revealed that Mr Hayward was set to quit the oil giant, the board of BP
