Got Snow?

Re: Got Snow?

Was right behind a tanker truck spraying the roads already with what I'm guessing to be a salt brine this afternoon. the ****storm ain't even expected to hit until about mid morning here. probably about 7 or 8 before it starts, and not suppost to be really cranking until about 10 am. Lucky for me, it should be fine for me to be in class tomorrow at 9.

Re: Got Snow?

612 could get up to 9" today/tonight. Which is probably the storm that will hit the East coast in a day or two.

As it turns out, everything is still open here. :p

We have snow plows and salting trucks here, and it was still slow traveling this morning, and will be again tonight.

Re: Got Snow?

That is rough. Some people were telling me it was probably more time efficient for them to walk from u street to foggy bottom to work rather than risk the metro wait and transfer.

I still live in Crystal City, so we're basically cut off. I'm moving back to the District in a month, so I've got to enjoy using this excuse while I can.
There go your taxes!!!

BTW, I live in Montgomery County, MD. There is around 3' of snow on my street. No plows anywhere. Elections have consequences for the idiot government that provides millions in bennies, but can't clear the flippin streets!

Re: Got Snow?

My girlfriend's family lives in Silver Spring and they have gotten 36" of snow in the past week. Thats just plain crazy!
They didnt have power Saturday-noon on Sunday (and had no heat either).
Part of me feels really sorry for the people of DC for having to deal with that much snow and a part of me says, "at least it aint here!"
BTW, they are forecasting 4-7" for Madison and they are saying they could get 12-15" in the Milwaukee area. Thats really not all that big of a deal. It will be just enough to make everything look pretty again.

I was just at my buddy's house in Bethesda for the Super Bowl (he picked me up in his off road tested Jeep). It seemed like the major roads were mainly cleared, but once you got into the neighborhood, anarchy reigned. It was nice to drink a few beers outside by a fire pit though.;)

Re: Got Snow?

Thanks to our fair mayor wanting to be all flinty, I'm at work. Had to take the Metro in - still operating underground only and single-tracking - and had to switch lines to do so. Yeesh.

to be fair, I think those live in the district could probably get to work in a lot of cases. Though, yeah, its kind of a bummer to work when everybody else is out sledding. Me, I did my taxes today and I'm working on small chores.

I'm surprised he tried open schools... if the roads are crud then kids can't get there. I wonder how they pay the teachers... is it based on the number of days or something else. Its not like we're looking at going 2 weeks over like I've seen in Boston.

I'll say this point blank... in metro Boston this is a week off from school... period. I'm surprised they were going to open that fast. That being said, I don't know what usually happens with city/state gov't in Massachusetts.

Also, i haven't seen this, but I get the feeling that the Metro (subway) got incredibly behind this storm... that's life but i have to figure that's why we still haven't seen a partial re-opening of the outdoor stations.

BGTD, I can't imagine that's all that fun. I haven't had anywhere to go but that really does kill things.

Re: Got Snow?

We have another snow storm in coming to the DC region and are apprently on track for a record winter if this thing hits its projected ten inch snowfall. I'm basically prepared to not go to work until Friday.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/capitalweathergang/

Yeah I just heard from my mom on that. I guess it was originally supposed to be a few more inches but now they've upped it to close to a foot. Same with her area, the main roads are good but the side roads and neighborhoods have only a thin lane plowed, if anything, and at some points the plowing abruptly stops.

As someone who grew up in the DC area, I feel gyped. Aside from the blizzards of 93 and 96, every year we would hear multiple times that we were going to get several inches and then ended up the next morning with a dusting and a 2 hour delay if we were lucky. Kids this year get spoiled with lots of snow and school closings.

Re: Got Snow?

if the next storm is supposed to start early-afternoon why even bother opening up the federal government? I'd be half skittish about the metro... what happens if they even get 2 inches? Does that become enough to shut down the lines?

Re: Got Snow?

You have more snow on the ground right now than Houghton.

That should never happen. EVER.

I'll keep the PK Ditty and burning kittens going for you.

I think I know who to blame for that:

Oh, come on now. We've gotten 3x the average snowfall here, which will blow a hole even in the most conservative plowing budget.

People here in the mid-Atlantic have a funny idea about snow plowing - they seem to think that plows make the snow just disappear. Actually, they move it around, and it all has to go someplace.

However, I do find it quite interesting that the District's been far better at plowing their streets than any of the MD or VA jurisdictions.

Yeah, well, they Mayor kinda painted himself in a corner. I'd have no issue with DC being open today if the Metro were up and running, but since it's not, it was a bad move. They didn't even offer liberal leave.

As far as schools go, it was stupid to even think about it. Again, without a truly functioning Metro, you can't effectively get around. Lots of kids use it to get to school.

Yeah, but there was an article in the paper today about how schools might extend into summer by a week to make up for all the missed days.

Re: Got Snow?

according to various sources the federal gov't in the beltway is closed tomorrow... but the OPM website has crashed harder than a pallet of anvils.

edit: Local FOX confirms

Maybe the person who runs the website didn't report to work. ;)

Actually, it says the gov't is indeed closed again.

It wasn't always like that. They have many more plows and contracts with private companies for plowing than they once did.

it goes without saying... the ability to dig out depends on how many plow you have got going. Where I'm from my city of 40K (Fitchburg) is more or less a dual city with the next door city of 40K (Leominster)... we have the terrain disadvantage and lay claim to the "second hilliest city in the US"... yet we have a fraction of the "snow days" from school as Leominster does because all the plows are out there. The Blizzard of 93 we were out 2 days, Leominster was out 5 and points Boston were out 5-10 days. It really is a matter of the amount of manpower you have going. If every 10th guy has a plow on his front then things are going to happen much faster when its every 800th guy.

Yeah, it was slow travelling today. I was supposed to pick up my taxes in Crystal at 9 before I started work at 10 (live at Mtka/Plymouth border and work in Plymouth). That wasn't happening, so I had to reschedule.

I didn't even touch the highways today, due to traffic. No one was moving.

I drove into downtown on 100-394 but I left about 6:40 AM - no problem, just a little slow. I drove to my chiropractor appointment down 35W and 62 but left the office about 3:55 PM - a little slow, but no real problem there either. Went to pick the kid up from hockey practice in Richfield, took 66th street to avoid 62, again, just a little slow. I think everyone panicked and left work early, then stayed home.
