Goon’s Top 20 pre-season ranking

Re: Goon’s Top 20 pre-season ranking

Re: Goon’s Top 20 pre-season ranking

If they were high in those statistical categories then they were deficient somewhere else that contributed to their finish in 5th place. Over the course of a season, the anomalies usually work themselves out. It wasn't a freak accident they finished in 5th place.

Well, they started the year 6-8 in HE play. Obviously they figured out whatever problems they had as the year went on though. I'd expect this year's team to more closely resemble last year's second-half numbers (11-4-2 from Jan. 22 on) than first-half numbers.

yeah, so UML had BU down 4-2 going into the third. Big deal. So did Miami going into the final minute of the NC game and I can tell you that Miami was better than UML having seen them both play a number of games (live not on TV) late in the season including the HE FF and National FF.

Having BU down 4-2 was not a big deal. Actually beating them at the final buzzer would have been an accomplishment.

I don't think I ever mentioned BU in my argument about why UML will have a great year.

I am not yet completely sold on Lowell yet. Yes, I know they bring everybody back. Everybody from a 5th place team. Tons of potential no doubt and they could very well win the league. However, until they do something to prove themselves, I don't think they should be annointed to be the favorites of HEA.

I can see them having a very similiar season to Northeastern last year. A very strong start with all the veteran support. Other teams catching up to them once their younger players gain a little more experience. Top teams exposing some weaknesses when there is a big game on the line.

Yep, agree. IMO, I think the drinking and drug capital of NE is gonna find things come a little drier than many expect.

Re: Goon’s Top 20 pre-season ranking

it might have something to do with the fact that carter hutton didn't play from the second period of a game on nov.7 until the second period of a game on dec.12, and lowell only went 5-5-0 in-league during that stretch, but went 9-6-2 the rest of the season. lowell lost at least three winnable games in that stretch and certainly had BU on the ropes (down 4-2 going into the third) in the nov.7 game.

Thanks for the rep of "moron" though. I didn't know you were so sensitive about anyone daring to think that UML might not be the greatest team in the country next year. Its not like I am rooting against them, in fact it would be nice to see a new name near the top. I am not surprised, however, that you couldn't come up with something more brilliant.

Jeez, if you were not a very big college hockey fan and read this thread you would think that the WCHA and CCHA ceased to exist and that HE was the only league in the country. Interesting how that works.

Because West to most fans in Hockey East is UMASS. :)

Carter Hutton: I play for the UML River Hawks.
Anonymous College Hockey Fan: Here in Lowell? I didn't know they still had a team!
Carter Hutton: Yup, we've got uniforms and everything, it's really great!

I've seen UML play and they were not that impressive. They lost to Union and we were practically laughing at the game. Guess I'm just spoiled with WCHA hockey.

Plus their goalies need to learn to focus when loudmouth *****es like me are yelling at them.

With a bunch of good senior forwards, a very solid D core that will impress this year, a very capable goaltending duo, and a solid class of incoming freshmen they will be just fine.

Yep, just fine. Not spectacular, probably not near the caliber of the Frozen Four team this year, just fine though. Nothing wrong with a 4th place finish in HE and a whimper from there.

As for the Lowell discussion, they were a very good team last year that dropped a few surprise games. Their stats still showed them to be a top team because when they won games, they were strong on both sides of the puck. Consistency shouldn't have been an issue for a team of mostly upperclassmen, but maybe another year of experience for all remaining will help them even more. They will be a top team in Hockey East, and possibly at the top. I must admit that although I do my best to follow the western teams, I don't see them play or have to listen to their fans nearly as often as I do BC fans, UVM fans, UML fans, etc., so I know less about the teams, but this top 20 does seem to be pretty good.

Re: Goon’s Top 20 pre-season ranking

well it looks like you have a lot to learn.

Not that much really, I can sum it up for you Gentry. DO NOT tell any UML fan that there team doesn't walk on water. UML will go 27-0-0 in HE, waltz through the NCAA tourney and be crowned champs as is their right. Heck may as well not even waste the gas on a trip to Tsongas just give them the W.

Any other opinion and you will get negative repped by the UML fans, as well as called names and taunted. But look at it this way, if the unthinkable happens and UML doesn't perform, it will be sooo much fun to rub it in.

That's a very fair statement. Lowell's season hit their low point during a point where they lost Hutton (as mentioned before) and a guy that was a lot more important to the team than the score sheet indicated for a stretch of 6 games. They lost all six of those games, four by one goal, the other two by two goals (each due to an empty netter). During that stretch, they only gave up 14 goals in those games (not counting the empty netters) ... but just couldn't hit the back of the net themselves.

There's no doubt one of the biggest things that most Lowell fans want to see from this team is how the players do react to expectations. With it being a veteran team, hopefully well. The seniors have gone through some tough times, got a nice bounce last year, and I'm sure they want to leave the school starting up a tradition. Should be interesting.

Another pre-season top 10, nothing really out of whack here except Minnesota being so high even with all the questions marks on D and in goal, Minnesota's can have all the scoring in the world but there D looked REALLY bad for anybody's standards last season and Kangas was far from steady in net... and again somebody else high on Mass Lowell... Expectations can be tough to deal with, specially for a program that rarely has any, it will be interesting to see how Mass Lowell reacts and plays early with the high expectations on them this year....

Like most have stated non of this really matters anyway but its always interesting to see how these websites rank teams to start the year...

CHN got the top 2 right in that poll...and then lost me after that.

I agree. Minnesota is clearly ranked way too high.
