Goon’s Top 20 pre-season ranking

Re: Goon’s Top 20 pre-season ranking

Re: Goon’s Top 20 pre-season ranking

Want to make a side bet? I think the Big Red play and I would say that they are ranked about right. I saw them play in person and I wasn't that impressed with them especially with watching WCHA teams on a week to week basis. If they played in the WCHA or Hockey East they would be a middle of the road team.

What exactly would be the deciding factor of such a "bet?" Its my opinion that Cornell will play better hockey this upcoming season than last - not that they'll win more games, score more goals, be ranked higher in PWR or KRACH, nor go farther in the tournament. What objective standard would you propose to determine if I am right or wrong?

Re: Goon’s Top 20 pre-season ranking

I just knew one of you hippie UVM turds was going to come over and respond on another thread because I made fun of UVM on your thread.

First of all, it's rolls, not roles. And I'm not really a grammar nazi or spelling nazi but at least try to pretend to be intelligent here (I know you guys don't care about spelling and all you care about is hugging trees, saying "peace man", smoking joints, and making maple syrup but still...).

Second, Muse was injured last year. You think he just had surgery for fun? Sure he played hurt, sometimes you have do what you have to do. Playing hurt and sucking it up is what it takes to have a program constantly fighting for national titles (not that you would know anything about that as a UVM fan). But it didn't work out last year.

Don't worry, by the time UVM hits the golf courses and heads back to the kiddie table, BC will be getting back into gear for another trip to the Frozen Four. And they'll probably beat some pretty good teams to get there instead of coasting past Yale and Air Force. And then you and grantfan can go cry elephant tears together over by Lake Champlain, ok?

This is a good sign actually. The BC trolls are returning which means hockey season is getting closer.

We can go on ending result of the season. I think the 11-20 positions is about right, they aren't a top 5 team I can assure you that.

Re: Goon’s Top 20 pre-season ranking

Re: Goon’s Top 20 pre-season ranking

This is the best pre-season top 20 i have seen so far... i still have a hard time understanding why Lowell is so high in everybodys ranking, they will have a hard time making the NCAA's because BC will be back to form, Vermont is coming along nicely as a program and MAine isn't going to stay down forever, HE will be very competitive this year, much like the WCHA last year, they will beat up on eachother all season long and end up with 4 teams in the NCAA and i just don't see Lowell being one of them...

Vermont is the team I would expect to drop a bit in the standings this year, and I think they are too high at #7. The Cats lose a ton of scoring punch with guys like Stalberg, Lenes, Strong and Carlson graduating or departing.

In contrast, Lowell returns their top seven scorers, all of whom registered between 21 and 30 points a year ago (talk about balance). The Hawks will also be backstopped by two outstanding senior goalies, Hamilton and Hutton, who respectively posted stingy GAA figures of 2.15 and 2.06 for the season. Don't forget that Lowell finished the year on a huge hot streak, going 10-4-2 down the stretch and advancing to the HE Championship before bowing out to BU 1-0.

Jack Parker may have said it best, "We beat Lowell four times this year, and every one of the games I thought they [UML] should have won; Lowell will probably be the number one pick in the league next year because they've got everybody back, and they're all about 28 years old."

No by all means they should be ranked, the higher the better.

I'm going to chock this up to you just not knowing a single thing about the current state of Hockey East.

- Maine probably won't "stay down forever", but they're not going to sniff home ice this season.

- BC is going to have a very interesting first half of the season, waiting for Muse to get back on the ice. Even when he does return, which Muse do we see? The stalwart who backstopped them to a National Championship as a freshman (2.20/.921) or the shaky sophomore (2.72/.908) who led BC to a 6th place finish? Also take into consideration, BC has lost 45% of their goals from last season, including the only two player who managed to put double digit pucks into the net. Add that on to the defense losing four starters and the Muse issue and it's very hard to instantly put BC at the top of the table.

- Vermont would have you think that losing Stalberg, Lenes and Strong is equivalent to dropping your third string goalie and changing the equipment manager. Never mind Stalberg was a Hobey candidate who put up crazy scoring numbers or that Strong was at times unstoppable on the draw. Will Vermont be in the hunt in Hockey East? Absolutely. They have a strong goaltender and a terrific defense. The Catamount fans seem to believe that their current roster of forwards and whoever they bring in will step right up and pick up the slack. Delusional, obviously. I still see Vermont as a home ice team this year.

As for Lowell? Whats left to say that those before me haven't said. A solid 1-2 combination in net. While I admit I'm not up to snuff with the western teams, I'm going to say Lowell has the best defense in the country, led by second team All American Maury Edwards. The River Hawks have a very balanced offense, with all four lines capable of scoring and carrying the load.

It would not surprise me to see Lowell at #1 or #2 in the coaches poll, and I would suspect they'll wind up in the top 10 of the first national poll.

Seriously, where is that powerhouse, Providence College? Surely they're Top 20 in something. ;)

This is funny because it's true. I just hope you didn't make any hippies cry with this statement.

Re: Goon’s Top 20 pre-season ranking

Re: Goon’s Top 20 pre-season ranking

Every year recently Vermont was supposed to drop down due to losing talent. Two years ago it was the early departure of Torrey Mitchell to the San Jose Sharks. Last year it was the graduation of Joe Fallon. Somehow each year rather than faltering they have stepped up their performance just a little more.

With a bunch of good senior forwards, a very solid D core that will impress this year, a very capable goaltending duo, and a solid class of incoming freshmen they will be just fine.

Re: Goon’s Top 20 pre-season ranking

Re: Goon’s Top 20 pre-season ranking

Jeez, if you were not a very big college hockey fan and read this thread you would think that the WCHA and CCHA ceased to exist and that HE was the only league in the country. Interesting how that works.

Re: Goon’s Top 20 pre-season ranking

Re: Goon’s Top 20 pre-season ranking

I am not yet completely sold on Lowell yet. Yes, I know they bring everybody back. Everybody from a 5th place team. Tons of potential no doubt and they could very well win the league. However, until they do something to prove themselves, I don't think they should be annointed to be the favorites of HEA.

I can see them having a very similiar season to Northeastern last year. A very strong start with all the veteran support. Other teams catching up to them once their younger players gain a little more experience. Top teams exposing some weaknesses when there is a big game on the line.

I actually think that 5th-place finish is misleading. They ranked 2nd in HE is goals for, 3rd in goals against, 2nd on the power play and 1st on the penalty kill. Very rarely does a team rank that high in all 4 of those categories finish as low as 5th. I don't see any reason to think they won't rank that highly in those categories again. If they do, I'd expect their record to translate more accordingly.

I don't think Lowell scared anyone last year and the other teams overlooked them and that helped Lowell outwork the opponent.

By virtue of the early hype that should change some this year and contribute to a little more effort on the part of the opponent.

Yeah, I know the coach's job is to make the team respect the opponent but we know that does not work all that well, the opponent players need a little internal motivation as well and playing a supposedly top team will help. Although I still think playing BC, BU, BC, UNH and Maine gets the player juices flowing a lot more than playing any of the the other HE teams. Although I would think that UVM is starting to climb into that group a bit. Hopefully more so this year.

If they were high in those statistical categories then they were deficient somewhere else that contributed to their finish in 5th place. Over the course of a season, the anomalies usually work themselves out. It wasn't a freak accident they finished in 5th place.

Re: Goon’s Top 20 pre-season ranking

Re: Goon’s Top 20 pre-season ranking

it might have something to do with the fact that carter hutton didn't play from the second period of a game on nov.7 until the second period of a game on dec.12, and lowell only went 5-5-0 in-league during that stretch, but went 9-6-2 the rest of the season. lowell lost at least three winnable games in that stretch and certainly had BU on the ropes (down 4-2 going into the third) in the nov.7 game.
