Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

Re: Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

Did we ever find out why Canton is going to the ECAC West? Was it their decision or the SUNYAC's decision to not admit them?

The SUNYAC is an "all applicable sports" conference (i.e. if they sanction it, you HAVE to be in it), they have made exceptions (i.e. affiliate member SUNY Morrisville), but I don't see that happening with SUNY Canton and I don't see SUNY Canton even wanting to make that step (all sports) "early" on in the move to DIII. SOMEDAY, I do see SUNY Canton a full SUNYAC member - as I do see SUNY Morrisville and SUNY Cobleskill - but I don't see that "someday" being soon.

PS
A d3 online link seems to be missing from this page

I'm surprised the SUNYAC wouldn't want a 10 team conference, even if it did mean 2 fewer NC games. Maybe the coaches would rather have those NC games?

Re: Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

I, too, doubt any WIAC schools add hockey. UWO confirmed such to Fox 11 this morning.

I'm told the WIAC will issue a news release mid-morning. No news conference planned.

Maybe SNC, LFC and LU can convince three other Midwest Conference schools to add hockey... ;)

From a competition perspective, I am sure SNC would like to be affiliated with the WIAC. A move by SNC to the MCHA is less crazy when you consider that Lake, LU and SNC are in the same conference for all other sports. I doubt that CSS wants anything to do with the MCHA given their geography.

Regarding the Midwest Conference schools, I always thought that Beloit would make a nice addition to the MCHA if they had the resources and interest. Rink access is probably too big of an issue for Grinnell, Knox and the central IL schools.

You do remember that Morrisville used to be an all sports member of SUNYAC, right? Same with SUNYIT. And they both left because they weren't competitive in any of their sports. (In fact, SUNYIT men's basketball was terrible in the SUNYAC, yet the very first year they were in NEAC, they got the NCAA AQ -- how's that for conference competitive inbalance; and we complain over a much lesser degree of that in hockey.) Morrisville applied for SUNYAC affiliated membership for both their men's hockey and field hockey teams. The SUNYAC hockey coaches were more than willing to make it work to help save the Morrisville hockey program. The other field hockey schools desperately wanted to keep Morrisville to save their AQ because it gave them seven teams. Ergo, the first ever SUNYAC affiliated member attempt was approved.

All the former 2-year schools that became 4-year schools (Cobleskill, Morrisville, Canton) wound up joining the NEAC either initially or eventually. I don't see any of them changing back again. Also, note a bunch of the small Penn State campuses belong to this conference. It's perfectly suited for these type of schools.

You are right in that if Canton joins SUNYAC in all sports, their hockey team has to play in the SUNYAC. Otherwise, if the school joins say the NEAC, their hockey team has options (most likely SUNYAC or ECAC West).

Another factor folks need to remember is we're looking at this from a hockey perspective. Yes, there are nine hockey teams in SUNYAC. However, in most sports, there are 10 teams. Not every sport is going to want to add a team to give themselves an odd 11 number just to provide hockey with an even 10.

What about SNC going D1 and playing out of the Resch Center or Brown County?

As for CSS I thought there whole athletic program was going to the MIAC? Isn't that the easy move?

Does SNC have the resources to bring their entire athletic program up to Division I because IIRC single sport playoffs are no longer permitted by the NCAA.

They can't just bring hockey up without bringing everything up.

I believe the RIT women's loophole is the NCAA passed legislation that if a comprable sport has one gender at the D1 level, then the other gender can be brought up to D1 if the school so chooses.

Re: Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

SNC will not move everything to Division 1. It doesn't have the facilities, much less the budget or the student base (2,200). And, frankly, it's doubtful they would get the dates at the arena or Resch because those facilities are run by PMI - which owns the Gamblers - and who isn't about to rent to hockey competition.

It considered men's hockey and women's soccer before the NCAA said programs such as Colorado College are grandfathered in. End of story.

My guess - with no inside knowledge and could be proved wrong at the newser - is that SNC becomes an affiliate member of the WIAC rather take the step down in competition (overall) to the MCHA. But it could take it months/years to decide that, too.

The WIAC commissioner told Fox 11 none of the other four schools are adding hockey.

My guess would be any private school wanting to join as a affiliate member would have to follow strict financial aid package guidelines in an effort to level the recruiting playing field that is probably the cause of this mess to begin with.

It now takes 10 or so years to move from Division III to a full fledged Division I member. You have to spend a whole bunch of years at Division II before you go to Division I.

BUT, since there is no Division II men's ice hockey championship, they don't have to go all the way to Division I, they can move the whole athletic program to Division II and then play in the new WCHA which, outside of Bowling Green, a D-II members league anyway, and play in the Men's Division I championship.

And if that happens, you betcha Resch lets them in.

No, it won't.
* SNC isn't moving to D2 either. So, moot point. Again, it's a matter of facilities, budget, finding a conference, etc. It's not happening.

* The Gamblers average 3,558 per game - that puts them in the top third, roughly, of the Division 1 teams in terms of attendance. (and higher than four WCHA schools) PMI owns the Gamblers. It gets all of the ticket revenue. All of the concessions, signage, parking, etc. There is no reason is would rent the Resch to a D1 team and make less money. The arena isn't in the bestest of shape. And the hockey audience here isn't big enough for both USHL and D1, regardless.

But with a 5-2 split in the NCHA, the state schools could have imposed such restrictions already, right?

Isn't it a little presumtuous to assume that SNC will have welcome mat(s) extended to them by either the WIAC or MCHA ?
