Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

Re: Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

They made the TV news :)

...

Calls by Fox-11 to the WIAC went unreturned tonight, while the NCHA told Fox-11 they would wait for a WIAC announcement before commenting. A St. Norbert spokesman told us they will have a statement released Wednesday on any developments.

University of Wisconsin schools playing in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association are expected to announce Wednesday they will leave the men’s hockey league following the 2013-14 season, the Green Bay Press-Gazette confirmed Tuesday night.

Let me spin an alternative

The NCAA loves multisport conferences, gives them votes at the table and all sorts of privileges. The single sport conferences don't get a lot of the bennies that multisport conferences do.

So suppose, the WIAC, realizing that 5/7 of the NCHA are WIAC members, decides that ice hockey is better branded under the WIAC name, rather than the NCHA. The WIAC then invites the two Saints as affiliate members for ice hockey to keep the AQ alive. Voila, the NCHA morphs into the WIAC and nothing really has changed except the Wisconsin schools will be calling all the shots and the Saints may be along for the ride (or AQ).

Sounds like a man in the know^ :)

"Voila, the NCHA morphs into the WIAC and nothing really has changed except the Wisconsin schools will be calling all the shots and the Saints may be along for the ride (or AQ)."

This would be an immense swallowing of pride for SNC (and, I suppose, CSS). SNC has worn that conference out for the better part of two decades now. Then to have the rug pulled out with little to no warning... I believe SNC will exhaust all other options to this alternative before falling in line.

That said... falling in line may be the best option. I still believe the NCHA is in the top 2 conferences in college hockey. An SNC move to the MCHA, for example, seems like a downgrade in quality, though Adrian has certainly forced Marian, Lawrence, MSOE and others to raise the bar a bit. I don't think the MIAC is an option for SNC, but would not be at all surprised to see CSS go that route.

Re: Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

Well said. I think SNC and CSS are going to come out of this just fine, one way or another. It's the Wisconsin schools that are really exposing themselves here.

Re: Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

I think it basically comes down to recruiting battles. If UWSP (just an example) and SNC are targeting the same kid. Maybe he's got an interest in becoming a teacher, so either school makes sense. A UWSP will undoubtedly use finances - cheaper tuition - as one point. But if SNC "outspends" UWSP in a financial aid package, yes, there may be hurt feelings on the UWSP side.

Now, there are lots of reasons why student-athletes choose schools. But given the recent string of titles, it's probably fair to say SNC has won more recruiting battles than it has lost - and the publics may not like it. Finances are likely one sore point, but I can't imagine that's the be all and end all.

It should all come down to net cost of attendance on the financial side and academic programs. If you look at gross financial aid, of course the private schools will spend more - they have to in order to stay even close to the public schools. In most cases, even after financial aid is applied, it's cheaper to go to a state school. As long as everybody is playing by the NCAA rules, the financial aid issue ought to favor the state schools unless the entire system is incredibly financially strapped.

(Oh and I just made the connection about Wisconsin, education, and the current governor - aha!)

Re: Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

IMO, given the "need" for western participation, the opening of a Pool Bid by the NCHA lossing theirs (assuming they can't recruit 2 associate members), would create a "defacto AQ" for the current schools that comprise the NCHA. In net, a status quo, but nevertheless it is always sad to see demise of any strong presence/history in DIII hockey. The ECAC-West is the role model of success when competing without the AQ they have proven it can be done. SNC may have to find a new pack of Big Dogs to run with, but so long as they continue to expend the resources required, they should be fine. The "WIAC" is shedding their Alpha Dog but there are certainly others waiting for a chance at the spot. It is time they look for the best lemonade recipe.

There are two problems with this

first the ECAC West - if they manage to grow to 7 would leave Pool B vacant. No "defacto AQ" for you.
second the ECAC West - if they don't manage to grow to 7 would mean that they would also be competing for the Pool B slot. It would be at best a 50-50 proposition for Pool B if this happened.

When the ECAC-West gets an AQ it merely removes the "defacto status" of one of the Pool Bids (i.e. the top ECAC-West team will ALWAYS be a contender for a pool spot, be it A, B or C - assuming all things staying the same) - but it doesn't remove what will become the "new" defacto AQ. The move doesn't start until the 2014-15 season, SUNY Canton will be a member of the ECAC-West by then - even if just a provisional member, so I do not see a resurrection of a Pool B bid.

Did we ever find out why Canton is going to the ECAC West? Was it their decision or the SUNYAC's decision to not admit them?

I've always said that Canton will do SUNYAC to give even numbers to conference. It's more realistic now that Utica wasn't given a slot in the SUNYAC.

Re: Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

What's the odds more WIAC schools add hockey?
With "money" one of the apparent issues that the WIAC schools are abandoning the NCHA, I would really doubt that any of the other WIAC schools will add varsity hockey....

Re: Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

I, too, doubt any WIAC schools add hockey. UWO confirmed such to Fox 11 this morning.

I'm told the WIAC will issue a news release mid-morning. No news conference planned.

Maybe SNC, LFC and LU can convince three other Midwest Conference schools to add hockey... ;)
