Going to Pittsburgh

Re: Going to Pittsburgh

I presume not.

That's partly on me; a year ago I expressed interest in organizing it. But even now my Pittsburgh plans remain ridiculously unsettled. Turns out that taking the lead this year just isn't an option for me. More significant than my personal situation is the fact that there has been no communication whatsoever between those who've organized the Posters' Game over the years.

Some context: The Posters' Game had a great run from 2002 through 2011. Perhaps somewhat ironically, that era began and ended in the Twin Cities. Along the way there were many great memories created. Playing in outstanding venues like Yost and Magness was a real pleasure. Even better was meeting posters from schools all over the country.

Sadly, airline baggage fees have made it much tougher to attract a "national" group of players. Reasonably enough, most players aren't willing to pay big pucks to fly their gear for one recreational game. When the participant group is mostly limited to those close enough to drive, it changes the mix considerably. For this reason, not having the game last year in Tampa was the correct call. Unfortunately the year off also caused the event to lose momentum...

Bottom Line For 2013: If someone from Pittsburgh wants to step up and organize, perhaps it's not too late for this year. But unless such a white knight comes forward very quickly, there's no need to hold time open for a Posters' Game when making your 2013 FF plans.

Looking Ahead: Will there be future Posters' Games? It would be great to start a "Next Generation." But for that to happen in 2014, we'd need someone with Philly connections to take the lead. That most certainly would not be me, although I'd be glad to play a supporting role in such an effort. Note that for most of the past games, an active Cafe thread generally emerged the preceding Fall, after the new hockey season began. If Philly is going to happen, the organizing should start at that point.

And if you are interested, the files that have e-mails of previous participants is easy to get. Both pgb and I have access to the files.

I think we need to start earlier in the year to get real interest- but we can always try.

Re: Going to Pittsburgh

Just made train reservations. Really looking forward to the trip. Going from Boston down to Philly, then across Pennsylvania to Pittsburgh. The return trip will go west to Cleveland, then up along the Great Lakes, across New York state and Massachusetts into Boston. All for $200, I'm hoping for some great scenery.

You can sleep through the Cleveland leg. Nothing to see there!

Actually I have a 3-hour layover in Cleveland before my next train arrives. The layover is at 3AM :D
I imagine there is so much to do and see in Cleveland at 3 in the morning...

Sounds like you got a good deal (I decided to fly rather than take the train in part because the flights were almost exactly the same price) but man, those train trips can be slow. Hope you enjoy it though!

I hate flying. Haven't tried since the surgery. The doctors say I'd be fine, but why risk it? I love riding the train. With the exception of the 3-hour layover in Cleveland, the trip looks great. A daylight trip west across PA and a daytime trip east through NY. No cramming into a cramped seat and getting jostled in coach. No long security checks. No sitting on a runway 30th in line for takeoff. I also don't drive anymore because of occasional blackouts but I like this better than driving anyway because I can sit back and relax rather than worry about driving. There's also no parking fees, no gas, no traffic. I'm definitely traveling via train when Maine takes on Notre Dame in South Bend next February and am looking at traveling by train to the tournament this winter in Estero.

I'll wave at ya as I drive west from Altoona. Enjoy the trip!

Re: Going to Pittsburgh

The real question is "where is the drinking?" Our crew is the craft/micro type... But anywhere w good people is fine.

I look forward to meeting a lot of you and seeing some people I haven't run into in awhile (bsaeagle)

Re: Going to Pittsburgh

We are staying outside the Strip District. Seems to be a couple places with craft beer, among them Church Brew Works. Plus the original Primantis. South side and the Monongahela Incline sound like fun.

Re: Going to Pittsburgh

Pretty sure the Pirates are playing at home that weekend, so you could catch a baseball game if you were interested.

There are a few things to see.
-The strip district is just off of downtown area and has shops and restaurants.
- Carnegie offers several museums downtown (history, science, etc)
- You could ride the duquesne incline trolley
- South side, which is just across the river from downtown has a shopping area also (think AE, Old Navy, etc)
Definitely interested in the Duquesne Incline. How good are the Duck Boat tours? The zoo?
And since I don't have a car, how good is the public transportation? According to the Pittsburgh city page, there is a bus stop right around the corner from my hotel and it is an 11-minute commute to the Consol Energy Center.
