Yes, let's give them exactly what they want by running around shiatting our pants in fear while putting them in the spotlight.

Spot light? No ... I'm think something more ruby red and about 0.25 inches in diameter.

"We don't talk about it" works great for domestic abuse  so surely it'll work here too. --> How about we call it what it is and deal with it.

Domestic abuse... terrorism... domestic abuse... terrorism. Not seeing the comparison here.

Re: Global War on Terror Version 6 - Perpetual Motion Machine

Not talking about domestic abuse does not make the situation better.
Not talking about terrorism does not make the situation better.

Re: Global War on Terror Version 6 - Perpetual Motion Machine

Not talking about domestic abuse makes the situation worse as it's something that often goes unnoticed. Not talking about terrorism means less attention to the people who were trying to gain it in the first place. So yeah in some ways it does make it better.

It does. It won't affect the short term tactical value of terrorism, since that affects people so close to the event that they know about it. But it robs terrorism of its strategic value.

It can't be done in an open society unless we all somehow agree "we're not going to report on acts of political terror." But better still is the idea that we do report on it, but we don't get scared, we just become more and more resistant to terror the more it strikes. That sets up the correct feedback loop and doesn't cost us our liberty.

It's not "don't talk about it at all." It's, "don't talk about it any more than you would any other two bit criminal."

And the most important quote from yesterday was "we are all Charlie" in whatever language. Nothing said by the gunmen was important.

Re: Global War on Terror Version 6 - Perpetual Motion Machine

It's one thing to call out those responsible and what might be (almost certainly is) motivating them, but it's something entirely different if you're living in fear of them.

We need a lot more of this, from a lot more voices:

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi struck the right note earlier this month when he called for a “religious revolution” within Islam.

“It’s inconceivable that the thinking that we hold most sacred should cause the entire umma [the Muslim community] to be a source of anxiety, danger, killing and destruction for the rest of the world,” he told an audience at Cairo’s 1,000-year-old Al Azhar university. “The entire world, I say it again, the entire world is waiting for your next move.” More Muslim leaders, especially prayer leaders, need to call out and ostracize those who kill in Islam’s name.

Re: Global War on Terror Version 6 - Perpetual Motion Machine

That whole segment was brilliant.

The Act 2 story about Utah solving homelessness by just giving people homes was brilliant, too. The whole episode was worthy of their '04 - '06 glory days.

Russian newsies are blaming the US for the attack (as in we did it)
Indian newsies say it was the Mossad

When is it Obama's fault?

There are no Saints in politics. That being said at least she's trying to talk the talk and walk the walk. More than I can say for the other *** clowns.

If you listen to some Tories, it already is.

Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), the new chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, added he’s confident in U.S. intelligence agencies, but went on to say, “My only concern is that the language that [Obama} has used does not adequately convey to the American people how severe the threat is.”

Yep, his “only concern” has to do with presidential word choice.

So, within hours of a brutal terrorist attack in Paris, quite a few leading Republican senators almost immediately saw this as an opportunity to take cheap shots at the U.S. president. It’s as if every incident, no matter how deadly, is little more than an excuse for GOP lawmakers to remind the public of their knee-jerk contempt for Obama.

Who or what isn't talking about it? And if they aren't they're the minority.

Re: Global War on Terror Version 6 - Perpetual Motion Machine

In America, we call these illegal protesters.

http://t.co/Qt2Ytrlw4K

Nah, they're white.

That's the best way to give terrorists the middle finger. And just think. they didn't even need to murder 100k people to do it.

Never thought I'd see a day where the French were braver than we.

Re: Global War on Terror Version 6 - Perpetual Motion Machine

Man, there was a guy on All In with Chris Hayes (I think they said he was the director of the Islamic center in new york*). He said that we as a society need to start to look at publishing the image of Mohammad as unacceptable as using the N word or even make it illegal like yelling fire in a theater. Or rather, he used the "fire" as a justification for not publishing the images. He said that the overall welfare of the community needs to be balanced with free speech

I don't think I have ever been thst offended. To suggest that your religion gets to decide what is acceptable to publish is just beyond me. I was completely speechless.

*I firmly believe it's a good thing that we have an Islamic center near ground zero. What a betrayal of trust.
