Re: Global War on Terror Version 6 - Perpetual Motion Machine

On the former, our allies in the region are Muslims. That's just Diplomacy 101.

On the latter, it's in your head. You've got an idée fixe that Obama is a secular elitist who runs down the poor Christian victims every chance he gets, and you grab onto every righty meme reinforcing that narrative. In the world where the sky is blue (well, gray today, ironically) Obama seems like a typical educated American Christian who also knows a thing or two about history.

Being told a fact isn't being oppressed, Bob.
You run out this same song and dance every time. You know my responses.

Re: Global War on Terror Version 6 - Perpetual Motion Machine

So glad we're going to stay in a constant war. So afraid of ISIS. So want to avenge the deaths of people who voluntarily travel to hell when they don't have to.

Hey now, they get 72 virgins. Wait until they find out they're all old Catholic nuns.

"Please, Sister, not the ruler!" :p

By song and dance read facts. yes, I know your response.
Your post explaining away Obama's constant efforts to cozy with Islam while poking at Christianity gave your impressions of things, but facts they are not.

The historical facts Obama cited are not in dispute. Facts aren't "poking." It may offend the Christian PC Police, but it's history, deal with it.

Did you ever think that maybe your impression that Obama is "constantly" doing these things has a lot to do with where you get your news and how you process it?

Yes, the Crusades did happen if that's what you are trying to say. Nobody ever said otherwise, did they? The fact that something is brought up in a certain setting in a certain way certainly can done in a poking way. To say otherwise is silly.

Obama has a long history of this. But, I guess Obama supporters spin everything to try to make him look good.

OK. Let's stick to the words that led to this little discussion, Bob.

"And lest we get on our high horse ... remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ."

I doubt you question the absolute truth of any of that. In fact, some would say those words are just another way of saying "Let he who is without sin . . . ." Yet you essentially state that those words are "outrageous." Why?

Try not to hide behind the cloak of vague generalizations that cannot be questioned and do not require defense. Step up.

I think we all know the key is the first clause. We dam well should be on our high horse in this fight. What happened 300 or 500 years is irrelevant. No reason to bring it but to reinforce the theme being push by the terrorists that this is all somehow the fault of the West. We are not the ones now beheading someone cause they don't agree with our interpretation of the Almighty. We are not the ones throwing gays off rooftops. Again, what happened in the past is irrelevant to the topic at hand, why bring it up, except to weaken our position of the moral high ground in this battle. That is the outrageous part, that he brought it up in this forum.

While I disagree with you goldy, good for you for making your specific point and standing up for it.

Everything in Pat's article is correct, except for this:

Everyone in the Middle East, it appears, wants the United States to fight their wars for them. But as they look out for their interests first, it is time we started looking out for ours first.

This is a repetition of the old canard that the US conducts foreign policy out of altruistic motives. That's nonsense. US foreign policy is motivated by self-interest, exactly like that of every other nation, and it always has been. The question is simply whose self-interest. Over the past 30 years it has been the self-interest of well-connected corporate majority shareholders who are looking to maximize their private wealth by pawning off the costs of their global economic empire on American taxpayers and servicemen. Their calculation is to expend our blood and treasure to increase their bank accounts.

You get the democracy you pay for, and they bought ours.

To be clear, there are specific reasons for it...but the action against ISIS is a bad move.

This. Apparently some people don't think things like the moral high ground exist, unless it's an issue close to their heart they are pushing of course.

It's also about the setting. Obama calls a press conference and says his usual blather. No big deal. Don't drag that kind of political posturing into the National Prayer Breakfast.

This is where Louis C.K. would mention how it is crazy that white people pretend slavery was 300 years ago when in reality it was 150 years ago slavery ended. The Civil Rights movement was 50 years ago. Before that Christianity wasn't doing much to help the black man. (and plenty of bad stuff was done in the name of Christ to said black people)

(we dont need to go in how Judeo-Chistian beliefs have been used to hold down women in America because that will really tick off the poor Oppressed White Man)

So sorry, we need to get off our high horse.

This. In spades.

Slavery has not ended. The same people that practiced it 300 or 150 years ago still practice it.

Society's expectations of women are a recent change. Men were the hunter / gatherers and women took care of the hearth and young children. When the kids got old enough the girls went with the women to learn to do womanly things and the boys learned guy things from the men.

History will evaluate this change as good or bad.
