Global War on Terror Version 6 - Perpetual Motion Machine

Re: Global War on Terror Version 6 - Perpetual Motion Machine

Not enough. If you can get rid of ISIS...there will be another. When large groups of radicals are involved, kicking the hornets nest does little good (we should have learned this in Vietnam). The goal is to find the drivers of these groups and attack participation. Russia is a different matter altogether. Putin is a dictator...but the bonds of democracy and capitalism that have been built up in the country are eroding daily. China is critical for the Russian dictator psyche...without China, its easy for Russia to question itself as they are truly alone. You always fix your biggest problem (right now Russia) and you fix it well. IMHO.
Nobody has the political will to go after anything as large as Russia. It'd be too expensive, and likely lead us into another economic recession. Obama and those who support this war want small wars that still make them look tough while creating as little economic risk as possible.

"And lest we get on our high horse ... remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ."

It's part of Obama's constant downplaying the violence emanating from Islam and his poking at Christianity. This isn't anything really new or outrageous by Obama's standards, although doing it at an event like the National Prayer Breakfast was certainly in poor taste.

OK, by whose standards is Obama's statement "new or outrageous?"

You missed the word "isn't"

Even when I say something easing angst about Obama by saying it's just another day for him, I get complaints!

Just remember, with the Crusades, the Muslims were gathering up land, and had pretty much done so since the Roman Empire began its fall. Getting those back warranted the Crusades. Plus, according to a Catholic study, more people have been killed in drone strikes under Obama's regime than the entire Spanish Inquisition.

The Russia situation is way too large to future US global interests to ignore (frankly the direct costs to the US will be huge if we don't address it now). It affects all of Europe (our largest trading partner and ally), military budgets going into the distant future, and negative global economic impacts due to loaded emotions.

That's kind of the point of what I've been saying. In the end, we don't have to do anything to take action. Just upgrade the relations with China and Russia is isolated.

In fact, this sort of ISIS action feels the same as the unjustifiable Iraq action that has very narrow/few apparent national interests, has high financial (and potential life) costs, and seems arbitrarily unilateral...so that it almost smacks of special interest influence in Washington.

Re: Global War on Terror Version 6 - Perpetual Motion Machine

Of course I omitted it. By saying it isn't outrageous by Obama's standards you imply that it is by other people's standards.[/QUOTE
When person says such and such by a given person's standards, that is saying nothing about any other person's standards, only the person being discussed. But, I know you're trying to nitpick a hole in what I said. Not gonna fall for it. Really not one of your better efforts.

Not biased at all, I'm sure. The Church would still have published the study if it had proven that more had been killed by an Inquisition they were responsible for. :D

The Church's report on the Spanish Inquisition was independent of the drone strikes, actually.

The Secret Archives are a treasure trove of what actually happened during the Inquisition.

Now, if you'll excuse me, my back has been bothering me and I need to get on the Torquemada back stretcher Mark 4 to get the kinks out.

It's part of Obama's constant downplaying the violence emanating from Islam and his poking at Christianity.

On the former, our allies in the region are Muslims. That's just Diplomacy 101.

On the latter, it's in your head. You've got an idée fixe that Obama is a secular elitist who runs down the poor Christian victims every chance he gets, and you grab onto every righty meme reinforcing that narrative. In the world where the sky is blue (well, gray today, ironically) Obama seems like a typical educated American Christian who also knows a thing or two about history.

Being told a fact isn't being oppressed, Bob.

He's Muslim by birthright, but one of the neo-Christian Jeremiah Wright folk that hate America. Why else would he soak that crud in?

So glad we're going to stay in a constant war. So afraid of ISIS. So want to avenge the deaths of people who voluntarily travel to hell when they don't have to.

The president is doing everything he can now to stick it to Hilary.

Not so sure about that. 1. She's not elected yet. 2. Congress will have a very tough vote in 3 years if it passes as its constructed.

Course, Congress is a bunch of wimps anyway who spend all day beating war drums and yet never make any hard decisions or have real debates on real facts.

Which is why they can. We could improve the foreign policy of this country immensely by (1) prohibiting the president from sending troops anywhere without an explicit declaration of war by Congress with a thoroughly description of the mission, the victory conditions, the mechanism by which the cost will be accounted for and borne, and any limitations on the war's prosecution, and (2) drafting the 1% into the infantry.

Re: Global War on Terror Version 6 - Perpetual Motion Machine

The full bore ISIS move still seems odd and not a good bargain for the US. It wouldn't surprise me if this is a backroom deal. As in...we agree to go after ISIS (for the Saudis/middle east) and the Saudis/middle east keep oil prices low putting the screws to Russia.
