The aim of war is whatever your aims were before the war. The war itself is almost never the end, just the means, and the fact that you had to use war to try to achieve them just means you failed all the other ways. Two major exceptions: (1) Genocides, where the killing is also the aim, and (2) Distractions, where the rallying around the leader that is the dependable monkey reaction to war is the aim.

Yep.

I was surprised by their casual mention of the submunition version of the Tomahawk, which I could have sworn was removed from service because it violated only about eleven thousand human rights treaties.

Matra Durandal used in conjunction with a submunition delivery system has an enormously amusing side effect. The unexploded cluster bombs really like to fall into the cracks of the structure compromised by the initial strike. So when the first responders show up to pull bodies from the rubble they themselves set off a secondary chain reaction. Depriving the injured of medical care by killing the medical staff itself really demoralizes the enemy.

This isn't caused terrorism because we're a state actor, duh.
