They acknowledge the contradiction and bask in it. They don't believe in church as a spiritual sense, but 100% believe in it as a part of society/social culture.

What percentage of people actually have a demonstrable intellectual / spiritual aspect of their lives?

Having been raised in the church, I'd wager 70% of the congregation were only there because Mommy and Daddy passed it onto them and they were passing it on to their kids.

That would be a way to put it.

The discussion just got me pondering the makeup of the Southern USA. Like 90%+ would consider themselves church-goers. But a good chunk of those people have no problem "sinning" (stuff like drinking, swearing, fighting, pre-marital sex, etc.) every weekend. And the contradiction is openly accepted as part of the social structure.

Yea, Preacher James and some of the more fanatical members of the church may look down on Tim for doing his thing on Saturday night, but overall it's accepted.

Whereas in Muslim countries, the same doesn't seem to be as out in the open and accepted. In that cultural/social structure, if Akman goes out and parties on Saturday night and then brags about his adventure in mosque on Sunday, he will face severe consequences it seems (from my outside, uninformed perspective).

I'm not sure. We fixate on the ultra-orthodox Muzzies because, oh, I dunno

but I get the idea the truly insane ortho-Jews and ortho-Christians and ortho-Hindus will murder you too if you stray from The Path of Ahem Love.

The thing that seems to make the Chrypocrites like the evangelists unique is they go full on fulmination about fire and brimstone and then immediately expose themselves to damnation through their behavior. That is, if nothing else, incredibly stupid behavior. Granted, conservatives are both lazy and never take responsibility, but you would think if these hayseeds really believe in the literal existence of the Lake of Fire they would be a bit more careful.

But as a Catholic I don't get the sola fide thing. Apparently what you actually do doesn't count because you are predestined anyway. This has never made any sense to me.

I think a key difference is that in many of the places where those other religions are the dominant one, there is a blending of religion and state. Biff McBeerface might think twice about his preferred Saturday night bender if his preacher could run to the Sheriff and have him publicly flogged for it. Tends to suppress the overt acts of hypocrisy just a bit.

I could be wrong (also a recovering Catholic), but I don't think sola fide is interpreted to mean, "Do whatever feels good. As long as you believe in salvation through Jeebus, welcome to Heaven."

Sola fide means that if you truly believe, that includes striving to live an Xtian lifestyle, thus the good deeds/works should happily and selflessly follow as part of being a true believer. You cannot simply buy your way into Heaven by racking up a bunch of insincere good works before and/or after you go out and commit premeditated murder.

Drew and the incels gonna be big mad. Rolling Stone founder removed from rock and roll hall of fame after admitting the magazine excluded black and women artists because they weren’t “articulate” enough for him

The implication of sola fide is behavior is immaterial to salvation. It isn't advice to orgy out, but it means no human can ever deserve grace, no matter what we do, because we are absolutely depraved.

I must admit, while Mediterranean Catholics believe a lot of sick and stupid stuff, we never quite got to that level of sick and stupid. Needed Northern Europeans butthurt about their sh-tty weather to come up with that craziness.

There was an anti-LGBTQ protest in Canada yesterday. The bigots were vastly outnumbered and in some cases, encircled by counter protestors so they couldn't leave.

Ya the Muslims and right wingers have really formed the marriage from hell

They are no more "Muslims" than the right wingers are Christians.

I really wish the believers would take their cults back from the psychotics. We need what sane and intelligent Christians, Muslims, and Jews (and apparently, Hindus) there are to stand up and reclaim their mythic bullsh-t as a power of love not hateful cowardice.

Reclaim? It’s always been about hate and maintaining power.

OK then, not reclaim, transform.

It's an incredibly powerful force, particularly with the smoothbrains.

We have been fools to concede it to the Right due to our preference for reason. At least half of the human population cannot be swayed by, nor wish to be informed of, reason. The choices are:
  • Insist upon reason and lose them (the current choice, which is electorally unsustainable)
  • Use our wits to commandeer religion and turn it, albeit mendaciously, into a force for good -- a Noble Lie.
  • Disenfranchise the smoothbrains
All we really need to do is nullify the smoothbrains by moving half of them from the Hateful Vengeful God myth to the Loving Tolerant God myth. Then their votes cancel and we have effectively removed them from the system.

I've met people from Vote Common Good, a group of progressive Christians and former Evangelicals working to fight Christian Nationalism.

I've met notables like Frank Schaeffer and Shane Claiborne, and locally, the United Church of Christ and progressive wings of the RCA and CRC work with them as well.
