The over-the-top bigotry against trans people is what created the environment in which this type of reaction is seen as likely just another attack on them.

To an extent, sure. But speaking as someone who is not left of Bernie and therefore the equivalent of a Republican to a certain ilk on this board and elsewhere, that's not 100% of the story. Some people just want to be offended at every little thing, and it's amplified by social media where people of all beliefs and ideologies can self-select into their own safe spaces and any challenge from any angle will be treated by the group as offensive and hostile.

So yes, the MAGA crew represents an existential threat to this country, and especially to minorities of all forms, and we can all agree on that on this board. But biting the heads off people because they only agree with you on 95% of issues instead of 100 percent is not a winning strategy long term.

Perhaps, but I'd rather err on the side of the persecuted. The over-the-top bigotry against trans people is what created the environment in which this type of reaction is seen as likely just another attack on them. You are conveniently erasing all they have been through and saying "but why can't we just have a calm discussion?" Yeah, no. You don't get to do that. Their pain's real and relevant. Your cis daughter's minor inconvenience just aint makin' it.

Step 1 for calm discussion: stop the right wing f-ckwits' demonizing these people and questioning their right to exist. Then we'll talk about the all important question of whether precious little Erika may be facing unfair competition on her tennis team.

This is MAGA, but from the Left.

"Stop demonizing me and leave me the hell alone" is not "MAGA from the Left," regardless of how much you want it to be.

What you're deliberately doing is confusing frustration with irrationality and accountability with persecution. It's basically "not all men," but with cis people. And while it may not be all men, white people cis people, cishets, whatever, it's enough. It's too many.

"Why can't we have a calm conversation over trans athletes in sports?"

I can think of a few reasons.

A. The conversation started with panic and hysteria.
B. The thoughts, feelings, and experiences of trans athletes have either been minimized or disregarded entirely.
C. Successful trans athletes, such as Lia, were quickly demonized.
D. Lack of solutions other than "keep em out" or "can't they form their own league?"
E. There was no real effort to cut the panic and hysteria off early.
F.. The rhetoric has largely been "Keep Trans Katie off the track team because she might hurt Cis Susie."
G. Silence while state governments have authorized genital inspections of teenagers.

And while some of you may not have directly thrown gas on the fire, you really didn't do anything to cut it off or replace it with anything productive.

Now that so many of you are being consumed in the fire of your making, rightfully so might I add, you want to sit there and play victim. I'm not having it. Let it burn.

A. The conversation started with panic and hysteria.

Um, no it didn't. Other than Fishy, a vast majority of us here on USCHO have respectfully brought up the issue. You just choose to forget that when it comes up. Yes, it's a tough question, but it needs to be asked.

B. The thoughts, feelings, and experiences of trans athletes have either been minimized or disregarded entirely.

How so? Again, here at USCHO comments from Lia and others have been posted. No one here other than the usual suspects instantly disregarded them. Again, you're putting us all in the same bin as MAGAs when this couldn't be further from the truth. As UNO said, however, some here seem to think anyone to the Left of Bernie is a MAGA.

C. Successful trans athletes, such as Lia, were quickly demonized.

Again, other than FISHY, who did that here? I don't care what happened outside USCHO on this point. You hold the actions of Fox News and the like against the people here, despite all of us obviously constantly calling them out on their BS. Who here has said derogatory things about Lia? Who here made inappropriate comments? Who brought up anything other than evidence relevant to the case at hand? Elaborate on the demonization that you are claiming, cause I don't believe there has been much, if any on USCHO.

D. Lack of solutions other than "keep em out" or "can't they form their own league?"

I've posted several possible solutions (for "Elite" athletes (NCAA and up), High School, and recreational play). Each level has it's own nuance and what is feasible/capable. Specifically I have asked several times for YOU to give a counter to my reasoning around HS athletes. Specifically the fact that many of these athletes are very much their biological gender (meaning no hormone therapy) and most have recently come to terms with who they are and accepted that. As much as you have a problem acknowledging it, at this level, there is the legitimate question as to one's physical makeup and how that comes into play with the game.

You've never responded to these requests really. You've mentioned Lia's case a few times. But the stringent control in her case (that she passed) can't be applied at the amateur and/or HS level. How do you apply the transition process here? The timeframe of HS sports doesn't allow the 2-4 year process that is used in "elite" competition. Also, who here has legitimately questioned the "elite" process? No one who is legitimately asking has questioned the Lia's of the world. We are asking about lower levels.

E. There was no real effort to cut the panic and hysteria off early.

What do you want from us here on USCHO? I feel that this has been a fairly open and supportive group of regular posters as a whole. If we are really as horrible as you make us out to be, why do you still come here? You're making this seem like the Caf? is a Truth Social comments section. You know damn well it's not. Yes, there are some knuckleheads who have come and gone. But they have been pushed out by many posters who have called them out on their BS. So again, what do you want from the Message Board here? What can we do that we aren't already doing to help the cause?

F.. The rhetoric has largely been "Keep Trans Katie off the track team because she might hurt Cis Susie."

And your counter to this has been "F_ck YOUR feelings Susie!". Again, very MAGA in the style. Again, there are legitimate questions that apply at the Local/Amatuer level. You want to ignore the legitimate biological differences that are present in these circumstances. Honestly, no one cares if a trans athlete finishes 7th in a field of 18 at a HS duel meet where the winning time was easily off of state qualifying pace. But that question absolutely comes into play when the same athlete comes in 1st at a large invitational where the top 10 is all UNDER the standard time to qualify for the state meet.

"The Sports team didn't sports hard enough. They need to sports harder next time" is a basic summary of commentary you've made several times over years on various topics. This kind of hints that you're someone who isn't super deep into sports. Not exactly a position someone who wants to dismiss the feelings of people deeply invested into sports should really be in. This shows that you really don't completely understand the emotional investment people place on sports. There is a lot of nuance here that you don't seem to grasp. Not all of it is the Toxic Masculinity spouted by MAGAs. Especially in the crowd here.

JJ has posted his thoughts as a father for a daughter who plays. UNO as a husband whose wife competes. Why do you instantly dismiss their feelings? Are they not legitimate? It's not the disagreement that is the problem here. It's the instant dismissal.

G. Silence while state governments have authorized genital inspections of teenagers.

Who here on USCHO said that this was acceptable? Again, what do you want us to do? Do you want us to all fly down to Austin, OKC, Tallahassee, or whatever backwater Red State has authorized this behavior and protest in front of their capital? IL hasn't passed any such legislation, but as an active, year round HS official, you can be damn sure I'll be supportive on that front if it comes up before me.

I truly don't understand what you want from us here. Again, USCHO seems to have been a very supportive and open community. If you truly believe this, why do you come back? You make us seem like a wretched, toxic clan. I truly don't believe that. If we come off that way, I truly believe that we are doing it intentionally and we truly don't want to be received this way. Help us understand why you want to cast us in this nature.

I’ve seen rationale dialogue on subject change peoples minds.

I learned more because I wasn’t sure how I felt early on. I was a female who had to play on boys teams growing up and there’s a huge freaking difference at some ages between physical abilities with boys and girls. I had to quit hockey when it became dangerous.

there’s an irony to men yelling that women/girls need to shut up and suck it up, but I guess that kind of tracks with all of history.

the fact that I know how it feels to get shit on/be seen as less than because I’m a woman is why I don’t ever want any trans person to feel that. They should be allowed to play sports. Professional sports have guidelines so there’s nothing to argue there. But for amateurs, people still struggle and I’m happy to see more people ultimately deciding that trans kids are kids and shouldn’t be crapped on.

I'd actually like to hear 16 year old Cis Susie's opinion on whether Trans Katie should be allowed to join her. Not her parents speaking for her. Not the local Baptist minister. Not some hotshot politician posing with Cis Susie to further his agenda. Not some man drinking Malort at the bar.

I'd also like cis people to acknowledge that when you put all of the recent anti-LGBTQ shit together, there's gonna be an uprising that makes Stonewall look weak by comparison.

As a cis man with a daughter who I hope plays some sort of sport someday, I still just do not get the big deal. Yeah, if my 5'4" daughter has to play basketball against a 6'0" trans girl some day, that sucks, but that's also life. What if my daughter WAS 6'0" but it just so happened that the only 6'6" cis girl in the league's history happened to be the same age? Same suckitude. You have to play the competition that life deals you, and if life dealt your opponents superior athletic skills or attributes, then so be it. Sorry.

Should all the male athletes who lost to Michael Phelps over the years be stewing in their cornflakes about how UNFAIR it was that they happened to compete at the same time in history as the GOAT? Nope. They just got beaten by a superior, qualified athlete who followed all the rules. In the immortal words of Fezzik, "It's not my fault being the biggest and the strongest."

Let the trans kids play.

So why have women's sports at all in that case? Just make everything an open division, and may the best man win (literally).

Do I think people are transitioning just to win at sports? Fark no. Do I nevertheless think a trans woman has an inherent biological advantage in athletic endeavors over cis-women of similar age and ability? Yes. Is that advantage unfair? That's the $50,000 question, but I ultimately think yes. Does that suck for trans women? Yep, absolutely. But the alternative is to basically make it suck for all cis-women, and when my wife tells me she'd be bitter if she lost out on her age group award at the local half marathon to a transgender woman, I get it. She's finished top 3 among women a few times in some tiny races with 250 or so entrants, but that still put her outside the top 10 overall because men are simply faster.

If Bruce Jenner came out as Caitlin the day before the Olympics and competed in the heptathlon instead of the decathlon, she doesn't just set a world record but embarrasses the rest of the field. In a contact sport like hockey or basketball, a transitioning athlete like that would put other players at risk physically absent some regulations. I can't get past that, sorry.

Does that mean I'm going out to vote for a republican because of it? No chance in hell. Do i think it's an overblown wedge issue? Absolutely. But in this limited circumstance, I get it.

You raise a lot of tough questions that I grappled with myself, and I can’t say I fully understand the implications of my position, but I’m pretty sure that it is morally right. The key is this portion of your post, because these levels of suck are not equivalent. “You cannot participate” is completely different from, “There’s a slight chance that a trans athlete might be present at your competition and therefore you have a lower probability of winning.” This is a case of, “Heads: Mary gets liver cancer; Tails: 100 women get a cold. Ready for me to flip the coin?” No, sorry, as much as colds suck, that’s not an either-or proposition to consider. So sorry, ladies, with my magic wand I hereby give you all colds to prevent Mary from getting cancer.

”You cannot participate because you’re not a woman” is dehumanizing. “You might not win” is normal, everyday life.

ETA: put another way, everyone is entitled to participate in voting, but nobody is entitled to have their candidate win. I know you’re a good dude, but this is analogous to what southern Dems were worried about in the 1870’s, “But….if you let black people participate in the vote, my preferred candidates have a lower chance of winning!” Yep, they sure do - and the problem is…..what, exactly?

”You cannot participate” is dehumanizing. “You might not win” is normal, everyday life.

Is it dehumanizing that LeBron James cannot participate in the WNBA? Or that a 10 y/o can't play in the under 8 soccer team? Or that I couldn't play in the over 40 beer league until recently?

Women's sports have always been a restricted/flighted division just as age groups have been. Both for safety and competitive reasons. We mainly talk about individual non- contact sports like swimming and track, but what about hockey? boxing? Rugby? Is it dehumanizing when there are safety issues in play as well?

As you say, life isn't fair. And athletics is one of the rare areas where biological sex matters.

You acknowledged (correctly, so far as I can tell) that nobody is transitioning for competitive reasons, but now you use a LeBron hypothetical to argue for actual exclusion of sincerely transitioned athletes? I don’t see how that adds up.

When it comes to safety, that should be up to the individual athletes to decide - you have to sign a waiver for every sports league, from the NFL down to preschool hopscotch. If you look across the mat and feel that you do not have the physical skills to safely compete against a particular opponent in a particular sport, then you should forfeit that match and live to fight another day.

So why not take the pressure off of Athletic Departments everywhere and just offer Men's sports? That takes a ton of financial pressure off of every high school in the country...

I'm going to have to assume the financial aspect of all of this isn't your main concern. Personally, I'd say anything provided by MissT trumps financial concerns.
