Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

Some states are starting to make left lane camping a ticketable offense.

The autobahn implements a slightly more forceful tactic: Mr. Racing Hero in a GT3 flying up behind you at 160.

I was driving to Detroit on a stretch of I-94 with 3 lanes. Cop is going ~62 mph in the center lane. Traffic is actually going slower in the right lane. Left lane has some fool that is seemingly afraid to pass the cop, so I'm stuck behind this crap for awhile. After several minutes of this person going 60 mph in the left lane, not passing anyone, the cop pulled them over. I happily zipped by at the speed limit, and then started speeding once they were out of view.

Just curious how many of these cars are Subarus with Vermont license plates...

Vermonters are surprisingly decent with lane discipline, at least the ones I've found. They do like to Sunday drive at their 50 MPH, mind you...

Subaru owners have the highest rate of speeding tickets of all production car owners in the nation. I think about 80% of those tickets are given to people driving a WRX or the BRZ (Subaru's only non-AWD vehicle).

You're not wrong.

(I really want an STI...)

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

I've found in LA that you're much better off being in the 2nd lane from the left, because so many people pack* into the left lane thinking that it should be the fastest (plus there are mergers in and out of the carpool lanes). Nobody here cares about passing on the right, so you can usually zip right by the slower traffic in the left-most lane.

*nerd alert: I refer to this phenomenon in my mind as "LAPack"

Welcome to MN driving. They are everywhere.

Yes. I love my state for a myriad of reasons, but the average driver is a selfish, oblivious **********.

Funny thing is here in the Phils it's every man for himself on the road (just like in Bangkok. Manama, Marrakech...) but it's an organized chaos. Back home is just chaos and any driver that dares to be assertive (not aggressive mind you) risks road rage.

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

My boss just sent an email informing us that he will be out of the office, and letting us know the names of his "backup's".

Sometimes understanding correct apostrophe usage feels like a curse. :p

One of my kid's teachers sent an email with a "their" where he needed a "there." I know he teaches science and not English, but still.

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

On a related topic, I never ever mess with a person driving in a hurry. You never know what a person's story might be.

I once received a phone call saying my wife had just been taken to the emergency room. I drove rather quickly to get there as soon as I could. Who knows if someone else might be in a similar situation? It's not my job to make those decisions. Those people who think they are somehow engaged in social justice by blocking other drivers might be terribly wrong....maybe the other person isn't selfish and rude, maybe they really do have a real emergency. Would I be the one who caused a person to die because they couldn't be transported to the hospital in time just because I insisted on blocking traffic?

Some of us are speeding because we might just need to go Poop! Either way, those Left Lane Blockers deserve The Special Hell!!

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

having to find a new doctor grinds my gears. I really, really liked my doctor, but she left her practice. not sure if she moved somewhere else, or just quit. I had to look for one a few years ago when my insurance stopped covering mine, and I hated the one I picked. clammy hands. weak handshake. no thank you.

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

Sports talk radio.

Michigan State is in the Final Four and the half hour I tried to listen between the two GR area stations, one talked about the Lions and the draft for 25 minutes with five minutes of commercials, the other had ten minutes of commercials and had a Michigan football beat writer along with a doctor from one of the health corps that sponsor the show to talk about injuries with the Tigers. There were exactly three mentions of MSU, all by the second station to advertise the watch parties the sponsors were having.

Who are the people listening that are entertained by NFL talk on Final Four/Opening Day/Masters week?

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

And you thought it was a good idea to share that.
Hammer, do you honestly want to look me in the eye and tell me that you have never ever hurried along your way either home or to some other location because you was feeling the pressure to answer nature's call??

There is never a need to share that fact.
