Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

And as far as I'm concerned, vegans can post ALL the turkey slaughter YouTube videos to social media, every hour on the hour every day until Thanksgiving... it won't change a thing. 98% of America is going to sit down and enjoy a freshly cooked animal of some kind on Thursday afternoon. With gravy.
I'm having the relatives over for dinner. :)

In response I plan on consuming not one, but two vegans. They do count as animals, right?

Pre-emptive grinder- all the people who will show up in the office with a virus neeeeeding antibiotics, something to manage their pain with narcotics but haven't tried anything else, needing to get better nooooooooow!1!11111!!!!!! because the holiday is upon us. I hate this week. Every one is out of sorts and rather than figure that out they want a quick fix for things that don't we have one for. When this isn't forthcoming then we are withholding treatment that they are entitled to because dammmmmmmit they have paid their co-pay (usually after being triaged, told what they need to do and insisting they need to be seen!!1!!11!!!!! because that is not good enough)

I suppose you can't tell people that anti-"biotics" are totally useless against a virus, eh? though it might be fun in theory to imagine their blank stares in response. ;)

then you could say "would you like an anti-viral for that bacterial infection?"

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

went to pick up family at the airport on Friday. Huge line of cars by baggage claim. Finally get up to the doors, and there are people just sitting in their cars - not actively loading/unloading. Just taking up space and waiting because they didn't want to drive around again. Or because they're terrorists. Finally, airport officials came out to move people along, but, really? How many times have we been through this? You can't just park your car and wait at the airport!!!! selfish ******** who think the rules don't apply to them grind my gears.

It costs $5 for short-term parking. The outrage!

or, you could just drive around again or go to the cell-phone waiting area instead of parking at the terminal for 20 minutes and clogging up traffic because your wife stopped for Starbucks before getting her luggage and still isn't outside yet.

If you are not actively loading or unloading, you cannot park at the terminal! This is not complicated.

unrelated gear grinder: hey, you know what's not a holiday? "Black Friday". If you have off work that day, your employer is giving you an extra benefit that isn't required. Be thankful. Same with December 24. Some people ***** and moan about how their employer doesn't do anything for them for the holidays because they don't get a bonus or a ham or whatever, but they get those days off.

edit: and yes, I know, many people have to work the actual holidays as well.

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

My company gives the day after thanksgiving off but not Christmas Eve.

We do get our birthday as a floating vacation day to use anytime in our birth month.

There is also a floating day that my company randomly uses to make a long weekend of an existing holiday. For 2014, it is for Boxing Day. 2013 was the Friday before Labor Day (coupled with my floating birthday I had a five day weekend). 2015 it's being used for the day after New Year.

Sam's Club offers New Year's Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas off, with abbreviated hours on Christmas and New Year's eve.

Re: Gear Grinding Part 5: The Story of the Broken Tooth

Having been a 32 year Federale, here's what we got.
13 Holidays. The usual + Veterans Day and Inauguration Day (DC metro area only)
The day before / after Christmas if it falls on a Monday or Friday and Christmas falls on a Tuesday or Thursday. This needs an Executive Order .
Never Black Friday, but most people took leave. I worked and it was very quiet and I got a lot of paperwork done. New Years Eve, never.

The Federal government has a use or lose policy for vacation time. For most workers, you carry over your unused vacation time from one year to the next, subject to a 240 hr ceiling. If you're going to exceed your 240 hours, you must "use or lose". Hence the last 2 weeks of the year are not well populated in the Federal offices. Unused sick leave (13 days / yr) is no longer counted 100% towards retirement for employees hired since the early 80's. Now it's 50%, it used to be 0, so employees close to retirement would get "ill" the last month or so of their career to burn their sick leave down. My sick leave counted 100% - picked up an extra year of benefits for staying healthy and not getting pregnant.

My Unions contract includes holidays for Thanksgiving, Day After Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years Eve, and New Years.

The catch is, as a full-time employee on the air side, I have to go to work unless it's my normal scheduled day off. So Thanksgiving? Gotta go in. Christmas? Gotta go in. New Years? Gotta go in. Yeah I get holiday pay and it's a nice paycheck but, to some extent I'd rather be home with my family.

*cough* Are you kidding? Part of the requirement is the prescription so they can geta full benefit from their insurance they are paying for!!1!!11!! Even if the copay is higher than the OTC med, probiotic or not.

Sugar pills for everyone! :D
*cough*

2nd patient in yesterday. Not even really sick but she might be getting sick because she coughed and 2 yrs ago she had pneumonia. Called, got triaged and then got nasty insisting she be seen. My comment was something like- so, exactly what do you think I am going to do for you? She had no idea but she wanted to be seen before the long weekend. I say we are open Friday. Well, she has things to do that day. She left without a prescription and the same advice she got on the phone. WWWWW***F did you just pay 25$ to waste my time for. Oh, and she refused the Flu shot because she never gets sick  Sometimes I think I might bite the tip of my tongue right off.
