This one is a massive gear grinder for me right now…
I got accepted as an official for the 2023 Arctic Winter Games. For background, it’s an international sports festival for the circumpolar regions like Alaska, Yukon, Nunavut, Greenland etc. It’s kind of a deal.
Anyways, I’ve been filling out the needed paperwork, done through a well made online system I must say. The one holdup for me has been completing the background check. The event is being held in Northern Alberta so the requirement and the paperwork sent out is to complete a “Vulnerable Sector Check” with Royal Canadian Mounted Police, they even emailed a nice letter I can take to my local RCMP attachment to complete this step.
Obviously, this is a bit difficult for someone in Anchorage, Alaska to complete (for reference, the Whitehorse RCMP detachment is about a 14 hour drive).
So I have tried contacting the Coordinators for Technical Officials trying to find a suitable alternative (State Troopers background check, FBI background check, SafeSport background check and training etc.) and how to deliver them results. The only response I have gotten from the Coordinators for Technical Officials, the people whose literal job it is to solve problems like this, was the email addresses of two officials from Alaska who have completed this step and was told to ask them how they completed it.
I’m sorry, it’s my fault for thinking that a Coordinator for an international sporting festival, one in which Alaska was a founding member of and typically has the largest delegation, would be able to come up with an acceptable solution to this.
