Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

I spoke with this client today - I've dealt with her before when I was with a different firm so I was forewarned - but she said 4 times "long story short" and it never got short. What should have been a 2 minute phone call took 10 and felt like 30. I can barely get the proverbial word in edgewise when talking to her.

Nice lady, but man she will talk and talk and talk...

I guess she studied brevity under Scheherazade....

"Why use a sentence, when a paragraph will do?"

Artificial turf fields. I'm a goalkeeper and I hate diving around on it.

I will admit the new stuff is better than the original Astroturf that I played on at Griggs in Duluth back when I was a teenager. Give me the Didier Drogba or Thierry Henry clause, only grass fields. :D

Are you talking about the stuff with the black pellets? It is better than Astroturf, but I agree: annoying.

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

I'm a goalkeeper and that stuff is a godsend. I have no idea what you're talking about. Seriously.

The Astroturf, or looking into it it's called Nexturf? Nexturf is better, but still annoying. You don't get the "roadrash" effect, but you get black pellets everywhere.

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

Field Turf is the new stuff.

You can get dirt or black pellets. I'll take the pellets. Plus field turf doesn't wear out in the penalty area like grass does. The mud and hard dirt is awful.

Ok. I'll take the lesser of two evils (pellets). Still not pleasant.

I don't even know if it's an evil. The stuff is great. Bouncy and soft.

The only shytty part is if they don't groom it or lay down enough of it.

It gets everywhere. Like, places that are not suitable for public conversation. ;)

And dirt doesn't? When I play on grass I get dirt everywhere. Sandy ballsack is far worse than a few pellets that get stuck in your hair or in your compression shorts.

Seriously. I love field turf as long as it's installed right.

Also, maybe not so good for you:

I'm far from a conspiracy theorist, anti-vaxxer nutjob, but as a goaltender, I can attest to the fact that this stuff gets EVERYWHERE. If it has nasty chemicals in it, there's no doubt that they are absorbed into players' bodies.

I don't know if there's a link, but if there is, we're talking about people who work and play on the stuff 300 days of the year maybe.

I get exposed to it once a week for a couple months a year.

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

Guess I'm in the minority.

I've picked up so many more minor injuries playing on turf. Sprains and bruises on wrists, elbows, shoulders, etc. that I never got on grass.

I have had some success cutting down on the rugburn by switching to padded pants, but those little black things still get in and irritate.

There's anecdotal evidence that the black pellets aren't exactly healthy for you, seeing as the black pellets are essentially chopped up tires and the like. Fieldturf isn't exactly gung ho about performing comprehensive studies, either...

I'll take grass stains and the occasional scraped leg over potential cancer, myself.

Agree, but if you're a community or a school that has a high use field, grass can get chewed up and turned into Astro Dirt rather quickly.

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

I guess I haven't played many summer sports, it was mostly fall/winter, so turf is softer than dirt in those cases. In summer? Give me natural ground, and it's not close.

If a closet had 20 linear feet of hanger space, the husband will have
a) < 5 feet
b) > 5 feet < 8 feet
c) > 8 feet

of hanger space.
