Growing up with a lot of Polish people who were gamely still fighting off the Polish Joke stigma on one side and the Russians on the other, I was extremely disappointed to realize that, far from heroic, they create a totally shitty culture whenever given half the chance to breath. From their Draconian ortho-Catholic misogyny and homophobia to their insane levels of xenophobia, anti-Semitism, and racism, the only thing stopping them from being the Alabama of Europe is Serbia.

My people, the Slovaks, are sadly not much better. We're in a tight race with the Romanians and Hungarians to complete the Podium of Hate.

Like everywhere else, the more rural the more ape-like.

I would be curious to know that as well. Per immigration records, my last ones arrived from Ujvencsellő, Hungary in 1903. They lived all the way up in Bessemer for a time (where great grandma was born), so I can only assume that great-great grandpa must've worked in the mines.

FWIW, I've looked up Ujvencsellő on Google Maps and it's easy to see why even Bessemer would've been an improvement.
