Future of the ccha????

Re: Future of the ccha????

I just wonder what he is going to do with his Sioux jersey and how happy he will be when the nickname is gone ;)

Its already in a garbage bag with the gophers jersey and sitting in the corner of my garage with a bunch of other junk.

Re: Future of the ccha????

If one or both Notre Dame or Western Michigan does not to join the new conference, you can count St. Cloud State out. School president Earl H. Potter III said Friday that his school would not consider joining the new league, even if asked.

Wow. That's a school with principles and I'm serious. SCSU should have been included to begin with...and it would have been tempting to join if offered. Everyone forgets the tough decisions a decade later...but would continue to be reaping the results.

Don't believe everything you read........

UAH continues to get screwed by CCHA:
http://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2011/07/19_ccha,_atlantic_schools_to.php
Talks will hinge on a variety of issues, some of which will be difficult to settle immediately. Among them include the future of the CCHA's television contract, and the location of the CCHA's tournament.

It's also believed that the Atlantic schools are not prepared to play in the league if Alaska is still involved, which could be another sticking point. That sentiment also does not bode well for Alabama-Huntsville, Division I's lone independent, which has been searching unsuccessfully for a new home since the dissolution of the CHA.

The Atlantic schools not liking having Alaska in the picture is one thing, and I know that Huntsville isn't exactly a bus ride, even for the Pennsylvania/New York AHA teams that the CCHA would be courting... but is Wodon really saying that the travel to Huntsville is in the same league as the flight out to Alaska?

Atlantic Hockey commissioner Bob DeGregorio said:
"It's great we added a 59th program, but as I've been saying all along, what is the fallout?" DeGregorio said. "If we end up losing two to three programs, or destroying some good leagues, then we haven't done what's good for college hockey. It's funny, but when Robert Morris and Niagara were looking for a place to go, everyone called me and said, 'Bob, you gotta do a good thing for hockey.' Where is that now? Everyone is doing what's best for them and to hell with everyone else."
Heh.

It's a flight either way, no? And I would think once you are committed to flying the team for an away game, the costs are already significantly higher than busing. I think the comment is based on the idea that the Atlantic Hockey teams would want to simply bus everywhere.

Of course, I would think the potential for extra games and the possibility of having UA covering travel expenses would make having Alaska in the league not a big deal for Robert Morris and Niagra, et al. But if they think that is a problem, then they probably wouldn't be too keen on having UAH involved either.

It's only a 14 hour bus ride...

I wonder how those costs would work out. I know that a flight is a flight, but it's a hell of a lot shorter to fly to Alabama than it is to essentially fly over 3/4 of Canada.

Re: Future of the ccha????

I think that as long as North Dakato has a say, SCSU probably won't get in invitation. Then-president Sago of SCSU is who instigated that lawsuit to have teams like the Fighting Sioux change their nicknames.

St Cloud's president already has stated that they have no interest in the NCHC. They don't match up budget wise, especially in the travel department, with those other schools. Much more cost effective to bus to Mankato, Bemidji and Tech than to fly to Denver, CC etc. And remember, in the current WCHA, teams made one Colorado flight. They would have to make trips to both Denver and CC in the new league, and if that league is able to draw some other big money, but distant programs, the costs become even greater.

Re: Future of the ccha????

Niagara and Robert Morris wouldn't have a problem coming to Huntsville. They've done so for years as CHA members. And Mercyhurst is playing in Huntsville this December. Shoots some holes in Wodon's theories.

Re: Future of the ccha????

If they need an 8th team, I would say Huntsville is possible, given the bus ride there isn't much different than LSSU, Bowling Green or Ferris's ride to Omaha. And if a playoff trip had to be made to Alabama, it would certainly have fewer negatives than going to Fairbanks on short notice.

Like I've mentioned in other posts, RMU made the trip to Huntsville last year, Mercyhurst making it this year. And Niagara made the trip regularly as part of the CHA. So there is precedent that shows they've done so in the past, now if they'd want to continue in the future is the question. But travel to Huntsville hardly in the Alaska travel category.

Re: Future of the ccha????

Huntsville was a nice mid-winter break from the weather up North ... the players always enjoyed the trip, usually gave them a chance to get outside for a couple of days. It was especially good with direct flights into Huntsville rather than having to go into Nashville. I do not think Niagara would have an issue but that is just my WAG.

Alaska would be more of an issue.

Except that the Alaska travel is mostly paid for by UA (Fairbanks) and gets you two games that don't count against your total.

Not really. The question is, do they want to go there? Do they want the expense of a 2 day trip?
