Fun With Numbers 2019: PWR, RPI, KRACH, GRaNT, WCHODR, & other assortments of letters

So BC is pretty much definitely out of the tournament, except that there are a ton of different scenarios where it will still be in. Thanks for that clarification.

Grant can do panic out to four decimal places.

Re: Fun With Numbers 2019: PWR, RPI, KRACH, GRaNT, WCHODR, & other assortments of let

Sorry ARM, I'll be sure to keep all discussion of the nuances of the Pairwise out of the Pairwise thread from now on. That's my fault.
No problem with nuances. The first couple sentences, though, make it sound like you didn't read what you wrote below.

Anyway, we are used to this. BC is always going to be alive, because no matter what happens over the next three weeks, the league tourney will remain winnable. Even with no improvement, they're very capable of beating the teams that they'll face. They just didn't have home ice locked up by Thanksgiving like we all expected.

This Women's College Hockey Forum is like my XM radio. There is a thread for every taste, and if you don't like the smooth jazz found on the Fun With Numbers thread, you can go over to the Minnesota thread for News and Weather, or visit the Heavy Metal Hair bands found in the OSU thread. I think I'll bop over to the Badger thread for some good polka.

Re: Fun With Numbers 2019: PWR, RPI, KRACH, GRaNT, WCHODR, & other assortments of let

Well, BC has a much bigger problem.

...... barring something crazy with Princeton/Clarkson/Cornell..

The next 3 weekends Clarkson has Cornell/Colgate home, visiting Dartmouth/Harvard and wraps up with Princeton/Quinnipiac home.

None of these games are gimmys (despite Dart/Harv/Quinn overall records). The first time around they lost to Cornell 3-1 ENG/Colgate 4-1 ENG and beat Dart 4-2/Harv 4-2/Prin 3-1/Quin 3-2.
They were out shot by Prin/Quin/Cornell by a total of 106-65 and had trouble with all of these teams speed.
The line of Gabel/Giguere/Pejzlova in these 6 games had 12G/17A with Gable (9) and Pejzlova (3) accounting for the 12 goals and Giguere accounting for 9 of the 17 assists.
The rest of the team had 4G (all against Dart 2 and Harvard 2) and 6A, 5 of the 6 against Harvard 3 and Dart 2.

I did a deep dive into that BC/BU comparison point, for those of you interested in such things https://www.bcinterruption.com/bost...eagles-boston-university-northeastern-harvard

Thanks once again for putting up and maintaining your Pairwise Calculator. With whatever is going on with USCHO's version and their lack of updates, being able to check yours the last couple weeks has been a great alternative.

Ditto here. Great job TTT.

All it lacks is a sponsor. I recommend: The BCI PairWise Calculator, brought to you by Ben and Jerry's.

Why not keep it in the NCAA family? https://foodscience.psu.edu/workshops/ice-cream-101

With additional support from your local PBS station: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCCMOo8pzgw

“We came all the way from Wisconsin for this ice cream.” (At 00:09 of the first!)

Might help soothe the jitters before 5:00/8:00 pm.

This highlights the fact that the Common Opponents criterion still has major issues. Clearly, the current approach is better than the original, in which a team that played four games against a weak common opponent and one against a strong one had a huge advantage over a team whose schedule was the other way around. That it took the NCAA two decades to comprehend what a flaming disaster that was is a real indictment of their capacities.

But the fact that BC's and BU's single games against Harvard have such a disproportionate influence upon the outcomes is a problem. Those two games ought to count for a lot less than the six games that make up the calculation for each of the other eight common opponents they have. One fairly simple option would be to multiply the winning percentage against each common opponent by the smaller of the number of games played against by he two teams in the comparison. In the case of BU and BC, that would mean multiplying their winning percentage against Northeastern by 4, their Win% against each of the other Hockey East teams by 3 (increased to 4 against any team that both BU and BC play in the HE playoffs), and that against Harvard by 1.

Or, they could just eliminate the common opponents criterion altogether, seeing as how it's just a legacy element from the days when there were two other badly flawed components to the calculation that the NCAA finally got rid of.

They may as well get rid of RPI as well, while they are tossing out flawed elements.

Yeah it's weird and dumb. BUT, I don't think we get to complain too much, because BU does hold a 2-1 H2H advantage on us. It's not like we couldn't have prevented this.

Better yet, you (BC) can still do something about it.

Well, as expected, that BU win over Harvard flips BC out of an NCAA tournament position despite the big advantage in RPI for the Eagles.

The Eagles will remain "Out" unless & until the Terriers lose 2 more games, OR if the Eagles match up with and defeat the Terriers in WHEAs.
