Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

Just looked at the QU results to make sure I remembered correctly. They beat Clarkson.

This weekend will tell us something. If the Q beats Clarkson, it starts to look tough for Clarkson and Quinnipiac starts to look a bit more real. But they don't play anyone again until a single game against Harvard. If Clarkson can't beat Q and Harvard can't beat either BC or Q, those teams start to really look suspect anyways and Q's schedule continues to look rather soft. As we in the WCHA learn over and over, the tide doesn't raise all ships just because...

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

Either Clarkson is the most unimpressive #5 in the history of women’s college hockey or parity has arrived to women’s college hockey.
Their biggest claim on #5 is a victory over Dartmouth, and a 2-1 record against St. Lawrence. :o
Otherwise they are 0-2 against BU, 0-1 against Quinipiac, and a tie with Harvard, (itself a rather lackluster season).
Looking at the WCHA standings, I’m leaning towards parity.

I get what you are saying, BC has yet to even play their biggest rival, while the WCHA teams have all played not only their main rival twice, but their #2 & #3 as well. BC’s biggest test thus far has been against St. Lawrence, which they only managed to beat once.
Quinipiac has played 1 game against St. Lawrence & Clarkson (1-0-1), otherwise nobody.
Other than BU & St. Lawrence, everyone else out east has played a cupcake schedule so far.

Everyone's a cupcake*! Yay!

*does not apply to WCHA

BC 10 Hahvad 2, yep until I see otherwise everyone but BC is cream puff, cupcake what ever you want to call it in the East. Wonder what ******ed BC off so much that after a 2-2 tie they turn on the burners and get the next 8. WOW.

Very impressive indeed, but it makes me wonder how Harvard could possibly let that happen without pulling their goalie for the entire 3rd period.

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

Harvard pulled their goalie in the 2nd period and then pulled their goalie again in the 3rd period.

I thought you were at work! ;) I've never understood the rationale behind pulling your goalie, other than at the end of the game when you're behind by one or two (the only other exception being at the very end of a period, with just a second or two remaining and the faceoff in the offensive zone.

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

Looking at the WCHA standings, I’m leaning towards parity.

I have only seen Penn and BU from out East & BU was marginally OK. I have no idea how things will shake out out East. I have though, seen all the WCGA except OSU & I listened to their games against Minny on the radio. Parity is happening in the WCHA. The creampuff there is Mankato but they are dressing 11 freshmen who looked plenty fast enough that they could become a real threat in the next couple of years. I don't think anyone was expecting MN to be the monster they have been the past few years and they are not. UMD has been fading the last few years & it looks like UND is sinking also; too soon to say if that is a trend for UND. But in the WCHA there are fewer sure things and that is a trend.

I wish there was more interleague play so it would be easier to judge. As it is now the big guns out West have played each other & paid with some losses while BUs schedule looks soft - but who knows if that is reality or just parity? Need more data points.

No sorry I meant they yanked Maschmeyer and put in Laing, then in the 3rd yanked Laing and put in Maschmeyer -- they didn't play with an empty net!

Also I was at work, but I "wasn't" "watching" the game on my "phone"

Ah, got it, "wink" "wink". ;) ;)

P.S. Looking down at Conte right now on a different tab...GO GOPHERS! :)

Ha, me too, but I'm thinkin' the BC men turn it around today!
Maybe it is hard on their psyche to know that they are the second-best team that calls the rink home.

Hey at least they aren't so insecure to take their puck, go home, and build their own rink so that the women can have their own arena like a certain other maroon and gold team we know of :D

Not quite what happened, but it makes a good story. ;)

Maybe they should have played with an empty net. ;)

One of my kids played for a coach for a few years who was known for doing that in occasion. Actually it wasn't a bad strategy: he would typically do it to make a point, often when the forwards weren't back checking or generally the team was playing lackadaisically. Without a goalie they had to play with more intensity to avoid being completely annihilated. If the game was already out of reach, the purpose was mostly to make sure they would play harder in upcoming games. If the game was still close, he'd only do it until the team picked up the pace and maybe one goal scored against.

Look... there are plenty of sponge cakes in the WCHA too.

BSU just made UMD look like a twinkie.
BSU also got swept by Ohio State making BSU suspect as a puff pastry.
Wisco struggled for 2 periods to pull away from UNH (a serial jelly donut), and barely got by the aforementioned puff pasty. Wisco might be as soft as cheese whiz.
Minnesota got beat up by BSU during 4-nations, which makes me think there's some cream filling in the latter half of Minny's line-up.
Not to mention that BC (who you say is not a cupcake) struggled with SLU - a team that is more up and down than jello mold on a freight train. BC might stand for boston cream.
Let's not leave out QU, who tied Penn State (a soft cookie if I ever saw one), and is a Suzy Q until further notice.
And finally, Clarkson and BU have had some ugly battles with chocolate frosting teams.

You say the East is all cupcakes. If that's true, then all of D1 hockey is one big whoopie pie.
