Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

To my mind we're at the point there's a clear top four, not top three. Quinni have earned the right to be in the conversation until further notice. Notice might of course come on Friday at Dartmouth or Saturday at Harvard.

1. Boston College -- Going with my heart and not my head here, the stats favor Minnesota for success against strength of schedule, but a team that can do that thing to Harvard has to be favored to win any single-game matchup
2. Minnesota -- Didn't look great in the first Princeton game, did look great in the second, and they won't be taking an eighteen-hour bus ride to the Frozen Four
3. Quinnipiac -- Their SOS has been quietly improving. Not that far behind Wisco in SOS and way, way ahead in win %. Dartmouth / Harvard games coming up are big points of comparison with BC.
4. Wisconsin -- Didn't do anything wrong except come east only to play New Hampshire twice, points deducted for cowardice.

Next three are close.

5. Mercyhurst -- They and BC are the only teams with an OPWP below .4 at this stage. But you get credit for taking advantage of your opportunities.
6. Boston University -- Only the teams above them here have a better win %, and OPWP of .47 isn't shabby.
7. Clarkson -- Like BU, not last year's team, but getting the job done.

Next three are very close:

8. Bemidji -- Keep grinding it out against tough opponents
9. UMD -- OPWP about the same as BU, win % isn't as good, Cornell series is the only point of contact between them and the East and Cornell are unusable as a yardstick at the moment.
10. St. Lawrence -- Toughest SOS of anyone other than Cornell, New Hampshire and Minnesota State, and they've hung with the best.

Just outside: Harvard, two good wins out.
A bit further outside: Dartmouth, Ohio State, North Dakota, Princeton: three good wins out

Not sure how you give Hah-vad 10 after the pasting they took from BC but OK. I would also swap BSU & UMD & not just because I hate Shannon Miller with the heat of a thousand suns - I think if it was one game to play on BSU would shut UMD down. I also think the top 3 may be 'pick-em' MN handled WI twice but it is early yet & I still am skeptical about BC. I do wish we could find a way to have more inter divisional play

If the "theme" makes you unsure maybe this will help you see how it fits the bit.

10 Harvard - Aliens "Game over, man. Game over. What the @#% are we gonna do now?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsx2vdn7gpY

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

Star Wars quote theme.

1. BC - “Now, witness the power of this fully operational battle station.”
2. Minnesota - “Strike me down, and I will become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.”
3. Wisconsin - “Only at the end do you realize the power of the Dark Side.”
4. Quinnipiac - “The Force is strong with this one.”
5. UMD - “Try not. Do… or do not. There is no try.”
6. Bemidji - “Judge me by my size, do you?”
7. BU - “You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. …We must be cautious.”
8. Clarkson - “Never tell me the odds!”
9. Mercyhurst - “You’ll find I’m full of surprises!”
10. Harvard - “I have a bad feeling about this.”

Clever you are. Yoda

1 Boston College -- Clear
2 Wisconsin -- Big
3 Minnesota -- Three

4 Quinnipiac -- I agree with wwhyte that the top 4 have separated themselves, though I think QU, despite being undefeated, is a half a step back. Earlier on, they looked a lot more scary, with some absurd shot differentials. Those differentials have come back down to earth. They still absolutely, 100% belong here, though, particularly with the strong weekend they just had against Clarkson and, to a lesser extent, Yale.

5 Bemidji State -- Remarkably close in the rankings to Duluth. Giving them the edge based on aggregate goals for the weekend.

6 Minnesota-Duluth -- See Bemidji.

7 Boston University -- Barely outshot Dartmouth, but has quietly climbed up to 5th in the PWR.

8 Clarkson -- Needing OT to beat UConn is no bueno. Very close with BU, I gave BU the edge based on H2H even though it was a couple months ago. I didn't do the same favor for Minnesota because I really think Wisconsin is the better team, and the Badgers have been much more impressive since that series.

9 Mercyhurst -- I don't know if tying Cornell is really good or really bad.

10 St. Lawrence -- Some damn good results the last couple of weeks vs. QU, Princeton, Harvard, and Dartmouth. They deserve this spot for now.

Considered putting Harvard in 10th but couldn't find enough pieces left over after the BC curbstomping.

Our Top 8 match exactly and I have Mercyhurst at No. 10. So we only differ mainly on St. Lawrence and UND, which I moved up due to their No. 6 and 8T rankings in KRACH and Rutter respectively...but with 9 & 10 you could make a case for several other teams as well.

I was looking over St Lawrence and their results last night and they look like a pretty good team. They are going to warm up against Mankato Jan 3 before playing the Gophers Jan 4 and 6. The Gophs may want to be ready for those games.

Where are you seeing KRACH ratings?

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

1. Harvard - I mean BC.
2. Minnesota - Arms hurt from shooting so much at Princeton. Tough back to back weekends to start 2015.
3. Wisconsin - Yawning and awaiting January 10th at Ridder... circle it
4. Quinnipiac - Another opportunity to justify their ranking with Dartmouth/Harvard on tap
5. MD - Move up on heels of Clarkson's unimpressive weekend <--- specifically, Clarkson just didn't impress vs UConn
6. BSU - Ditto, but not sure if MD should be 6 and BSU should be 5... but had to pick an order
7. Clarkson - You now know why
8. Mercyhurst - Train keeps a rollin'
9. St Lawrence - They're good you know
10. Boston University - By a hair over their cross-river rivals (I love that dirty water)

I will only need to edit this if the Mercy stumbles at Cornell (or if I see someone else's rankings that I like better :) ).

Must move Mercy down after tie with Cornell.

8. St Lawrence
9. Boston University
10. Mercyhurst

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

That's still up from the end of last year.

Ha! Should have taken a closer look. Big oops but I'll leave UND where they are for now.

P.S. How is that KRACH has been operational for Minnesota high schools since the start of their season, but not NCAA D1 which started a month earlier?

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

Big oops for me too, I didn't look closely either. I can't find the current KRACH for women's hockey. I did come across this page with the current Men's D1 KRACH for those that might be interested - that is also out of date on USCHO for the men... http://siouxsports.com/hockey/rankings/krach/

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

Since Shenae Lundberg has faced so many shots lately I was curious on how the teams/goalies ranked in shots faced per game. I have taken the stats page and added a column for Sh/G and sorted high to low. Some interesting observations - Brittany Mowat jumps out with a great sv%, but quite a few sh/g average (31.2). BSU will need her to keep that pace (sv%) the second time through the WCHA schedule. I didn't know how to copy spreadsheet to this post, so here is a link to the file in dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/s/e1zbdsy3b6dioj8/Book3.pdf?n=114460501

**I did equivalent games - total played minutes/60

Bemidji State was playing two goaltenders early in the year, but redshirt freshman Erin Deters, who also had very good numbers, hasn't played since October. They have a scrimmage (sorry, I mean an exhibition) scheduled this week, so perhaps she can get some action and get back into the rotation before Christmas.
