I was going to raise an eyebrow about you leaving out BU but they did just transitively lose to Union, so.

Man, some interesting plots on that chart. Harvard's crash and burn has been similar to Cornell's, only later. The top 4 have earned some serious separation. Quinnipiac and Bemidji have come out of absolutely nowhere but have levelled off.

Fun stuff.

If you know what a falling knife is in stock market charts, you won't see a better example than stock symbol HVD (Harvard). Sell!!!!!

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

Both Harvard and Cornell have the talent to be playing better. It will be interesting to watch the season progress and see which team improves the most.

For every seller there's a buyer, and I believe their stock is oversold, with HVD now due for a rally. Too many market watchers bid them up to unrealistic levels based on unbridled optimism alone, before they even got into the marketplace. We've seen this CEO turn operations around before, and with some strategic restructuring I look for her to do the same with this group in the second half. By all means do not sell short! ;)

I know, I know... but going long on NES (Northeastern) and COR (Cornell) cost me a fortune!

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

I'm glad I missed the cutoff for the poll, because there is not enough difference to put Harvard ahead of St. Lawrence IMO
something cool: it would be nice to see the teams tied with each other play 2 games and see the outcome, I guess we just did this past weekend in Bemidji.

On a sad note, what if Mercyhurst doesn't win the CHA tournament, will they give them an invite to the dance anyway, thereby bumping a deserving team while inviting TWO CHA teams?

1 BC 1-1-3=5
1 MN 2-2-1=5

3 WI 3-4-2=9
4 Quinipiac 4-4-3=11

5 BU 5-5-8=18
5 Clarkson 5-6-7=18

7 Bemidji 8-9-5=22
7 UMD 8-8-6=22

9 Mercyhurst 7-7-10=24

10 Harvard 10-10-12=32
11 St. Lawrence 11-11-11=33

If they don't win the CHA it is hard to imagine that they will still be ranked in the top 7.

Mercyhurst isn't in as much danger as it was last year for the CHA title. They are a good step ahead of everyone else while the rest of us are evenly matched with one another. This is just based on current conditions for teams since Robert Morris and RIT are currently struggling with injuries to key players from last year.

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

Has anyone ever heard of CHODR (pronounced "chowder") -- I was "surfing the net" as the kids say and came across this for the first time. It was described as being similar to KRACH but using goal differential rather than results.

Can't say I dislike these rankings (which has nothing to do with how low it has BU!)

Yes, Robin Lock's ranking. They are usually posted at some point in most seasons, usually later in the year where a couple blowouts don't cause big fluctuations.

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

Assuming scores hold, here is your end-of-the-day Pairwise:

Rank Team Comparisons Won RPI
1 Boston College 15 0.6950
2 Minnesota 14 0.6603
3 Wisconsin 13 0.6463
4 Quinnipiac 12 0.6399
5 Boston University 10 0.5843
6 Minnesota-Duluth 10 0.5724
7 Mercyhurst 10 0.5714
8 Harvard 8 0.5672
9 Bemidji State 7 0.5628
10 Clarkson 6 0.5597
11 St. Lawrence 5 0.5498
12 Ohio State 4 0.5318
13 Dartmouth 3 0.5224
14 North Dakota 2 0.5167
15 Cornell 1 0.5052
16 Princeton 0 0.5030

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

Alright, I'm confused.

According to the RPI:

http://www.uscho.com/rankings/rpi/d-i-women/

--Holy Cross is 2-0-0 (two wins over Sacred Heart) and Sacred Heart is 0-3-0 (two losses to Holy Cross and one loss to Yale).
--Franklin Pierce, St. Michael's, and St. Anselm are all 0-0-0.

But that's not true.

St. Michael's lost to St. Anselm, Holy Cross and Franklin Pierce. They should be 0-3-0.
St. Anselm beat Franklin Pierce and St. Michael's and lost to Holy Cross. They should be 2-1-0.
Franklin Pierce beat Holy Cross, St. Michael's, and Sacred Heart, and lost to St. Anselm. They should be 3-1-0.

So Holy Cross should be 4-1-0, and Sacred Heart should be 0-4-0.

Why is USCHO not counting all of these games? It was made 100% clear to me by the Championships Coordinator of the NCAA that all of these games between D1 and DII teams count in the RPI.

It doesn't affect anyone's RPI but Yale's, but it is skewing Yale's RPI. Yale should be .4781, not .4765 according to USCHO's RPI.
