Tony... Mercyhurst at number 6? A 1 goal win and then tie against Maine and then split with Northeastern. Hmmm... I think they are bubble top 10.
That's fair. I just think 6-1-1 is more than a lot of teams can say right now.

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

1. Minnesota - scraped by Saturday to maintain no. 1.
2. BC - mmm...red velvet cupcakes.
3. WisconSIN - maintained but BC won the cupcake wars.
4. Harvard - Is this team ever going to play a game?
5. Quinnipiac - just win baby.
6. Mercyhurst - they won the coin flip with BU
7. BU - they lost the coin flip with Mercyhurst
8. Yale - don't really know enough about them but what the heck
9. Clarkson - 9 goals against the orange gets them 9th
10. Flickertails - 7 shots against Minnesota Saturday gets them the nickname.

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

1. Minnesota
2. Boston College -- but I actually suspect BC has more depth. Field has been quiet this year and perhaps putting Capizzano on the Field-Anastos line when she's better will unlock that, giving us three strong scoring lines (Kent has earned the right to stay with Skarupa and Carpenter for a few more weeks). Minnesota looks like two really strong lines is its ceiling.
3. Wisconsin -- not always convincing against Bemidji

--- BIG GAP ---

4. Mercyhurst -- I have both Northeastern and Maine down as a team that can beat anyone on the day this year, except one of the big three above, so Mercyhurst's non-Ws count less.
5. Quinnipiac -- Undefeated. Penn State tie is baffling but everyone's allowed one.
6. Harvard -- with two weeks practice under their belt they should have sustained better pressure against the Blades.

-- SMALLER GAP

7. Boston University -- they didn't have Poulin for the Maine loss so it counts less, and Maine clearly have flashes of inspiration this year. But it still smells like a surprising lack of depth. Could go back up but if Poulin continues to stay out they could fall further. I reserve the right to come back to this after the Northeastern game on Tuesday.
8. Cornell -- who knows?
9. Clarkson -- they had a lot of inconsistencies last year but came good in the end. Not ready to write them off yet.
10. SLU -- Why not.

Also under consideration:
* Yale -- in my personal RPI wins against Providence are multiplied by a weighting of 0.0000001
* Ohio State -- 5th in the pairwise!
* North Dakota -- kept it close on Friday but what a meltdown on Saturday
* RIT

So I'm thinking USCHO's math is wrong here... lol

http://www.uscho.com/rankings/pairwise-rankings/d-i-women/

Minnesota's KRACH in scientific notation was impressive but BC having an RPI over 1.000 is a new level hahaha

And I think BC having an RPI over 1.000 has put Cornell back as a TUC, yes? Because they now have an RPI of .5002. So it has a knockon effect on EVERYTHING.

5. Quinnipiac -- Undefeated. Penn State tie is baffling but everyone's allowed one.

Looking at the box score from that tie game, Quinny outshot Penn State 46 to 18. We still don't know if this team is for real - victories over UConn, Penn State, Maine, New Hampshire. Proves they are better than teams outside the top 10. But they do deserve #5 or #6 at this point.

After the UMD series, I was afraid Minnesota was only going to have one really strong forward line. Feeling a lot better about it now, but I still think it's a major open question. I think it's possible by the end of the year, there are three really strong lines. But maybe not.

I was going to address the Minnesota assessment as well. Not at all convinced that Minnesota ultimately can assemble only two strong lines from the group of forwards on their roster. I'm not sure they've achieved optimum line combinations at this stage. Despite the success to date...I think a few regulars in the rotation on the top three lines are struggling a bit...early. Certainly not having the impact I believe they will as the first half progresses. Also there are the freshman forwards, pretty talented by all appearances...that I believe will continue to adjust, gain confidence and contribute more. A real potential in my view that finding those optimum combinations, and chemistry can produce three dangerous lines...at least. From the sound of it...I think I'm a little more confident Minnesota will find at least three lines capable of scoring than KTDC is. As always, avoiding injuries would help a bunch in that endeavor.

I assume games played through Tuesday the 28th should be taken into consideration when ranking the teams this week?

Good question... wouldn't Monday and Tuesday games be considered the new week, just like this coming weekend?

Could be. I'm just ranking start of the week like the USCHO rankings. Suppose I could always tweak mine if I thought it was warranted and tweaking was approved by the forum executive board.

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

Yes they will count, ppl are free to factor them in or not, or to change their rankings after Tuesday

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

Not much to talk about here. If the #1 vs #9 this weekend was indicative of women's NCAA hockey it's hard to see how this product is improving in the long run. Looks like we're not even to the point where we can "rank" more than five teams. Seriously.

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

1) Minnesota
2) Boston College
3) Wisconsin
4) Harvard
5) Quinnipiac
6) Mercyhurst
7) Boston University
8) Cornell
9) North Dakota
10) Winner Tuesday of the Clarkson-St Lawrence game.

After the first 3, you can put the rest of the team names in a hat and draw them at random.

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

On the question of Minnesota's depth, count me among those who think they could have three very strong lines by the end of the season. Obviously, the Brandt/Cameranesi/Menefee line is raining destruction at a rate that would make the 8th Air Force proud but there's more.

It's looking like the second line will be Schipper/Bona/Lorence. All three have scored in the past and Lorence has done so this year, too. Bona has been bounced around a lot and looked unconvincing for the first couple of weeks but she was considered a dark horse Kazmeier finalist coming into the season and looks like she's settling in. Schipper has looked really strong and the goals will come.

The third line is Pannek/Wolfe/Piazza and I've really enjoyed watching them play. Piazza is scoring and it looks like she's going to be a beast. Wolfe spent all of last season playing defense and looks like she's still adjusting back. Kelly Pannek looks like she's trying to set some sort of record for the most times almost scoring her first goal and I'm pretty sure they'll start to go in before too long.

So I feel pretty good about the forward lines. And having McMillen and Ramsey on the blueline is kind of like having an additional set of scorers.

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

1. Boston College, the evidence is beginning to be overwhelming.
2. Harvard, they have to be good just based on geographical proximity to BC.
3. Quinnipiac, that's Connecticut, right? pretty close to Boston
4. Cornell, this team looks super strong to me as the only negatives on their record are the 6-2, 6-2 losses to BC (see above).
5. Maine, the current holders of the Championship Belt
6. Boston University, if only their best player had not missed the games against Maine they probably still would hold the belt.
7. Mercyhurst looks pretty good, wasn't that western powerhouse Mankato that they swept?
8. St. Lawrence, still playing huge after the early season close loss and tie against the very, very clear number 1.
9. Wisconsin because they were number 1 a couple of weeks ago and just because they lost a couple of games they shouldn't be downgraded that much, they did come back to sweep Bemidji.
10. Bemidji, why not?

I haven't been able to watch them yet this year, but per the stats there are 13 F listed with at least 1 point, 10 of them with 3 or more points. Three (Wolfe, Garsone, Cline) are listed as D/F so not sure if they're primarily being used as F by playing time or not.

Wolfe is playing as a forward on a line with the two frosh, Pannek and Piazza. The line looks increasingly dangerous as games go by. Wolfe has not appeared as a D so far this season. She is being used as a forward.

Garzone is a regular D, usually about 4 or 5 on a rotation that sees the top 3 getting most of the time but with 4 (Garzone) getting lots of important minutes. Cline is also exclusively D, 5 or 6 on the 6 D rotation.

Both Garzone and Cline get some time on the PK, they are both playing important minutes. Both are to this point important members of the D corps.

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

1. Minnesota
2. Boston College
3. Wisconsin

BIG GAP

4. Quinnipiac
5. Boston U
6. Harvard
7. SLU
8. Cornell
9. Bemidji
10. Clarkson

4-10 pretty much a toss-up with a few other teams. Northeastern, UMD, UND, Mercyhurst have really underwhelmed and don't yet show they belong.
