Ford field attendance

Re: Ford field attendance

Wow, lots of Detroit bashing.

If you do some research you'll find something you can enjoy safely in Detroit or the surrounding area. The museums alfablue mentioned are great. Bring or rent a car and the possibilities expand (it's the motor city and part of that means needing a car to get around the metro area).

Being a nerd, I recommend the Henry Ford as a great place to visit while in Detroit (you'll need a car to get there from Detroit though).

Detroit is not DC or Denver. Both of those locations were great. But I fail to see how it is worse than St Paul, St Louis or Buffalo. I was bored to tears in both St Paul and Buffalo because I didn't have a car and couldn't find anything to do. Downtown Buffalo was deserted. However, I'll admit it was my own fault for not doing some research and finding things to do, or ways to get around.

Any big city has bad parts of town and safe parts of town. I've walked areas of Detroit at night by myself or with just one other person (I may have been worried the whole time, but I've been just fine). I've even left my car unlocked (accidentally) in a downtown parking structure for 2 days.

All of that said, if I didn't live locally and don't have my team playing, I wouldn't attend this years Frozen Four. However, that would be because of the football field, not because of Detroit.

Does this count if it was a rusted 1978 Pinto wagon? :D

Sorry couldn't resist.

But seriously Detroit has plenty to do in that area and will be in Mardi Gras mode with the Tigers opening game. Go. Have fun. Enjoy.

Re: Ford field attendance

We usually go with a group but this year only 2 are travelling to Detroit....a few passed on ordering and some have sold their tix.....I was never enthused about seeing Detroit or watching the National Championship in a football stadium......why doesn't the NC$$ play the finals of the basketball tourney outdoors that is just as strange as this is.....the competing teams deserve better than this.......

Re: Ford field attendance

I was in Detroit for the GLI this season, and if it wasn't for the friends that I got to hang out with, it would have sucked, big time.

Right after the hockey game, we went to Hockeytown to eat (makes sense, right?), it was closed. Yeah, that makes sense.

I wasn't impressed with the bars, yeah, they were there, but it just didn't seem like there was much happening at them. Granted this should be better for the Frozen 4, but it didn't make a good impression on me.

We were at Greektown, at about 1AM, right after the people mover stopped, the hotel was about 5 blocks away. We asked the security guard at the casino if he thought it was safe to walk back to the hotel, his response "I wouldn't walk that and I live here". We got a cab to go 5 blocks.

From my personal experience, only a couple months ago, I have no motivation to go back there. I probably will at some point, for the same reason I did this time, to meet up with and hang out with friends I haven't seen in a while.

One positive note about Detroit. We went to a little bar, not in downtown, one night, called the Cadieux Cafe (sp?). They had "feather bowling", which was awesome. The best I can describe it was curling, but with a dirt lane and a wheel of cheese. I highly recommend checking it out. Also, the mussels at the place were damm good as well. Call ahead to try to get a reservation to feather bowl, they said they are usually very busy.

Amen. I'm sure there's one event here and there that you can do and not get killed doing it. The problem is when people start saying "yeah, Detroit's not so bad, at least we're not Buffalo". I guess if you'd prefer to be killed by someone else than being bored to death, sure.

My other issues with Frozen Four cities is the notion out of some people that if you just had a car and a week to stay there you'd see all sort of wonderful things within a 200 mile radius. Here's the facts, most people don't have a car as they fly in, not everybody wants to drive in a strange city, and its cost prohibitive in many places to park in a downtown hotel or try to figure out the rules for on street parking. Couple that with a usual lack of public transportation and not having a ton of time between games to roam around. In short, a city that doesn't have something to do in its core is useless. You shouldn't have to send out a search party, nor rent a vehicle and drive 20 miles, to find something to do. That's why people enjoy the DC's, NYC's, Chicago's, Boston's, New Orleans' etc when they stay there. You're right in the middle of everything. Its why Cincy, Baltimore, Philly, Detroit, St. Louis, KC, etc etc all suck @zz. There's nothing to do, except in some cases to run for your life.

Bottom line: Detroit blows

Re: Ford field attendance

This is all you need to know about Detroit:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100308/ap_on_bi_ge/us_downsizing_detroit

PS - Those ultra classy "brand new casinos" of yours are going bankrupt. Big surprise, given that the locals have no money to spend at them, and the city isn't exactly a hopping tourist destination.

The bottom line is, you need a venue that attracts fans even if their team isn't playing. DC did that. While the participating schools showed up in good numbers, you still needed the other fans to show up to make the event a success. I can't tell you how many die hard hockey fans who never miss a FF either blew this one off or held their nose and booked the tickets. If Michigan and Michigan State aren't playing in the final the arena is going to be 3/4ths empty - and that's in no small part because the city its located in is a crime riddled dump. Don't you remember that Onion story about the city's tourism bureau had to cancel its "Hidden Detroit" promotion after two dozen tourists were murdered? :D :D :D
You do realize that the Onion is all Fake news right??

Baltimore and Philly have tons to do in the downtown core. Baltimore has a great harbor area with history, museums, shopping and restaurants. And Philadelphia is loaded with world class museums, fantastic walking neighborhoods, important historic sites and great food options, all a 10 minute subway ride from the sports complex.

Granted, St, Louis, KC, Cincy and Detroit aren't at Philly or Baltimore levels in terms of downtown atrtactions. But there are some interesting places to spend some time if you are little bit creative. KC has some of the best BBQ you'll ever eat, and the Truman Library, a solid art museum, the Negro Leagues baseball museum/KC Jazz Museum in the same building. St. Louis has the Arch, the Anhauser Busch Brewery, and Union Station. Each city has something interesting to offer if you are interested enough to go and see it.

We all like our hometowns but Detroit really is the worst city in America. I've been there a few times and it seems to get worse everytime I go. Sure, the Frozen Four will be full of people, but why is it that the "Hobo Convention" the city has been hosting for the past 5 years is still going on? :)

Re: Ford field attendance

Wings and Pistons will both be playing at the Cobo Convention Center real soon from what Ive been hearing.

You've been hearing very wrong, as Cobo Arena is presently being torn down to make way for the convention center's expansion. The current scuttlebutt is for the Wings to play at the Palace temporarily until a new arena is built to host both the Pistons and the Wings near Comerica Park, if the city and the Wings cannot agree on a short-term improvement plan for Joe Louis.

Bottom line: Going by that reasoning, it shouldn't be worse than those other places like Cincinnati, Baltimore, Philly, KC, St. Louis, etc. other than the fact that they decided to put a retarded twist on it by putting it on a football field. Itza twiiist!

Swami, I've been to these places and they blow dogs. Baltimore sucks with a capital S. It gives Detroit a run for its money as the most run down city in the country. Okay, so you can see Ft McHenry and a couple of blocks that have been gentrified by the harbor. Then, if you dare, you can go see Poe's grave. That's it. Unless graffiti or drug dealing is your thing, you're finished. BTW, somebody forget to tell the bums that the lovely inner harbor area's water fountains should not be used for bathing purposes, because the last time I was there the whole lot of them didn't get the memo.

Philly is even worse. The whole city looks like its covered in black soot. Hit Independence Hall, stop by Geno's for a steak and cheese....and you're done. A boring, dangerous city with no reason to visit. Yes, putting up some generic bars around the sporting complex really adds to the ambience.

So, to sum up, if you're the kind of person who finds Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Cincy, Detroit, Philly, KC, Omaha, Buffalo, or St. Louis to be "happening" places, God bless ya, but you've got an odd sense of what qualifies as a good time.

You do realize that the Onion is all Fake news right??

Ummm...yes sparky I realize that hence the smiley faces at the end of my post. Try to relax a little....

And ummm.... just what hip, happening cosmopolitan Metropolis are you currently residing at there??

Re: Ford field attendance

I've been to Detroit for the CCHA championships and to go to a Tigers game and have had fun every single time.

The People Mover will get you around to a decent amount of downtown without needing a car.

We've had to walk back after the people mover stopped and had no problems. Whether or not you 'feel' it is safe is a personal thing.

Either way the city will continue to get bashed, but if you go into it with a decent attitude, you are much more likely to enjoy yourself.

Ummm...Boston, and if you'd rather spend time in Philly or Baltimore than here you need your head examined.

For the record, putting aside my home town I'd rather be in NY, Chicago, DC, Miami, New Orleans, Denver, etc than any of the crappy cities on my list.

Re: Ford field attendance

People who go to the frozen four this year will have a good time in Detroit. They will come back here and talk about how much of a pleasant surprise it was.

This is what will happen.

Re: Ford field attendance

So what I've learned from this thread is that the "Boston A**hole" stereotype is pretty accurate in the case of some residents. :p

You want to keep believing that the Northeast is God's country and the only part of America worth visiting, you go right ahead. The rest of us know better.

Boston!! Christ!! I wouldn't want to go there. To many Patroit fans, and too many Red Sox fans. No thanks!! :p
