Ford field attendance

Re: Ford field attendance

DC may have been considered a reach, but it was wildly successful. I just can't fathom why they picked one of the worst cities in the country to try this in.

How could anyone have possibly enjoyed the Washington DC Frozen Four when 1 in 5 people there live in poverty?

Re: Ford field attendance

If they were going to do this anywhere and not have to worry about getting people to show up, it should have been at the Super Dome in New Orleans. No problem getting the 70K or so to watch hockey down there, regardless of who's in the Frozen Four. Really, it could be Bimidji, Union, Merrimac and UAH and the place would still be filled with boozed up and falling down hockey fans.
Definitely had this idea when I was down there for the NFC championship. We could have a helluva good time with a frozen 4 in that city.

Re: Ford field attendance

Detroit sucks. Reading The Economist last week, there's a proposal by the mayor to level a third of the city and just turn it into nothing, because 40 square miles of the place is abandonded. That's ridiculous and not the kind of setting you want to be in for the sport's signature event.

I'm assuming that Calcutta and Fallujah were booked in early April? Even if my school makes it to the Frozen Four, I have no desire to go to Detroit. I went there once and the city is one big soup kitchen.

Well, ya know, other than the fact that Washington is a world-class city with a few million desirable tourist attractions, I guess it's probably similar to Detroit!

If Washington is "world-class", Detroit is "world-a_s_s"...

Kabul was free though.

and it would have been significant upgrade from Detroit.

You all can say what you want about Detroit and the venue, but in 10 years, is it really going to be that big of a deal that it was in Detroit if your team makes it and wins the whole **** thing. Do you really want to sit there and not go watch in person your school and your team go and collect their National Championship, one that will give you Bragging Rights on here for a whole year, and can often be pulled out to use later on?? And hell, if nothing more, they're their and they don't win, eh, at least you can go get a "I survived Detroit" T-shirt. ;)

Yeah, I hear you man. Imagine leaving beautiful PROVIDENCE, flying into the Detroit Airport (http://www.cnn.com/2010/TRAVEL/02/24/airport.satisfaction.study/index.html), and then having to spend a weekend watching 3 amazing hockey games in a ultra-modern NFL stadium with all the brand new casinos right next to it. Yeah, you really might as well just go to Kabul, they have it so much better than us poor saps in Michigan....

I found your first mistake...

Re: Ford field attendance

It's a big hockey town, centrally located in college hockey territory. Michigan and Michigan State fans will still turn out, even if neither one is playing, and so will other CCHA fans in lesser numbers. At least one of the CCHA schools will likely be in the Frozen Four, though it might not be one of the Michigan schools. Detroit is a major airline hub and flights aren't too expensive, and it's within a long day's drive from nearly every hockey school (minus the Alaskans, the Coloradans, North Dakota, Maine and Bemidji.) The entertainment district of Detroit is right next to Ford Field and is protected well by police, and one could always cross to Windsor if you'd rather not patronize those establishments.

Makes sense to me.
x2.

The only issue I have is that it is in on a football field.

This is the first time in over 12 years that I'm not flying in a day early. Detroit's perception, fair or not, is that it's not a safe city to walk around in. Additionally, casinos seem to attract the lowest common denominator.

Re: Ford field attendance

it's too bad that many of you have very closed minds of the city of Detroit. Reality is not nearly what preception is.

I can deal with you all complaining about Ford Field (but that horse died just after they announced the venue- it's NOT going to change).

But to keep finding fault in Detroit is just stupid. Did any of you wander around St. Louis? And the vast array of interesting things within walking distance of the hotels, the hockey stadium, and the baseball stadium- oh, yea, there WEREN'T ANY! Downtown St. Louis was just as abandoned as downtown Detroit is- which is to say there are a good number of bars, restaurants and clubs that are a safe walk away from the stadium and hotels.

To base your opinion on Detroit on a trip you made up to 6 years ago misses what has been happening here, and it's sad that you are so afraid of coming here to understand what Detroit is, and what it can be. The one thing I wish was here before the FF or any other national event is the light rail (similar to what was in Denver) that connects the center of downtown to the New Center area- which also includes the museums in between.

Is 40 square miles being torn down? Yes, people have moved away, and abandoned houses- that in the burbs area, not downtown. Are there old buildings downtown that need to be taken down? Of course, just like St. Louis. Are there places to eat? Yes- over 100 bars and restaurants in the square mile of downtown. Can you walk safely? Yes- for the past 3 years, we've spent the CCHA final weekend downtown, and have had a great time- wandering around, checking bars and places to see. Are there homeless- just like DC. If you can't accept homeless people, you need to wake up to the reality of life in the US... just pointing that out.

With Tigers opening day on Friday, the FF on Thurs and Sat- downtown will be quite active the weekend of April 8-10.

If you are afraid of Detroit- must suck to live in fear of such a great city. I actually feel sorry for you, always looking over your shoulder for the boogy man.... If you don't come becuase some homeless guy might ask you for money, you may want to pull your head out of your arse and understand that there are a lot of people in this country who don't have jobs, and can't afford the luxury of going all over the country to watch a simple little hockey championship.

OTOH, if you are willing to check it out, you'll find cool architecture, cool bars, cool restaurants, and a nice view south to Canada. If you can get up to the museums- the Detroit Institute of Art is amazinng, Motown is always available, Historical Society is fun, Science Center is cool, etc etc. And with a car, there's always the Henry Ford. All in all, there are plenty of things to do and see. :)

This is all you need to know about Detroit:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100308/ap_on_bi_ge/us_downsizing_detroit

PS - Those ultra classy "brand new casinos" of yours are going bankrupt. Big surprise, given that the locals have no money to spend at them, and the city isn't exactly a hopping tourist destination.

The bottom line is, you need a venue that attracts fans even if their team isn't playing. DC did that. While the participating schools showed up in good numbers, you still needed the other fans to show up to make the event a success. I can't tell you how many die hard hockey fans who never miss a FF either blew this one off or held their nose and booked the tickets. If Michigan and Michigan State aren't playing in the final the arena is going to be 3/4ths empty - and that's in no small part because the city its located in is a crime riddled dump. Don't you remember that Onion story about the city's tourism bureau had to cancel its "Hidden Detroit" promotion after two dozen tourists were murdered? :D :D :D

Re: Ford field attendance

Alfablue is right. Every American city of any size has areas that are rough and not tourist-friendly and that's part of life in a society where some people (and neighborhoods) are left behind in a post-industrial world.

Detroit isn't Disneyland, but it is a city with a lot to offer if you are at all motivated to seek it out when you're not inside the hockey venue.

Re: Ford field attendance

I was in Detroit for the GLI this season, and if it wasn't for the friends that I got to hang out with, it would have sucked, big time.

Right after the hockey game, we went to Hockeytown to eat (makes sense, right?), it was closed. Yeah, that makes sense.

I wasn't impressed with the bars, yeah, they were there, but it just didn't seem like there was much happening at them. Granted this should be better for the Frozen 4, but it didn't make a good impression on me.

We were at Greektown, at about 1AM, right after the people mover stopped, the hotel was about 5 blocks away. We asked the security guard at the casino if he thought it was safe to walk back to the hotel, his response "I wouldn't walk that and I live here". We got a cab to go 5 blocks.

From my personal experience, only a couple months ago, I have no motivation to go back there. I probably will at some point, for the same reason I did this time, to meet up with and hang out with friends I haven't seen in a while.

One positive note about Detroit. We went to a little bar, not in downtown, one night, called the Cadieux Cafe (sp?). They had "feather bowling", which was awesome. The best I can describe it was curling, but with a dirt lane and a wheel of cheese. I highly recommend checking it out. Also, the mussels at the place were damm good as well. Call ahead to try to get a reservation to feather bowl, they said they are usually very busy.

Re: Ford field attendance

Judging by the seats I got in the lottery I would guess that the lottery attendence will be down significantly. I just hope the bleachers or risers are not too hard on my butt.

I never thought I would go to detroit but I am keeping an open mind. It may well be like st. louis which did seem abandoned at times but I enjoyed my stay. Having a baseball game is a big help. On sat. a ballgame and frozen 4 championship will be great. Hope it is warmer that the st. louis ballgame I went too. Wind off the mississippi was chilly.

I would prefer a smaller venue but in the interest of just trying something different I am giving it a shot. Good hockey will make it all alright (and a safe cab ride.)
