Since I noticed that lowering calories and upping exercise wasnt helping my weight issue I decided to lower my sugar intake drastically and in the 3 weeks since I did that I have lost 7 pounds (almost all around the midsection, it is quite noticeable) and my eating habits have normalized quite a bit. Way less snacking, or even desire to snack and I feel about 100% better.

Reading this article today backed up my feelings on the issue: https://www.theguardian.com/society/2016/apr/07/the-sugar-conspiracy-robert-lustig-john-yudkin

Way less sugar; watch the white starch carbs; much more water*. Those are three keys.

Reducing sugar intake can make a huge difference--it did for me. And when you start keeping track of how much sugar is in the food we eat, it is frightening. The sugar industry and the manufacturers who sweeten their products in order to make them sell are killing us at a rate terrorists could only dream of. Sugary drinks alone kill more than 180,000 a year.

My problem is that I've eliminated most of the refined sugars. I eat grains and whatnot but I'm still not shedding the lbs like I'd want. Based on measurements I've added about 5 lbs of muscle and lost another 5 lbs of fat. So the weight is stagnant but still not moving as fast as I'd like.

Must. Work. Harder.

Go by inches lost instead.

My food policy, and this works for me:

If it supports my goals as a long-distance runner, I eat more of it. I do love fruit, as it gives me something sweet. And half my plate/serving vessel is a non-starchy vegetable.

If it does not support my goals overall, I eat less of it. Refined sugar/beer falls into this category. However, I don't eliminate anything, as Paleo was a nightmare for me and giving up sugar for two years only led me to eating all of it when I just couldn't resist the urge any longer. My 35th birthday is coming up on 9/20, and I plan on eating a huge slice of cake.

I think that makes a lot of sense. Right now I just need/want to drop weight. My cardio seems to be fine. My plyo workout tonight had me above 174 bpm for 44 minutes straight peaking at around 195 average around 165 for an hour.

Saw the lowest number on the scale in 7.5 years earlier this week. I gained 30lbs since meeting my husband. Still have about 88lbs to go, but definitely making progress. Completed a practice run for the 5K I'm running in October in 51minutes (3.2 miles). The biggest issue I'm having now is binging. Before our practice run yesterday, I severely overate at lunch and then had to walk the bulk of the run. Not sure how to best curb that other than to set an alarm for when to eat a small amount. Because I work night shift and then switch to day shift mode on my days off, I never know when to eat.

SHUTUPSHUTUP! LALALALALALALALALALALALALAa

No trust me I know, I've went up in weight to like 185 even while working out 5 times a week (lifting, sprints, core, and mobility stuff)., I was down to like 160 at one point but that was a bit excessive and I def wouldn't play hockey well if I tried to get there again. For a while I was like 178 but I'm guessing I put in some muscle just from the extra workouts over the summer.

I would think Bob is right, just try and measure the fat as much as possible and don't try to go for something totally unattainable/excessive as far as weight.

In January 2014, I weighed 242 with a 43" waist and 48" hips. Today, I weigh 213 with a 30" waist, 35" hips, and can wear a 34 pair of pants.

So while my weight hasn't changed all that much, I've lost plenty of fat.

I way overdid it today. That was a mistake and a hard lesson to learn.

I mowed the lawn (actually burns about half the cals a tough P90x day does, so it's not exactly easy) and pulled a full chest and arms day.

Why must you post such things for me to read as I sit here drinking my frappuccino? Mmmm...coffee milkshake. Delicious sugary death.

Yup. I actually cut refined sugar, pop, candy, bakery out of my diet decades ago...immediately after college. Cutting sodium down has been far more difficult. The world gets gluten free, but it does not get low sodium.

As a once in awhile treat, a Frappucino is not that bad. It only becomes a problem when you have one every day.

Personally, when I walk into a coffee shop (f-ck Starbucks), I order a hot, black coffee.

As for people who cut all refined sugar out of their diet, not even making room for birthday cake: if YOU want to eliminate anything, fine. But please, keep it to yourself. Don't ruin the fun for the rest of us.

A little bit of a potentially bad thing isn't going to kill you (think: rhubarb, or Frappucinos).

Too much of a good thing can kill you (think: water).

For 'ewe, LWB, and those of you just getting started: this is what you can have if you stay with it.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/54862062@N08/29670255346/in/dateposted-public/" title="medalrack2"><img src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8662/29670255346_aa5b8871a0_z.jpg" width="360" height="640" alt="medalrack2"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

I have two more coming this year, and next year's going to be something really special, with 6 marathons, the Kal-Haven Trail Run (33.5 miles), a 100 mile ultra at Run Woodstock (Pinckney, MI), and the full distance duathlon (112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run) at Michigan Titanium triathlon/duathlon.

This has not been easy at all. I've overslept and missed runs, I've overtrained in some cases, I've overeaten, and in some cases, I've starved myself. But at any rate, I've stayed with it, and thanks to the idea of Relentless Forward Progress, I can't wait til the future gets here.
