Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2016: Because "blob" is not an acceptable shape.

I can tell running, cycling, yoga, and Pilates is giving me results. Bought a pair of size 34 jeans and they're loose. Not only that, I look in the mirror, and see that my love handles are disappearing.

6 days until my ultra-marathon. A spring and summer's worth of training is winding down and I finally get to run the 50 on September 24.

I'm also expecting to gain some weight this week. My activity is winding down while the calories remain constant.

Up to 4 minute run, 2 minute walk!

Good job, good job!

4 days until ultra-marathon go time. Some things I am remembering for race day:

1. Start slow and keep it that way.
2. Eat and drink at all the aid stations.
3. Liberally apply Body Glide/Vaseline before the race and midway through the race. No one wants to chafe!
4. Try and get some sleep this week.

We are thinking of getting a rowing machine. Anyone with experience good or bad that they are willing to share?

Concept 2 rowers are pretty much the gold standard and pretty much the only ones used by rowing teams and CrossFit gyms. They are fairly reasonably priced as compared to treadmills / ellipticals etc. Everyone I know with one has gotten years of reliability from them.

2 days until ultra-marathon time. Time to find out if 24 weeks of training and eating all the food paid off...

What is the success criteria? I mean besides survival. :)

Good luck to you, whatever it is.

Thank you! We will definitely check it out.

I've had a Nordic Track for like 20 years that still works fine, but I am developing arthritis in my hip that might impair my usage in a year or two. So far, physical therapy and a set of specialized exercises have kept it at bay, but I'm told that's a delaying action, not a permanent "cure."

A bit of supportive "advice": it is okay to alternate running and walking for portions of the distance if it helps you catch a second wind. When I ran my first marathon, I averaged 6:53 per mile for the first 19 miles, then 8:34 for miles 19 through 24, alternating between walking and running. If the splits were accurate, I finished the last mile in 5:20. I wonder if it was downhill or something.....might have been merely adrenaline....

While I've run several marathons, that was far enough for me.

I hope you emerge just fine from the experience.

Did not finish due to dehydration. At mile 29, I drank all the Gatorade I had on my water belt, and as I rounded into mile 30, my head started to hurt. Talked to the aid station volunteer, and decided to call it a day because i didn't know if I could snap out of it.

On the bright side, at least I made it to mile 30.

I don't have time to sulk; I have a marathon on October 23.

Congratulations, Bob! :) I know you wanted to finish, but you should be so proud that you completed what you did! Always better to err on the side of safety/health than to end up in trouble...

The aid station volunteer told me I had 6 miles to go to the next aid station, and I just didn't think I could make it that far.

SO, the day after: physically, other than a stiff right ankle, I feel fine. Another day or so of total rest, then a couple days of yoga/Pilates, I should be right back into it.

Mentally, though, this is my first DNF in over 4 years, and the feeling of coming home empty-handed doesn't sit well with me. I have decided to go back next year and try again, this time with a better nutrition/hydration strategy.

Yeah, congrats bob. 30 is a crazy long way to go. Don't let this be an impediment. Keep training and listen to what your body says. This is a learning experiment.

Usually, with dehydration, I can replay the past couple days and say "okay, you screwed up HERE." Here, I haven't found anything out of the ordinary that says I shouldn't have done X.

And I have decided to go back and try again. I have circled September 23, 2017 on my calendar and as soon as I can, I am signing up.

Next race is the Grand Rapids marathon on October 23. I should do well there.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2016: Because "blob" is not an acceptable shape.

Now that I've had a couple days to calm down and evaluate, here's what I learned from the ultra-marathon training process:

1. Eat more food. I know how to eat for 26.2, but eating for 50 is an entirely different experience. Also, I felt caught between wanting to lose weight and wanting to eat enough to be successful. Becoming too preoccupied with my weight only led to busted runs and feeling tired at work.
2. Drink more water. Yes, I "drink the coffee, then I do the stuff." But for next time, maybe it's better if I run, then drink the coffee, then do the rest of the stuff.
3. Get more sleep. This kind of relates to point 2.
4. Don't beat myself up. Everyone else has been more compassionate to me than I have in the wake of Saturday's DNF.
5. Finally, for next year, get on trails and sand. Get ready for that course by training on similar surfaces (dirt/gravel/sand/mud). Also, next time I come to a puddle in the course, just run right through that thing. I can change my socks later.

Most important is #4. It has the greatest impact that tends to spread into every facet of your goals and into your outside life.
