First official thread of Nazareth hockey

I was at the game and as some of the posters and Lerch said in his recap Geneseo dominated the game at all positions except for goalie (and for that matter Geneseo was playing one of their back up Goalies.) I actually kind of was expecting a rebuilding year for Geneseo, but left impressed with the freshman/transfers and think they can make a pretty immediate impact. So despite the loss I left feeling better about the '12-'13 Ice Knights than when I walked in.

Congrats to Naz though. Definitely looks like they are building a great program with outstanding fan/alumni support. Despite last night's results I would expect this to be a pretty rough year for them, but I think they have the support from the administration and the right coach to get into the ECAC WEST mix sooner rather than later.

Have to agree. Geneseo looked decent. Not sure they are Top 3 SUNYAC but they wont be bottom three. If it wasn't for the Naz goalie this game isn't close. Having said that they looked like the old Roll Laker team. Not a lot of talent but will work hard every play. If their goalie can pull some more games like that they will win some more games this season. I don't see them out playing anyone really this season, but the heart is there. They will have some reality check games still. But Roll was a great coach getting the most out of his players. Naz will be just fine.

well their netminder stood on his head for sure..that said they won the game and they are off to a nice start good for the whole program, and their fans.

Re: Age disparity

Durso kid from Fairport with some big words. We'll see if he's singing the same tune in a few months.

Good luck to Nazareth. I hope they get it going and become a solid college hockey program that can thrive in the ECAC West. It's going to be an uphill battle though for sure.

I guess I'm eating crow this morning. Congrats to Coach Roll and Nazareth on the big win. Let's see how they bounce back on Saturday at Geneseo and then the Brockport game on Tuesday.

1800+ is a great crowd too!

Re: First official thread of Nazareth hockey

the atmosphere was amazing at mcc. Geneseo clearly dominated the game but to give naz's goaltender all the credit is just comical. Over 30 of Geneseo's shots were from the outside or into his chest. Sure he made some good saves but lets be real folks. They even counted a little dump in/anytime he touched the puck as a shot on goal. Haude is no backup goalie, I have watched him play through the years and is an extremely talented goaltender. He played very well given the circumstances. Every shot Naz had was a quality scoring chance not just a stat padder. Penalty trouble was the only reason Naz was able to stay in the game. Naz's first goal was a complete defensive lapse leading to a breakaway, their second was a one timer that bounced of someone in front and the ot winner was a terrible screen he had no chance on. I don't fault him for those. Tomorrow will be a big test for both teams but I expect Geneseo to come out on top at their home barn for their home opener

I was at the game and agree, dont get me wrong, the Naz goalie had a solid game. But while everyone seems to feel Geneseo dominated the game because of the shot difference 52-23, what I saw was a entire Naz team outhustle a Geneseo team throughout the entire game. With a work ethic like that they will steal a number of games.

It wasn't the shot differential as much as the puck control that led me to say that Gen dominated the game. SOG is only a rough measure of a team's offense - time of possession and puck control leading to quality shots probably is a better indicator, but we kind of have to go by what we see, not the numbers, because nobody keeps track of time of possession. From what I saw of the game, Gen did that very well - Naz was good with counterattacks, but they could easily have given up more goals than they did. Their D did not keep Gen from passing the puck around to set up quality shots.

I will admit, I did not see the whole game because the video stream was frustrating to watch after a while.

Re: First official thread of Nazareth hockey

While it turned out George wasn't on a roll at the beginning of the season, it was nice to see Nazareth pick up its third win of the year today (though officially a tie for the record book), wishing them luck against Curry tomorrow.
