This is a first that everything being said on this post is positive and it a great day for DIII hockey to get a Good Guy like Coach Roll back to DIII. Nazareth certaily is getting some instant credibility with Roll. Hopefully some good rivals will develop for Nazareth with all SUNY schools close by.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – George Roll, head coach at Clarkson University for the past eight seasons, has been named men’s ice hockey coach at Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y. Roll becomes the first head coach in the program’s history on the heels of the Golden Flyers’ recent announcement to add men’s ice hockey to its intercollegiate sports offerings for the 2012-13 season. The team will compete at the NCAA Division III level and will become Nazareth's 24th sport.

Roll was selected following a nationwide search and brings to Nazareth 15 seasons of head coaching experience. He posted a 130-142-33 record over the last eight seasons at Division I Clarkson. He guided the Golden Knights to the ECAC regular-season title in 2008 and the ECAC tournament title in 2007. The Knights won more than 20 games and reached the NCAA Tournament in each of those seasons.

Before that, Roll compiled a 119-74-16 record in seven seasons at Division III Oswego. His best season there was in 2002-03 when the Lakers finished 25-7-1, won the SUNYAC championship and were national runners-up in the NCAA Tournament. Roll was named Division III Coach of the Year.

A native of Blue Island, Ill. (near Chicago) and a graduate of Bowling Green University, Roll has an overall coaching record of 249-216-49 for a .531 winning percentage over 15 seasons. He also served as an assistant coach at Clarkson for eight seasons (1988-96) – the Golden Knights were 176-82-26 during that stretch – before taking the position at Oswego.

Roll served as a graduate assistant coach for one season at Bowling Green (1987-88), where he worked under the direction of legendary coach Jerry York, winner of 880 games over 39 seasons. As a player at Bowling Green, Roll amassed 152 career points on 62 goals and 90 assists and helped the Falcons to a 34-8-2 record and a national title in 1983-84. He has a bachelor's degree in Communications and a Master's degree in Athletic Administration from Bowling Green.

At Clarkson, Roll recruited and coached several players who went on to professional careers, including current National Hockey League veterans Grant Clitsome (Columbus Blue Jackets), Erik Cole (Carolina Hurricanes), Craig Conroy (Calgary Flames) and Todd Marchant (Anaheim Ducks).

“We’re absolutely thrilled that we were able to attract a coach of George’s caliber,” said Nazareth Athletic Director Pete Bothner. “We had a tremendous pool of applicants, but we think that George stood out above the rest.”

Roll also has experience with USA Hockey, having served as a coach at the Select 17 Festival in St. Cloud, Minn. and as a coach at the Select 16 Festival in Rochester. Roll, 48, resides in Potsdam with his wife Paula, son Chris (19) and daughter Sarah (17).

Nazareth last month announced plans to begin a men’s hockey program with a start date of 2012. The Golden Flyers will compete in the ECAC West Division with Elmira, Hobart, Manhattanville, Neumann and Utica.

I'm excited for another team in Rochester. On RIT off weekends I can go watch Naz. Should be fun.

We used to look forward to the trip to Rochester every year to watch the EC/RIT games, missed that but now we'll be able to do it again.

No you really don't have to. They use Red hot for hot sauce not meat sauce like they should. Have yet to go to the Tahou's in Henrietta but I still think Henrietta Hots is the best garbage plate in Rochester.

Any thoughts on where they might play? Is there even an outside shot of them using Ritter at RIT, or am I just being greedy? I know that ice time would be tight with 3 hockey teams and the figure skating club.

If we had the new rink I would say there is a chance they could use Ritter but since we don't I'll say not a chance.
