Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

I think that you are justified in your comments about the offense. They looked totally uninterested in the third period, and Michigan was just as content to sit back, too. They made it interesting in the last five minutes... pop one there and Michigan would have deflated.

Give some credit to that "untypical" Michigan team, though. Ferris may not have been sharp on that 5x3, but there was a good reason. Michigan had few defensive breakdowns last night, and were going to protect that two goal lead. Hogan also made the stops he had to, including some dandy toe stops in the third period.

I suspect that Daniels (and his veiled comments about the offense) will have them rolling tonight in BR. They seem to be a much stronger, confident team there, sans last weekend. I'll be happy taking any points up there.

After Michigan cleared the puck initially on that 5x3 (and after Ferris failed to generate a scoring chance), we were flat-out sloppy with the puck, while Michigan was content to control the puck and click off the 2 minutes.

I'm not sure how the hell we're going to score goals. We've got 53 in 17 CCHA games, and while that is one off of the league high, that's just barely over 3 per game. And I'm not really sure how we're doing it. Outside of Riley (16) and Chupp (7), there isn't a lock to get someone else into double digits in goals. Somebody's got to step up and put the puck in the net. The defense is certainly doing its job.

By looking at your statistics, though, you have 10 skaters with double digit points. One of the keys to stopping your offense is taking away your blueliners, which make up 30% of your team's total points. So, if the Riley/Chupp/Haines line isn't scoring, and your defense men are not scoring, then you have a problem. Michigan did that successfully. Can't say that they can do it at Ewigleben, since the stats show a much different FSU team there.

I actually thought it was your second and third lines that were more dangerous last night... Lewicki etc.

Michigan is not a consistent team.. you'll get plenty of chances tonight, between their sloppy and tentative road play and Ferris' confident home play.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

I got a contact for you guys. I think that is a great idea CCHAFan. The guys name is Ross, he is the VP of Production and has a HUGE say on what games to show, here is his E-Mail address: rmolloy@cbs.com

I think we should all send a letter saying how thankful we are they showed Ferris Hockey and ask them to show more in the future.

What do you guys think?

Hey Guys,

I sent Ross an E-mail and below was his response:

I'll credit that to Chupp being out, and that first line having to match up against Hagelin/Rust/Lynch. For being our top line, they're also our most defensive-conscious line. After seeing Riley in warmups, I was seriously afraid of him popping a couple (that kid's got a helluva shot). We did well to shut that down.

Michigan won't be able to get the matchups tonight, won't have any advantage of a home ice crowd, and will have to face a team determined to make up for lost points last night. The safe bet would be on Ferris delighting the home crowd to a 4-2 type win. Bonus points if Michigan walks away with any, and Lord knows they need every last one of them.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Some things I gathered from the game:

1. Michigan is very good. They skate well, they stick handle very well, when they connect passes, it is pretty.
2. Michigan is prone to defensive break downs. And when they break down it is baaaad.
3. Matt Rust is a force on the ice
4. Tommy Hill is HUGE and he looks like he is going to fall over every time he skates.
5. The Ferris student section was so disappointing. They were actually upsetting me. There is no leadership. What is FUSS for if they are going to sit on their hands and tape their mouths shut the whole game? Naturally, there was great energy in the building at the beginning of the game and after the first goal but then it just died. Ferris was 3 minutes from winning the game and that place felt like we were getting our butts handed to us. That last Michigan goal was due to a lack of focus from Ferris. A little more noise and energy from the crowd could have changed everything. Dom is not the only person who wants more butts in the seats and an exciting and fun student section can go a long way in achieving that. We need leadership.
6. The national anthem was embarassing. The four singers had to pass one microphone from one person to another as they each sung a line from the anthem. It was something I would expect to see in an elementary school. This problem could have happened because the amplifier only has one microphone outlet. If that's the case, get a new one! OR there was no planning or communication between the people that organize the talent and the people who organize the equipment. If that's the case, reprimand the manager of the arena. There is no excuse for that on the biggest night of the season for Ewigleben.
7. Ferris has some great goaltending. I knew this before tonight, but WOW.
8. Ferris plays with a great amount of effort. They fly around the ice and seem to annoy the opponent. Good coaching.
9. Ferris can beat a good team without Chupp and Wietecha. As I've said before, they are a deep team on both ends of the ice and that will take them a long way.
10. I only gathered 9 things but a list of 10 is always better.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Nicely done. A couple of things for me to expand on:

5. That shocks me from the student section. I have no idea what to think after reading that.
6. It is my personal opinion that the national anthem should not be sung. It should be played by the pep band.
10. Nice finish. :)

This was a big win for us tonight. The last really tough part of our schedule and we came out of it 3-3. That's a helluva lot better than ending it with a 4-game losing streak. The wheels were this close to coming off from a PWR standpoint.

A couple points of housekeeping:

Miami just beat Alaska 5-0. They're 8 points clear of us now in the standings. The CCHA race, as far as we are concerned, is over. Their win over Alaska could be beneficial to our PWR, as it may push UA below #25 in the RPI, and out of the PWR. If this ends up being the case, that would take two losses out of our record vs. TUC. I don't like rooting actively against other teams, but I'd start pulling for everyone who plays the Nanooks until further notice.

Along those same lines, we need to root like hell for Notre Dame the rest of the way. As long as they stay in the top 25 of the RPI, we keep those two wins vs TUC's. We really need those badly. At the same time, root for Michigan as much as you like, as our split with them won't hurt matters much, if at all. I'd rather have them as a TUC than not.

I would have gone bonkers watching this game. I would have scared half the neighborhood. I feel about 1000% better than I did about 24 hours ago.

Who died? i guess i'll break the ice.

I thought of another thing I noticed at the game Saturday: Mike Fillinger is really really fast. Who won the fastest skater contest in the skills competition? He has never been a game breaker but we're going to need some senior leadership next year to go along with our 3 big incoming forwards (6'2", 6'3", 6'5"). From what I saw on Saturday, Fillinger could fill that role. Don't know much else about him though.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

I would agree with that, Fillinger can definitely fly. If he could take his puck handling up a notch, and find a little chemistry with his linemates he would turn dangerous in a hurry. As for senior leadership, I'm going to guess Wietecha will be wearing an A next year. Redmond is a shoo in for the C if he stays, which I'm not counting on. Wysopal, Menke, Billins, and Embach will all be key for next years team. There's still plenty of hockey left this season though, and hopefully some of the younger guys will step up. By the way, what ever happened to Schmit? He got a lot of playing time last year, and I thought he was a better skater then Hill.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Schmit played Friday night at Yost.

And speaking of Wietecha, what happened to him? Is he injured?

Wietecha had a concussion from the Miami (Ohio) series and that was the reason he was out for the Michigan series. I'm not sure when he will be back.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Did Chupp play saturday... and if he didn't will he return?

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

No, Chupp didn't play last weekend...sorry I don't know of a return date either. I think a lot just depended on how he is feeling and if he feels he is able to play up to his abilities and not hinder the team.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

T.J. You are wrong.

Wietecha does not have a concussion, please do not mention comments on the team unless you know what you are talking about. Then you have coaches read this, tell their players, and the whole league guns for wietechas head when they play him.

I always wondered why Fillinger doesn't play more. I would guess him or Kirzinger are the fastest players on the team. Fillinger reminds me of Corey Couturier in several ways.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Alright Dom... I guess I'll leave all the team info to you? Also, coaches read this? You think they base their coaching strategy based on some message board rumors?

Wow!! Lets settle down Dom,

I know T.J. and he knows what he is talking about, but if your brother told you something else well then share it. Don't even try the "Dom? Who is Dom?" Sorry, but your secret is coming out. I've been reading this board for months waiting for you to slip. There are several posters here who have talked about this in person, and also know the facts (and I can prove these facts). You have at least 3 usernames (FerrisStateHockeyFan, CCHAfan, and DomHennig). If you're "going to the NHL early" like FerrisStateHockeyFan (AKA you) claims it's time to grow up!!

Hate to call you out, but it needs to be done. You do a lot of good by promoting and bringing excitement to our listeners, but the other half of you acts extremely immature, but hey thats what 18 year olds do I guess.

All right, gentlemen. If he's got multiple handles on here, he sure as hell isn't the only one on this board doing such a thing.

And yes, speaking from experiences around here, players, coaches, and parents do read this board, and do post here. Maybe not in this thread, but they are around. That's all I'm going to say on that matter.
