Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

I know all we do is criticize here, but definitely have to give Dom credit where credit is due for a good game on the airwaves.

Nice work brotha..

It's too bad that all you see is the negative. On this thread, we discuss the merits and faults of the Ferris hockey team and those associated with it. I think we have all been very fair and honest.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

After this weekend of hockey, I think I have this team figured out. They cannot be placed neatly into a ranking where we could say, "they are just a little better than this team and just a little worse than that team." Ferris runs a system that this group of guys is particularly good at executing and that is why most of the teams they play will be disposed of. But there are a small amount of teams that are so talented and so well coached that Ferris just doesn't have enough. The reason that Ferris has the capability of upsetting any team in the country is because that opponent is unaware or unprepared for Ferris' system.

In the end, I expect Ferris to end the season in 2nd place in the CCHA and 4th in the tournament.

You hit the nail on the head there. The thing this weekend isn't about Ferris not being a good team they are but they got out coached this weekend. What was the difference for Ferris in the two games in oxford helped Miami this weekend. Ferris runs a tight neutral zone trap and it gave Miami fits. Miami used that tape made adjustments and took advantage of taking Ferris out of their comfort zone. Miami adapted to Ferris this weekend and Ferris didn't have an answer, it was great for me to see as a Miami fan their ability to not force the passes and stick along the wall in the offensive zone while Ferris clogged the passing lanes. Wouldn't be too hard on this team guys you still have a good squad, but to be honest Miami just had more talent.

No offense but it's not gonna happen (hopefully)!

Don't speak too early. Miami wasn't going to sweep michigan either and neither was sparty. Nor was BG going to beat Michigan or were they going to lose 5 in a row but all happened this year. Michigan isn't as good as portrayed and Ferris is better than most give them credit for. I wouldn't be surprised if Ferris swept Michigan they are the better team.

P.S. Miami sweeping Michigan sent them into the dark spiral they were in the top 10 when they played Miami....

I believe Michigan was #5 when the wheels fell off the cart. Ferris is the more cohesive team yes, but if by some miracle Michigan learns team play by Friday...

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Okay. The monster truck PA announcer is urging the crowd to get a chant going. What the **** is this, Big Rapids Middle School?
He's probably the same bum that does the FSU football games as well.

Wow, I never thought I'd see the day that someone implied a Ferris State National Championship.

Clearly you have not read Bulldog's posts over on D2Football when he gets a going on the glory years of Ferris football and how the NCAA screwed Ferris out of the D2 Playoffs back then. ;)

Just for reference's sake (forgive me if this was in joke), Jason DaDay is the PA announcer and acts on instruction from the athletic department. He also is the radio play-by-play for football and most home basketball games.

The asking of the chants was in coordination of cheerleaders holding up signs, and I'm sure on the direction of his superiors.

Again, forgive if the criticisms were made in joke.

So we have cheerleaders at hockey games and the athletic department is instructing the PA announcer to get chants going at 5 PM hockey games. What time did amateur hour in the athletic department begin?

This is a wonderful start to the week. If it gets worse, I don't want to know about it.

They're not cheerleaders. I know a cheerleader when I see one and they are not cheerleaders. I think they are called "The Bulldog Pups". They are more like floozies in sweatsuits. They are there to give my wife something to criticize while I am watching the game.

Speaking of cheerleaders, has Richard been at the games? There is no one more synonymous with Ferris State hockey than he.

Wow. Now there is a name from the past...

I've got a Richard story, but it is actually a good one.

The pups, announcer starting chants, and some of the stupid stuff the mascot does reminds me of high school stuff, but don't blame any of them for doing their jobs...these are all Cole's "bright" ideas.

Besides all that the weekend will be interesting. Excited to head back to Yost. I think the last time I was there was for a OSU game Montoya's freshmen year.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Let's just say this: sticking cheerleaders in the student section given the crew we had when I was there, it wouldn't have ended well.

The people that conjure up crap like this need to pay attention to how a game is done at Yost and Munn, as well as other places that have successful programs across the country. We're a Division I collegiate program. Let's act like one, shall we?

They aren't cheerleaders. They run little promotions at intermission and at stoppage of plays. I think it's mainly to try to get people (students) involved more than just sitting in the stands and to give some entertainment.

But what do I know.

With all due respect to your opinion, and you usually have plenty of good ones, running things like they do at Yost and Munn isn't very valuable advice to program like Ferris. Big Rapids isn't Ann Arbor or Lansing in terms of population and Ferris isn't MSU or Michigan in terms of enrollment, neither comparison is even close. What's the percentage of the Ferris alumni who stay close enough to Big Rapids after graduation to attend games regularly? Hammer, you're obviously an alumni. How many games have you been to this year?

Look, attendance has dropped over the past several years. What they're doing with different promotions and atmosphere type things is trying to put a**es in the seats. Maybe that turns off traditional fans, but the tradtional fan base seems to be shrinking and not growing. At least they're not coming to games like they used to. An athletic department in Ferris' position has to be proactive. Some ideas aren't going to work and some will, but you have to try new things if what you're doing isn't working.

Those are good points. At least they are trying. At the same time it's frustrating they can't sell that place out on students alone. You got 10,000+ students on the BR campus plus people in the community. Besides going to a bar there isn't anything to do there on weekends most of the time.

Yes, Jason is the PA announcer and acts on instruction from the athletic department. This was a written announcement he had to do as part of his job. He is a really good PA announcer, and way better than anyone else they have tried out.
