Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

For a Ferris State hockey player to be named all-American is more difficult than if he plays for a bigger school with greater tradition. The numbers these guys are putting up offensively and defensively would warrant major consideration if they played for a larger school. But if you play for a small school with very little winning tradition, you almost have to have astronomical numbers. However, if they continue on the current pace, i'm sure Redmond would get a serious look.

Redmond better get to the 'elite' level this year, as I'm betting he goes pro after this season.

I would be surprised honestly if Redmond left school early. I can't see him becoming an AA this season, but I think CCHA 1st team is a very reasonable goal. I think the best shot for an AA on this team would be Nelson if the great numbers continue.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Maybe they aren't elite and everything is just coming together as a unit. That is definitely a possibility. Maybe if you put them on another team, they would just be average. But let the numbers do the talking. defensively they have been nothing short of great; and i don't go throwing those words around. They are the core players for one of the best defenses in the country. Could they be this successful if they were just above average. I suppose it could happen if they had great chemistry and a successful scheme and maybe that's what it is. But from what I can tell, elite is an appropriate word for those 3 players. Not to mention what they have been able to do on the offensive end of the ice.

Now, I was asking honest questions, not criticizing... so don't take this wrong.

But, I think the reason FSU has been successful this season is a collective buy-in to defensive play and excellent goaltending. It is true that your d-men are solid, but I think it is more the whole than the sum of the parts. They have gotten timely offensive output- but if you want a true measure of what elite play is from both sides of the ice, look at what Wisconsin's defense is doing (and this is coming from a Michigan fan.) If your guys are anywhere close to them, you are on to the best kept secret in the NCAA.

The bit about being on a high profile team is only partially true. If a player warrants individual honors in US college hockey, he is sure to earn it. Even the most biased reporters and coaches in other leagues are sure to recognize that. Just the same, I think their bigger goal is a league title or more. We'll see in the second half of the season.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Hammer and KC8NIY quoted in the Big Rapids Pioneer (Ferris State Hockey's main Newspaper) today:

The article was talking about Ferris Hockey's attendance numbers being up - http://www.pioneergroup.com/article...ts/local_sports/doc4b396a74dde7e838776027.txt but the Pioneer makes you pay to read the articles.

The quote though:

"Not all fans like the earlier start times. Although many internet message boards are often nothing more than a venue for anonymous venom, some, like the popular one on the website USCHO.com, can provide a glimpse into what die-hard hockey fans are thinking.
One poster sugested that earlier start times do more harm than good with younger families' schedules.
"You ever deal with a 7-year-old that hasn't had his dinner at 8:30 p.m.? And do you really want to get your kid dinner at a concession stand?" USCHO.com poster Hammer said. "I can think of a ... lot worse things for a family to do with their children than take them to a hockey game (or most sporting events, for that matter) where they're home by 9:30 to 10 p.m., which is roughly where you're at when you're looking at a 7 or 7:05 p.m. faceoff."
Another poster said the non-traditional start time turns off traditional fans.
"Many, many people view a Saturday evening hockey game as the culmination to the day," the poster KC8NIY said. "You do what you want during the day, then head out for some hockey for the evening festivities.""

Pretty cool, eh?

Either pretty cool or slightly scary that this message board/thread is the Pioneer's source for hockey news.

Holy ****. That's....scary. If I'm a news source, we're all screwed.

And I'm going to borrow that post.

He should have gone to this post:

Oh, and to re-visit another discussion we had about month ago regarding the 5:05 start times, check the box scores for the attendance on Saturdays. It's not pretty when compared to the Friday attendance. I think they blew it on this one.

In order: Opponent, Friday attendance, Saturday attendance:

UConn: 1844, 1091
Robert Morris: 1129, 1146
BG: 1275, 1279 (apparently, according to USCHO, we played that Saturday at Robert Morris *shakes head*)
Ohio State: 1689, 1450
UNO: 1591, 1058

5 Friday games: 7,528, 1,505 average
5 Saturday games: 6,024, 1,204 average

The only times the Saturday games beat the Friday attendance were RMU and BG, and apparently nobody came to either game on those two weekends. This isn't a good trend for attendance the rest of the season. We'll draw for Miami, Michigan and Michigan State, but as of right now I expect the Saturday attendance to be lackluster for the foreseeable future, those three games exempted.

For the full home series this season, the Saturday attendance has been in the toilet when compared to the Friday games. As of right now the Western Michigan game is a complete outlier.

Triple post. Too bad. It's my thread. :D

Does this Zeke have an email address?

Does this Zeke have an email address?

zjennings@pioneergroup.com

The rest of the article explains why it's gonna remain the same; Tom Kirinivic, Ferris' AD, likes the idea, gives 'everyone' an opportunity to go to a game, if only once a week, as, in his mind, some like it later, some like it earlier.

They would also like to expand the 'home-and-away' series, probably with BGSU and ND. We already do it with MSU, um, and WMU. Note, I'm not calling it a 'home-and-home' series, as I look at it just from one fan's perspective, mine! So why not LSSU? They are only four hours away.

Anyone going to Madison??

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Cool. I'll likely shoot him off a quick email.

If attendance continues to be off by 20% on Saturdays, everyone on this board is going to hear about it, as well as Dr. Eisler.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Makes more sense to be consistent, so there's no confusion. Everyone knows what time the games are! That time should be 7:30, so those that work have time to go home and eat or go out to eat (Shuberg's is really slow, but has good food). I assume most people get off work around 5 PM, especially Fridays.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

We're on the same wavelength.

I'm more of a 7PM fan, but I'm not going say a word over 30 minutes.

Besides, I still remember our "WHAT TIME DOES THE GAME START?!??!?" chant. :D

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

That is very cool. When I went to Ferris, it seemed like nobody know about this site. I guess the word is out.

As far as the game times are concerned, I have still not heard anything resembling a legitimate reason to continue this nonsense. "some people like it and some people don't" does not work for me. You could apply that logic to any decision ever made. ever.

Well, so far, the some people that don't like it aren't going to the games on Saturday evenings. When the same team is in town for both Friday and Saturday night, attendance is off exactly 20% (1,505 avg. vs 1,204) on Saturday. As I have said before, I do not believe that this is a coincidence. And no, I don't think that it has anything to do with the weak schedule we had early on.

Now, then. I do expect attendance to pick up on both nights the rest of the way, given this team's performance so far this season. However, I do believe that this will be due solely to the fact that this team is 13-3-2, and not because of a 5 PM start.

I'm not signing up, but I'm guessing that there is a comment section in the online version of the Pioneer, and it's also my guess that my quotes (and my intelligence) are probably being taken apart like a rusty '78 Datsun.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

It's obvious that others are reading this site, and this thread, so I might as well address this here and now. As for quoting anything I have to say here for a newspaper, here is my position:

Go for it. Help yourself. I said it, it came from my keyboard. I'll wear it. All I ask is that you keep it in a reasonable context, and we're fine. I'm stunned that a knucklehead like me gets quoted in a newspaper, but that's something I'll have to deal with.

They have to do the home and homes in cluster pairs. Example - Michigan and Michigan State. They couldn't do it with one and not the other because it would make for an uneven number of home and away CCHA games. They can do it with Western because they always play them four times. If they went to a home and home with Lake State, they would also have to do it with Northern. That's why they are saying Notre Dame and Bowling Green, because they are paired together. BG is kind of pushing it from Big Rapids for a home and home, but I'm sure they'd take it to get Notre Dame to Big Rapids each year instead of just every other.

Get off your high horse. It's not like it was a major publication, just a local rag of a small time publication that has a very miniscule distribution list. That being said, congratulations (just don't let it go to your head). You're still nothing outside of Big Rapids.:p
