Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

It's my understanding that the last component, record vs. TUC's, is not used until both teams in any comparison get to 10 games vs. TUC's. A quick reminder, TUC stands for Teams Under Consideration, meaning a team that is in the top 25 in the RPI. Right now, Ferris has played 6 games against such teams, and are 2-2-2. We've got to play 4 more, so at least until after the Notre Dame series.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Looking ahead a little bit, Notre Dame and Michigan are #26-27 in the RPI. It's becoming more and more apparent that we are going to need to get at least a split out of both of those series. If we get swept by either of them, they're going to jump into the top 25 in the RPI, and thus be a TUC. That would put 2 losses in our record against TUC's, and would really hurt us in terms of head-to-head.

If we sweep either team, we need to become big fans of both schools the rest of the way, to make sure they get into the top 25 of the RPI, so that we can pick up those 2 wins against TUC's, as well as the head-to-heads.

The Yale and potentially Wisconsin games are going to be big for PWR, no matter what. But January is getting more and more important, and more and more interesting.

Did we go from #4 to #3 in PWR because of UNO's tie and win over Minnesota State?

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

I'm not sure. I don't dig enough into the RPI, and I didn't look too closely at what the numbers looked like right before this weekend. If I had to guess, I'd say that was what did it, because MSU-Mankato is now a TUC, and currently Bemidji loses that comparison.

If I had to guess, we're pretty soft at #3 at the moment. There's a couple comparisons that would likely swing against us once we get to 10 games vs. TUCs. That's why it's so important to do well over the next 8 games. We could really solidify ourselves as a top 5 PWR, or we could fall like a rock.

As a wise man once said, Just Win Baby. Keep on winning, and you'll find yourself where you want to be at the end of the year.

I could be wrong, but TUC isn't RPI ranking it is top 25 in the PWR. Thats how I understand it atleast. Regardless nice to see two CCHA teams at #1 seeds right now :D. Didn't look at your PWR comparrison but we have 12 games against TUC's and thats because Michigan and Notre dropped out as TUC's. Its a great stat to me because WCHA fans gloat that they have the most and we got more than them :D .

All this means is the weekend in Big Rapids January 15-16 is a HUGE serious for both Ferris and Miami on many levels.

Incorrect. From the bottom of USCHO's PWR page:

The PWR compares the top 25 teams in the RPI Ratings Percentage Index (RPI), judging them by four criteria: record against common opponents, head-to-head competition, record against other top 25 teams if the team has faced at least 10 top 25 opponents, and the RPI.

They only put the top 25 teams in RPI in the PWR to start with.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Long time reader, first time poster. My thoughts on the 1st half of the season.

-First of all, shocked at the record, ranking, etc. It's a great feeling.

-I love the way Wysopal plays. Doesn't seem to be talked about much, but he was a great addition to this team.

-I really wonder if the Riley/Chupp/Haines line can keep it going all season.

-Starting the season I was really hoping either Nagle, or Nelson would step up and become full time starter, because I've never been a fan of 2 goalie systems (ex - Nagle/O'Keefe) but I've changed my mind on that. I think this system is working great, and it seems like it is a healthy competition that raises both of their games.

-Love the freshmen class. Kirzinger can fly, Alexander bleeds potential, Ouellette looks very promising, and Bonis really works out hard out there.

-My expectations have raised a lot for this team, but I'm still holding back a little bit to see how these next 8 games go. It's a brutal run, but confident they can survive.

I completely agree with you. You cannot overstate his importance to this team. Having 3 elite defensemen in Wysopal, Redmond, and Wietecha allows the team to almost always have an elite defenseman on the ice which also does wonders for the psyche of the goalie. Without him, they would be very vulnerable for over half the game and the goalie would be well aware of that.

And to think...there's not a senior among them. I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

Why did he transfer anyway?

That's pretty high praise.. "elite". Are any of these guys up for all-American honors??

Maybe they aren't elite and everything is just coming together as a unit. That is definitely a possibility. Maybe if you put them on another team, they would just be average. But let the numbers do the talking. defensively they have been nothing short of great; and i don't go throwing those words around. They are the core players for one of the best defenses in the country. Could they be this successful if they were just above average. I suppose it could happen if they had great chemistry and a successful scheme and maybe that's what it is. But from what I can tell, elite is an appropriate word for those 3 players. Not to mention what they have been able to do on the offensive end of the ice.

For a Ferris State hockey player to be named all-American is more difficult than if he plays for a bigger school with greater tradition. The numbers these guys are putting up offensively and defensively would warrant major consideration if they played for a larger school. But if you play for a small school with very little winning tradition, you almost have to have astronomical numbers. However, if they continue on the current pace, i'm sure Redmond would get a serious look.
