Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

No worries.

Mr. Beckwith's broadcasts really started to stick out (and not in a good way) when I bought the B2 feeds last year and was able to match up his PBP with what I actually saw on the ice. As we've established, I was not exactly blown away.

This kid's okay. I think he's an upgrade from his predecessor, but he's got things to work on. He seems like he's trying to talk too fast, as the words will stumble out of his mouth from time to time. He just needs more games and he'll likely get a lot better.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

The kid just did a helluva job by starting to educate his audience about the PWR.

Much better goal call than earlier this season, too. :D

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Nice win for the Bulldogs tonight (3-0), and congrats to Nagle for posting the shut out. Hope they stay up and motivated and get the sweep tomorrow night!

That is the truth! When it was the Miami (Ohio) game and he went crazy it was more like he was a fan then a professional. I know he was excited about the shoot-out win but you still have to do your job first and be a fan second. Glad to see he is starting to understand that.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Oh, you should have heard him the first couple games. I thought Brazil scored to win the World Cup. I had to shoot him an email and tell him to tone it down a bit. If it sounds like it came from soccer, you don't want it in your broadcast.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

After Nelson earned the shuout last week, you had to figure Nagel would want his too. This is the 11th game this season that Ferris has allowed less than 2 goals. Those kind of stats take the pressure off the offense. Just to know that 2 goals will likely win the game can really loosen up a team. This defense seems to be special. Amazing things can happen when you have a great defense.

Happy we won.Was it just me or was that a bad game to watch. It looked like we played down to their level . We have played better and need to play much better against teams we know we should beat.Haines ,Riley HMMM Seniors.Go Dawgs

I was thinking the exact same thing bigbadwolf. I can't help but wonder if the seniors decided they needed to step up during that 2nd intermission! Hopefully tomorrow night we will come out and "go for the throat" and not make it an interesting game.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Halfway point.

They did the smart thing by losing to Wilfred Laurier in the preseason exhibition which allowed them to skate under the radar and set the bar very low for the season.

All sarcasm aside: Ferris continues to improve as the season progresses. They have one of the most potent offenses in the nation and one of the most stingy defenses. They have logged the most penalty minutes but have one of the best penalty kill units in the nation. Most importantly, IMO, is that they have not let success get in the way of the job at hand. They seem to be very prepared for every battle. They have created a nice cushion inside that top 4 which will allow some stumbling in the very difficult 2nd half of the season. Well done boys.

1st half grade: A

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Ferris came out hot but then looked like they played down to Western again. They got that cushion and then seemed to be content with it. Granted, Nelson let in a few uncharacteristic easy goals that should have never went in.

Going into the break, I'm impressed. Numbers don't lie. However, Ferris has a very difficult upcoming schedule. It's going to be a great second half to the season :)

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

I agree with the sentiments from both of you.

The evaluation period is over. You remember, the four weeks that I said that we needed to play .500 or better to not bury ourselves before the schedule got tougher. Well, we didn't go 4-4 like I had hoped. Nope. We went and blew everyone's expectations out of the water by coming home 6-0-2. I'm pleased, amazed, thrilled, happy. Any of them will suffice.

18 games don't make a season, let alone a program. However, we've got a pretty good team this season. Take a look at the PWR tonight. I dare you. It's a little too early for that yet, but that gives you the best idea of where we're at right now.

This never fails to bite me in the butt, but I'm going to go ahead and do this anyway. Expectations are being raised. In the past, a trip to the Joe was the goal. This season, I expect it. If we finish in the top 4 of the league, and advance to the Joe, we'll be playing that weekend to secure a NCAA tournament bid, because one win at the Joe will do just that.

Like I said above, we've got a good team. We're going to find out just how good over the next 8 games. The tournament out in Madison now has HUGE PWR implications. A win over Yale puts us in nice position to take any PWR comparisons over an ECAC team, and beating Wisconsin is going to help in a big way with the WCHA teams, in both the Common Opponents and the Record against TUC's.

After that we've got Notre Dame, Michigan and Miami. And if you don't think that Michigan will get their act together soon, you need to have your head examined. They've made the NCAA's for 19 straight years. You don't do that by accident, and these guys just didn't forget how to play hockey this past offseason. Same with Notre Dame, or any team coached by Jeff Jackson, for that matter. We haven't swept Michigan since October 18-19, 1985. Yes, you read that correctly, and there's a reason for that. Miami sits at the top of both the CCHA and the PWR. If we run the table and go 6-0 here, we will win the CCHA and likely be looking at a #1 seed in the tourney, and I will drink myself silly in the basement of the Joe, like I did 7 years ago. 2-4 or better and we've got a really good look at a top-4 finish in the league and a 1st round CCHA tournament bye, and a better-than-average chance at a NCAA tourney invite.

We've found out that we're good. The next 8 games are going to tell the story of this season.

Understatement, as odd as that sounds. Nice to have a great goalie tandem isn't it? Very good first half up there in Big Rapids, undefeated at home, and stole some points in Oxford. Hope we can return the favor next time. Just looked at the schedule, that second half is a hell of a stretch. ND and Michigan are both down, but obviously teams that are very well coached and have loads of talent, so they won't be cakewalks. Only thing that I've noticed is, you still don't have a win yet this season against a team that is above .500 right now. We'll see if you guys can keep it up, nice to have some fresh competition at the top again. I remember being an undergrad in Oxford when you guys took home the CCHA banner in the early decade.

That's why this upcoming stretch for Ferris will show a lot. Let's be honest, they haven't had a very difficult schedule in the first half of the season. But for the most part, they have been beating up on the bad teams. Yes, it is D1 hockey and anyone is capable of winning on any night. A few bad bounces or bad calls and an opposing team who plays a full 60 strong minutes can lose you a game.

I think if Ferris comes out of the Michigan series at .500, they will be sitting in a good position. 4-4 for the next 8 games would not be the end of the world. I would like to see 6-2 or even 5-3 because I really do think Ferris is capable of winning the holiday tournament and at least splitting with both Notre Dame and Michigan. Miami is playing real well right now, but they are going to come into a hornets nest in Big Rapids. It's the first home game back from break and I would hope that the student body and community is aware of the implications of that series and come out to support the team.

For the sake of all Ferris fans, let's hope they don't lay us a turd in the second half of the season. Like Hammer said, they have raised the expectations, and by now, teams know that this team isn't just getting lucky anymore.

EDIT: Just noticed Ferris is #4 in the PWR. Nice.

The building was PACKED last night, attendance said 1,900+ in a 2,500 seat arena, I don't think there is any way there could have been 600 more seated people. Anyway, a packed building is good for the Bulldogs, and they deserve it.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

Yeah there was 1,970 in attendance last night, but just an FYI... a bunch of youth hockey teams and parents were in attendance that probably wouldn't have been then there without being around Ferris for the hockey tournament this weekend. It was a great turnout, but that had a lot to do with it.

Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing

We could up until yesterday (Saturday) morning. But that is HUGE for the Bulldogs to get Detroit News Coverage.

Thanks for sharing.
