Re: Ferris State Hockey 2009-10 - 2 minutes for slashing
I agree with the sentiments from both of you.
The evaluation period is over. You remember, the four weeks that I said that we needed to play .500 or better to not bury ourselves before the schedule got tougher. Well, we didn't go 4-4 like I had hoped. Nope. We went and blew everyone's expectations out of the water by coming home 6-0-2. I'm pleased, amazed, thrilled, happy. Any of them will suffice.
18 games don't make a season, let alone a program. However, we've got a pretty good team this season. Take a look at the PWR tonight. I dare you. It's a little too early for that yet, but that gives you the best idea of where we're at right now.
This never fails to bite me in the butt, but I'm going to go ahead and do this anyway. Expectations are being raised. In the past, a trip to the Joe was the goal. This season, I expect it. If we finish in the top 4 of the league, and advance to the Joe, we'll be playing that weekend to secure a NCAA tournament bid, because one win at the Joe will do just that.
Like I said above, we've got a good team. We're going to find out just how good over the next 8 games. The tournament out in Madison now has HUGE PWR implications. A win over Yale puts us in nice position to take any PWR comparisons over an ECAC team, and beating Wisconsin is going to help in a big way with the WCHA teams, in both the Common Opponents and the Record against TUC's.
After that we've got Notre Dame, Michigan and Miami. And if you don't think that Michigan will get their act together soon, you need to have your head examined. They've made the NCAA's for 19 straight years. You don't do that by accident, and these guys just didn't forget how to play hockey this past offseason. Same with Notre Dame, or any team coached by Jeff Jackson, for that matter. We haven't swept Michigan since October 18-19, 1985. Yes, you read that correctly, and there's a reason for that. Miami sits at the top of both the CCHA and the PWR. If we run the table and go 6-0 here, we will win the CCHA and likely be looking at a #1 seed in the tourney, and I will drink myself silly in the basement of the Joe, like I did 7 years ago. 2-4 or better and we've got a really good look at a top-4 finish in the league and a 1st round CCHA tournament bye, and a better-than-average chance at a NCAA tourney invite.
We've found out that we're good. The next 8 games are going to tell the story of this season.
