Fear Not America, Janet Napolitano Is On The Job

The Secretary of Homeland Security says she thinks the "system worked" in that near disaster terror attack over Detroit. Evidently Napolitano thinks it's part of "the system" to allow a terror bomber and his weapon onto an airplane and then give him ample opportunity to detonate the thing.

She also evidently believes passengers are an integral part of "the system," since that young Dutch dude was on our boy like stink on chit, and she specifically pointed to his actions as part of the success of "the system."

Is this woman crazy? Just how stupid does she think we are? Most of us, I believe, would have pronounced this incident a success of "the system" if we had followed up on his father's report and maybe banned this guy from flights into the US. Failing that, we might be able to point to a success of "the system" if we'd intercepted this dude at the airport and prevented him from boarding.

As it was, he came within an inch of blowing a jetliner from the sky and killing hundreds of people--NO THANKS WHATSOEVER TO "THE SYSTEM!"

Janet Napolitano should be fired: instantly, publicly and humiliatingly.

Come on, she made it so you can't go pee in the last hour of the flight. You can't get a pillow from the overhead. Thats sure to stop any terrorist

Every time we pee ourselves over some whackjob, they score another victory.

I read that the TSA is advising against carrying on luggage to prevent delays in security checks now. I hope the TSA is going to pony up and pay the extra $100+ per trip I take if I'm going to listen to them. Definitely helps to beef up checks on carry on luggage when the arseclown tried to detonate a device that was attached to his body as well

I know nothing about this woman, but if anyone in a national security role points out a common citizen as part of the "system" they need to be fired and ridiculed.

Kind of, but not really.

It's definitely a bad idea to beef up security on all fronts after such a close call, isn't it?

If flying is so vital to your livelihood, you should be thankful your government is taking such steps to keep you safe. If you're just whining about an upcoming vacation, you should shut up and suck it up. :)

Stop being a whiner.

I think you're reading too much into the comment, "the system worked". It was nothing more than typical pap from an administration trying to allay fears about what this attempt means on a grander scale. I seriously doubt that significant thought and investigation isn't being put into why this guy bypassed security and what needs to be done to prevent it from happening again, despite what official statements have been made. Never mind Napolitano isn't the end all be all of airport security for the entire planet.

Its a typical bureaucratic maneuver to prevent people from being fired and from changing the desired status quo within the system. Lets face it, the comment was a grand lie if you consider the entire issue to be one of death prevention.... on the other hand if you consider it from the perspective of (political) damage mitigation it went perfectly as everybody on the ground did as instructed. If this underwear bomb worked as intended would we be saying "the system worked"? The system only worked here was because some Yemeni bomb builder made a slight construction error.

I think you're giving the benefit of the doubt to an incompetent. It wasn't a remark, it was her official response, on a national network to the events in Detroit. Those events involved colossal failures, on both sides of the ocean. And it was only blind luck that prevented a catastrophe.

As a cabinet secretary Napolitano should have two public reactions: anger and determination. Anger that it happened. And determination that it won't happen again. She showed neither. The American people may have an unhealthy affection for professional wrestling, but they are not so stupid as to believe what happened here was a "success."

Certainly the professionals will do what they can to identify the mistakes and try to prevent their recurrance. However, Napolitano is Secretary of Homeland Defense, not some pencil pusher in DOD. As such, she is responsible. I can only conclude your defense of her nitwit performance derives less from an analysis of that performance than from a desire not to be critical of the President Obama or any of the little Obamas. Not necessarily a bad idea, but people's lives are on the line here. And several hundred of them came within an instant of being murdered. Under no definition of the phrase did these events represent the "system working."

I'm with ya brother. I think it is a travelsmockery that the airlines (except SWA) are trying to profit from the TSA restrictions. I'm too lazy to take crap out of my toiletries bag to not check my bag. Cost me an extra $40.00 last trip two weeks ago.

That has nothing to do with my opinion on the TSA. I'm willing to submit to a full cavity search as long as Catherine Zeta-Jones is doing it. And so much for the new technology, i.e. the full x-ray or "puffer" equipment that apparently isn't working due to some "malfunctions" and have been pulled from most major airports.

The latest gags about not walking the cabin and pulling personal effects an hour before descent are like urinating in the ocean. We're still viewed as reactionary buffoons flailing at anything. Besides, if you are like me, you keep personal items in the space below the seat- i.e. iPod, headphones, Garmin, snacks, etc. Just as well enforce a no carry on policy and be done with it. More liability to worry about for the airlines- personal items being stolen from checked bags.

Still won't stop terrorist attempts, especially from foreign destinations. I view this as the same movement to ban guns from the public. The bad guys will still have them, though.

Bin Laden is brilliant. He may not have achieved a strong political /religious message on a high holiday, but he inflicted more economic damage to the airlines and to our economy.

Didn't the plane originate in Amsterdam? How is anything the TSA does going to affect them?

I don't know who's responsible for the security lines on departing international flights, but I'd guess it'd still be the local country, which in this case would be Dutch workers.

Flying's about to become more invasive than being arrested. Proof that truth is stranger than fiction.

Fwiw, I flew out of LAX yesterday afternoon and security was a breeze. Only difference between yesterday and what I've become accustomed to was a table set up at the gate. As we were boarding a couple of TSA freedom fighters picked 6-8 people randomly and took a look in their bags.

Anectdotal, of course, but the differences were negligible. In fact, I think I got through security at LAX yesterday faster than I ever have before...and I've been through there dozens of times.

Despite being reported to the US embassy, our boy was NOT placed on the no fly list and was able to hop aboard without problem. That's our responsibility, an American flagged carrier. He also had in possesion a US entry visa which permitted multiple entries. The Brits had refused to give him a visa.

Janet does a 180 on her analysis of the "success" of the Detroit incident. Looks like the boss got on the blower from Hawaii and asked her the equivalent of: "are you out of your freakin' mind?"

yeah, its not like we have a government that could enforce standards for incoming flights anyhow.

BTW, there is a difference between realizing that the system failed and appropriating blame because of it. It would have been sufficient for Ms. Napolitano to admit that there is a hole and that they will work with the authorities of other gov'ts to amend that hole... or else refuse entry to those flights.

You know, considering I'm more likely to die by having a vending machine fall on me than in a terrorist attack, I'll take the risk if it means I don't need to be strip searched every time I fly.

I'm not a violent felon, the only mark on my record is a single speeding ticket; I really get annoyed being treated like one at the airport. And no, just because I have nothing to hide doesn't make it ok.

Cripes, the security hounds are worse than soccer moms.
