Elmira possibly moving to First Arena?

Re: Elmira possibly moving to First Arena?

I doubt very much that the Arena could beat the current deal that the College has with the State.

Don't you think the College might get off their almighty rich snobby horses ***es and see what an opportunity presents itself even if it might cost a little more? The Domes are out in the middle of nowhere. Does the college even run bussing up there aside from for the players? I know the county busses don't go out there. I guess it would be something they should survey the student body with. "Would you go to games at the Downtown Arena close by the school if you knew you could walk and then walk to bars after and then walk back to campus at nights end?"

Here we go again, the "Off Campus" excuse. Without spending much time investigating, I came up with other programs who do not have "On Campus Rinks" in the ECAC-W along you can add Manhattanville, Hobart, Utica, Nazareth, Nuemann, in other words, every one of them and all have strong programs. I'm sure there are others in DIII somewhere.

In the West: SNC, CSS, Stout, Eau Claire, Lawrence, Marian, Northland, St. Thomas, Concordia Wi and Mn, Hamline, St. Johns.

Re: Elmira possibly moving to First Arena?

The point is not that the rink is off campus, it's that the rink is old and not fan friendly. It would be a good opportunity for EC to play downtown in a newer rink. Look what Oswego's program has done since they built their new rink. People in Elmira need to wake up and realize that a little change would be good for the program.

Not the rink hasn't helped but look at the roster from 1998-1999 and compare it to 2002-2003 and on......one HUGE difference. It was more then just a rink that's helped OSU.

Re: Elmira possibly moving to First Arena?

Seriously, I see no need to discuss this topic until, (if it ever does happen) an announcement is made by the College itself, that they will move the hockey program to First Arena. The College is quite happy where they are right now. I do agree though that they should do some more upgrades such as checking the possibility of re-painting the roof interior to brighten it up, add some heat ducting, possibly put in a (fake) ceiling such as a tarp type material to help with heat loss.
There has to be much more energy friendly lighting that would also make it brighter in there, not sure how it would affect the players on the ice though. This topic will always be a sensitive one, I prefer the Domes ( not just because it's closer to my home ) but will go where ever the team goes, if they ever do.

Good Luck EC in the Platty Tourney this weekend!

Re: Elmira possibly moving to First Arena?

This is the problem. The College is happy with the teams playing at the Domes because from what I hear it is cheap, but there are a lot of people that aren't happy. When you have an arena that is almost empty and seats 3,200, you need to look at a new venue. Not to mention all the improvements that need to take place. I want the EC Men's team to win a national championship just as bad if not more than the next person, but it will not happen while their home is in Pine Valley.

Re: Elmira possibly moving to First Arena?

I agree. Its time to make the natural change to the First Arena, and work out the financial issues with the powers that be. Its a different economy today then it was for both entities even a decade ago. Put aside the differences, and make it work. Arenas, and stadiums become outdated after a period of years, and theres no doubt the Domes have been a great home venue for 4 decades, but its time to make the natural change to First Arena which will be an improvement in every area of concern that the Domes presents in 2012.

Not to mention you'd probably draw a lot better crowd if the Jackals aren't around.

Look at Utica...sure it took a couple years to get the townspeople to come out, now they draw 3000 plus to every game. There is no way you'll convince me after a year or two of EC hockey being the only show in town again and playing at the First Arena that they would't get atleast 2000-2500 to every game.

Re: Elmira possibly moving to First Arena?

The domes vs First has nothing to do with a National Championship:rolleyes:
Just what the program needs, all those beer sucking, uneducated Jackals fans who were left out when the Jackals Move(ed) out of town.

Kids want atmosphere/fans. You show them a packed First Arena I can't imagine kids wouldn't be sold to want to play in front of that crowd every night.

Having been at Oswego and Norwich, I can tell you it matters having talked to players while I've been at most places. Who wouldn't want to play in front of a 1,000 crazed students every night in arguably the best D-III rink in the country at Oswego?

Prez, I understand the "1000 crazed students" heck, we've had some good turn outs at the Domes the last few years although not consistent. It's the "typical Jackals fan" I'm afraid of, we do not need the fans that ONLY come for the beer and to socialize. I admit, the First is a nice arena, been to every EC game held there and would go there if in fact they do move, however, I get tired of the lame excuse of "wanting them to move so they can win a National Championship" Those of us who have been around for a while remember the Finals vs Wisconsin River Falls and the teams thereafter. The Domes were over capacity back then and will be IF they can get it all together, starting at the top down, They've had the talent, maybe they need................................. not going there.

I think it is a plus to recruiting players if you can show them the kind of crowd they will be playing in front of. Kid comes in on a tour gets to see the facility, take in a game, see the fan support at say, Krietzberg. The he gets the same tour of the facilities at Elmira. Where will he want to go if all other considerations are equal?

Point made;) However, I do not see the College having too much concern about those points. As much as it has it's "logical" points, there are certain facts that play a major roll whether we like it or not. The Domes are owned by NYS, they are an Emergency Evacuation Center, the State needs to keep them well maintained and ready for any emergency that may happen. Having the College as the sole tenants doing all the maintenance is a huge plus for them and I'm sure they will make it a deal the College will not/cannot afford to ignore. I, like many others just wish the best for the team, whatever it turns out to be, but! don't forget the Fans!!

Did Dr. Maier retire at the end of last year or is that the end of this year he is retiring?

Not many drink beer as you think. At $7.50 a pop for stale beer it's not even worth it. Plus from what i understand college athletics don't have to serve alcohol and often don't. They don't at EC Games from what I remember. When the Frozen Four came here mooms ago I don't believe alcohol was served. The uneducated aren't even Jackals fans, they are the weirdos from Pennsyltucky who look out of their league and always somehow get free tickets then get wasted. Doubt those kind would come to EC Games. Plus you aren't counting the number of potential students who miht come who aren't now.

Whats wrong with going to socialize? Thats what I did every intermission. I rarely socialized during the game but I admit on top of going to the game and taking in a game the people I saw were the best part. I have a far bigger issue with the alcohol drinkers and the wild children who aren't controlled. People socializing don't bother me.
