ECAC Playoff 2012 thread

Re: ECAC Playoff 2012 thread

If you can't read/understand, then say so- site case in point, people. Don't appreciate slurs (Dave, Brooky).

I never have seen them leave it, etc., as I said. Rocky example is apt. Can nitpick around edges but my point is I think quite clear.

And not, "ridiculous". I just have never seen them seem to go, 'all in'. Does not characterize Crimson women's hockey I do not think. Are you suggesting it does?
And I am welcome to my view whether it matches other's view or no.

Irritated.
I can read, but as I noted, am not sure I understand your intended points or meaning at times. Merely an honest admission. I'm not sure that's due to an inability to read.

Dave did cite all examples of Harvard NCAA games I had in mind to support my alternative opinion regarding the belief H does not...or has not left it all on the ice. Not to say that includes every game they've ever played. Dave is right IMO...about every team failing the all in, complete, nothing left effort at times.

I realized when I stated my opposing point of view that you may not have seen those NCAA games by Harvard on which my comments were based. Perhaps you did and still feel they didn't go all in with their absolute maximum effort...I don't know which is the case. It's simply my view that Harvard has left it all on the ice in many NCAA tournament games. Even to the degree depicted by the character Rocky in the movies...albeit, with a little less bloodshed.

There were no slurs intended. No offense intended, I understand the point of the Rocky analogy but for me that analogy is a little comical utilized as a comparative measurement or gauge of effort, and or heart of a real team competing in a NCAA varsity sport. I can't help it...I chuckled.

Re: ECAC Playoff 2012 thread

papulaisle - I appreciate your views and I regret offending you, and I did like a lot of what you had to say there in your post.

I would be interested in having a civil discussion about what you mean by Crimson women's hockey never going "all in." Sure it's your opinion, but I do think it's insulting to some past Harvard teams and not borne out by the evidence as far as I can tell, and if you have an opinion that's insulting to others without some reasonable evidence to back it up, then I don't appreciate it. But I would be interested to know where you're coming from. Maybe I'm off base.

At least from my perspective, I've seen the 2003 Harvard team play UMD to double overtime, the 2005 Harvard have a really dramatic second half turnaround, beat Mercyhurst in triple overtime, and play a heavily favored Minnesota team even to the final minute of play, and then the 2007 Harvard team played BC to triple overtime, and played Wisconsin to quadruple overtime.

In my mind, all of the above are examples of really inspiring Harvard teams that went "all in" and Harvard participated in some of the most dramatic games in NCAA history during that 2003-2007 (not coincidentally, the span of Julie Chu's career). While yes, I do agree there are examples of Harvard teams that didn't give their best effort, like the 2000/2003/2011 teams that lost to Dartmouth, so certainly Harvard has no always gone "all in" but who has a perfect record in that regard? (Well, Mark Johnson's teams are pretty darn close ;) ) So I'm just confused as to how you could say Harvard is a program whose players NEVER go "all in" and would like to know where you're coming from.

I'll go one better and ask "Where was Dartmouth in '08, '07, '06, '05, '04 and '03? Have they ever played in an NCAA Frozen Four championship game? Answer: NO. You can ask the same question of Dartmouth being 'all in' as you can with Harvard except I won't go there because I don't think it is fair to the players or coaches.

Look, I've been critical of the Crimson's efforts in the post season and out of conference games since '08. We have not had a good record and submitted some real stinkers (Dartmouth last year, Cornell in the NCAA quarters the year before). It has been a source of frustration. But to say that the Crimson don't show up as a blanket statement is simply ludicrous and doesn't take into account the period between '99 and '08 where Dave has indicated several games that were extraordinary efforts by the team. Papulaisle can fire any volley he wants at Harvard; he just needs to be prepared to answer for his school's underwhelming record in the post season which is out there for everyone to see.

Re: ECAC Playoff 2012 thread

papulaisle, yeah, building on what Skate79 said, if you had made your Rocky comment in reference to the Harvard program 2008 onward, I would have little room to disagree with you.

Touché!

I hadn't seen Conan. He funny.
I just now watched MOST of it.

He did his homework (Is President Kim immediately behind him to his left...)

I KNEW Flounder, Otter, say. So I can relate to comments re Animal House- etc. Chris Miller- who co-wrote A H was two classes behind me.

I wouldn't go to AD Phi- the frat immortalized as, "Delta House", in the movie (was there a book?) Chickens lived downstairs in the furnace room. Adjacent to where the bar was then (I...was born and raised in tony Fairfield County, accepted at Yale, Sir.)

Much more, perhaps, but much is fiction.

But, then again, at my fraternity, we still wore jackets & ties and 'smooth' music (alas) prevailed over rock and roll (until my senior year)!

AND/BUT the brothers at AD were some of the very best, most able, most personable and well liked even of all people graduating from the college- doctors, lawyers, otherwise leaders now. One, MY attorney roomate in NYC, subsequently.

Hear you, Dave. I also want to indicate that I was, perhaps, hast... was quick ...needed to refle...

Umm.
I want to say...

Let's see, to err is human!

You, Dave, site some hard to refute facts- four overtimes. Oh my! THOSE players who participated in such might feel some irritated with Pap's comments (as to never going, all-in).

I will think about it.
I am STRONGLY partisan.

I could say (partisan-ship) got the better of me- but let me not too quickly discount my own intuition. It HAS been my feeling that the Crimson has skated...
Well, I won't rehash.

And, Brooky- my partisan-'ship' may have struck a reef here and an apolo...
If I were too... Maybe I was a little too quic...
Were a mistak...

I hadn't seen ALL the posts when I sent above along.

So...thinking.

Seems I have some agreement in, recent times.

Any word on VIDEO yet? gocrimson.com has set up a "Video" link to the Cornell video home page, but as yet they don't list either semi or the final as an upcoming live event. Just lots of upcoming live men's and women's lacrosse (box lacrosse?)

The Cornell release noted that the games would be available on RedCast.

ECAC Quarterfinal Playoff 2012 thread Which May be the, 'Semi's'?

ECAC Quarterfinal Playoff 2012 thread Which May be the, 'Semi's'?

Withdraw now and be brief as to important/great games tonight.

DID think (Dave, Brooky, Skate...)...however-

And my pique stems, it seems, in part from resentment that teams away from news centers fare less well at awards time- across the board, regarding accolades, choices at awards time, etc., than those- especially Crimson, locally situated.

POINT: If you as a player see recognition coming to your team seemingly 'automatically' such as may sometimes be the case at Harvard (as above)- you might not feel the need to go, all-in. Whereas, were you in Potsdam, Canton, Hanover, Hamilton- central NY and perhaps, as well, Troy, etc., and, see, sense the reverse (and Brown seems a 'special' situation with Providence and Brown's recent history), a resentment could build up and cause you as a player, in order to catch the media eye, to go all-in.

THUS a disparity in play, though subtle, might be discerned between the two efforts by a sensitive observer.

Happy with ECAC awards.

Yet, didn't think Dempsey, for instance, deserved to be one of three ECAC Player Of The Year 2012 nominees. A second Cornell athlete would have been IMHO a better choice.

There would be one of what I am talking about, say.

Fault lands with media?

I doubt that many athletes are thinking about the media nor recognition when they take the ice at this time of year.

Go Big Red
How can you cheer against the "Q"? Cinderella must not be as big up in Canada. :(

Re: ECAC Quarterfinal Playoff 2012 thread Which May be the, 'Semi's'?

papulaise - coaches pick the awards, not the media, so Boston being more a media center has nothing to do with this.

I do think coaches like to "spread the wealth" for awards to spread media coverage, so that's one reason coaches might be more likely to produce three finalists from different schools rather than two finalists from the first-place team.

Dempsey was 4th in the ECAC in points scored and tied for first in goals scored on the league's second-place team, so it's not like it's an egregious pick.

I must be missing something again.

http://www.uscho.com/stats/conference/ecac-women/2011-2012/

While not following the ECAC as closely as the fan regulars in this thread, I don't see anything to indicate Dempsey isn't a completely legit contender among all other conference standouts for an ECAC recognition.

Apologies pap, you'd have a hard time convincing me players anticipate automatic recognitions based on their uniform, and that they'd to some / any degree, coast, or let that hypothetical expectation determine their effort. If a player...any player has had a clearly outstanding season I can see some expectation prior to awards but...

I don't think I'd "blame" anyone for a nod to Dempsey. As Dave mentions, I have seen pretty strong evidence of attempts to spread the recognitions in all conferences.

Connections to players on the two teams I'm cheering for. Besides, if they both win, I'll be at the final tomorrow, so a good reason to cheer. Non ?.

Re: ECAC Playoff 2012 thread

Dempsey is legit in more ways than you can count. She plays a two way game, on the PP and PK and plays more minutes than any other Harvard player save for Pucci. She is VERY DESERVING of a first team selection.

I find it laughable that Papulaisle is arguing that not being in a media center works against players. So I suppose that Ithaca is the Hub of the Universe? This has nothing to do with the media or big vs small locales as Dave pointed out. This is coaches picking players they see first hand every week. Cornell players were overwhelming choices because they dominated the league. Dartmouth had three players selected including one who tied for Best Defensive Forward. I have no problem with any of the choices especially since I didn't see all of these players consistently throughout the season with the exception of the Crimson.

I was going to end this post with a little more vitriol but I'll refrain because it is pointless. The shots at the Crimson are getting old and lame and I sincerely wish we could put this to bed and move on.

How can you cheer against the "Q"? Cinderella must not be as big up in Canada. :(

Calling them Cinderella is pushing it a bit, considering most pundits had the Q finishing 2nd or 3rd in their pre-season predictions. They ended up having an inconsistent seaason, underachieving at times. While the big red will be the heavy favorites, the Q will not be easy out. If you really boil down the ECAC to simple math, you have Cornell, followed by a pack of contenders all fairly evenly matched. This led to a great late season shuffling contest between five teams for playoff positions. Three of those five teams survived to get a crack at the ECAC trophy this weekend.

Puck drops in about an hour. :)

Re: ECAC Playoff 2012 thread

American anthem is playing and the puck is about to drop in the first semi-final game featuring Cornell vs. Quinnipiac.
