ECAC Playoff 2012 thread

Re: ECAC Playoff 2012 thread

Season over
No it isn't. The team is still 8th in the PWR. If neither SLU/UMD/BU/Providence win an autobid, then Harvard should earn an at-large. Harvard still has the selection edge over SLU at the moment. Harvard did win the season series 2-1 and that's what matters for NCAA selection.

4 years and counting of absolute choke jobs or not showing up
From my perspective, it's less disappointing than the 2008 Frozen Four or the playoff losses from 2009-2011. The team just wasn't that close to winning any of those games. At least this was one that could've gone either way.

Re: ECAC Playoff 2012 thread

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this the first time a team that was lower than a four-seed got to the conference finals? (Since the realignment following the split with the Hockey East teams). I also believe this was the first team a lower than five-seed team won a quarterfinal. Nice to see some parity, if only a little more than usual.

2009 was #4 Dartmouth defeating #6 RPI. Princeton was #3 that season. You're forgiven if you've blocked that series from memory. ;)

Okay but that's asking for a lot of variables to fall into place. Right now SLU and UMD look very good and while I don't think either will be favored, I wouldn't want to bet against them necessarily. I'm fairly confident that Providence won't win the HE tournament but I can't say the same for BU. Guess I'm going to be rooting for the Huskies and the Eagles today in Hyannis.

Disagree. I didn't expect Harvard to beat Wisconsin in '08. Agree that the playoff losses from '09 - '11 were much worse. Still I'm left to wonder why Harvard has failed to get out of the semis in five out of the last six years going back to '07. Something is going on with the program both from a talent and coaching perspective that prevents them from taking the next step. Not to take anything away from SLU because they have been white hot and deserve to be in today's championship game. But something clearly is amiss with the Crimson.

Sure it is asking a lot to fall in place. Look at my numbers in the Bracketology thread. I'm estimating Harvard still has a 25-43% chance of everything falling into place. It's not a great chance, less than a coin flip, but it's not like it's a pipe dream either.

Well Wisconsin was pretty mediocre that year and got destroyed in the NCAA final. At the very least, I was extremely disappointed that game wasn't closer and that team went from a first intermission lead to being out of the game in 5 minutes.

I think Katey's better than her peers at getting her teams ready day-in, day-out, and Harvard generally has fewer lousy games against the lower tier of the conference. That helps Harvard a lot when it comes to doing well in the ECAC standings, but not when it comes to the playoffs.

But yes, I think with better depth next year the team will be better suited to do well in the playoffs.

Re: ECAC Playoff 2012 thread

Continuing to harp peevishly about the ECAC's failure to schedule each team to finish playing a full 11-game round robin before embarking on a second 11-game round robin.... I 'm embarassed that H wins the H2H comparison with SLU on the basis of games played on November 19 and October 28, respectively. If I were SLU I'd be very ticked that the second regular season game couldn't have been played somewhere within the calendar month of, say, December, or January, or February.

Re: ECAC Playoff 2012 thread

SLU currently has a 1-0 lead over Cornell, despite being out shot 17-5. The Saint's goal came right after a Cornell penalty expired. Overall, Cornell is looking good, despite trailing after period 1.

Re: ECAC Playoff 2012 thread

Sabatine scores again - now 2-1 with less than 2 minutes left in game.
Mazzotta leaves the net - 6 attackers for Cornell. Bero scores, now 3-1 (empty net agoal)
new ECAC champions!!!

Re: ECAC Playoff 2012 thread

Great game by the Saints. Congrats on the win. McDonald was phenomenal. Simply amazing in net today. Hopefully, this gives the Big Red some extra motivation and perspective heading into the NCAA tournament.

I'll be satisfied with a 32-4 record for Cornell this season. :D
