ECAC Hockey Finales Will Not Be Televised

I didn't attend AC last year, so this will be my first go at it. My major issue with it is the location. I know I was spoiled from 2003-2010 with the tourney being 20 minutes from my garage, but the Albany location makes the most sense because it's the most centrally-located among all of the schools. The longest drive is an almost 4-hour jaunt from Canton, NY (SLU) and you could turn that into 3.5 hours easily. Atlantic City is 4.5 hours from Albany.

We'll see how it goes, but I think no matter what schools show up, attendance is always going to be difficult to maximize because the majority of the schools don't travel with large contingents. Cornell, Clarkson, RPI, SLU, & Colgate are the only schools that seem to generate a crowd wherever the tournament has been held.

Albany is a stretch for 3.5 hours by car from SLU. You really have to be pushing the speed limit a bit to do that. By bus? Forget it, atleast 4 hours.

Not sure that Colgate can be put in the teams that travel well for fans. If I had to pick a 5th team, maybe Union or Yale (atleast for ECACs.)

With Union's recent success, I'd have to agree. I didn't include them because there wasn't much of a history (none, in fact) until two years ago. Yale had a good showing in Bridgeport for the NCAAs last year, but they didn't seem to draw well the 2 years they were in Albany. Again, before that, I don't have much of a history on them. I mentioned Colgate only because I've seen them in Lake Placid and Albany, where I thought there was a decent contingent.

It's just that the Ivies (except for Cornell) don't seem to bring a crowd and with half the league consisting of said schools, it's going to be difficult to bring attendance up at any arena.

Given this information, why wouldn't the War Memorial in Syracuse be the best place to hold this tournament? It's easy travel for the schools we know will actually bring fans (the longest trip being for RPI - 2.5 hours, although it's going to be a bit longer for Yale now that they have an OK travelling presence given their recent success), it's a good sized arena for this sort of event (holds I think about 6000-7000), halfway decent local hockey support with the Crunch in town, and plenty to do around the city.

Re: ECAC Hockey Finales Will Not Be Televised

The only one from the league who ever talks is Stewart, and well, we know how well THAT went...
I think Ken said they were having some technical or video issues down in AC that Hagwell was attending to and thats the reason he wasnt available for the interview.

Re: ECAC Hockey Finales Will Not Be Televised

I guess we'll have the tournament locale discussion every year at this time, but bottom line it's the bottom line. $$$$$

Yale's crowd in AC last year was not that spectacular. The band was there so that made it look and sound like more people but I think the Lynah faithful outnumbered the Eli's by about 3 to 1.

but bottom line it's the bottom line. $$$$$
So true... and since the league isn't paying a dime to be in AC nothing will change until the current contract is up at the earliest.

Albany does make sense logistically, but the city, arena and league must do more to promote it.
Again, Cornell, RPI and Clarkson are the only three that generate any crowds. SLU and Union do not travel well. Yale has done well since they got good, but let's see if it that continues mow that they have slipped a bit.

Re: ECAC Hockey Finales Will Not Be Televised

I agree that the Albany location makes the most sense because of the location. The only issue I have is the arena is way too big. Now if the NYS high school basketball tournament moves to Syracuse in 2014 freeing up the GFCC, I think that could be an ideal location. Its only 45 mins north of Albany and easy to get to. The civic center holds about 4800 so the place should be filled close to capacity and also has some great sightlines. Theres plenty of things to do close by like shopping, an indoor waterpark, skiing, etc... and LP is only an hour and half away if your a fan of that area.

You make some good points. I think the GF capacity is closer to 4,500, but let's not quibble over 300 people. If they got 4,500 at any game the league would be happy. I hope that does happen, but I can't see the HS tournament in the dome. They don't sell out GF, except for the AA finals.

Interesting thought.

Video issues? Not only for a radio show, but THERE'S NO TV COVERAGE! (Except for RPI-TV...)

Not sure what you're saying with SLU not traveling well. I think it's pretty much agreed upon by most people that SLU DOES travel quite well. The years they made it to Albany they were quite well represented, especially for being 4 hours from the capital district.

SLU also has a pretty strong crowd on the road for the New England roadies. But what do I know, I only went to almost all the road games from Albany and Southeast from 08-11

Just listened to Ken's show again, I guess the video issues they were having are with the replay system for the games this weekend and thats the reason Hagwell wasnt able to talk on the radio this morning.

The segment about the championships start around 11:52, if you dont feel like listening to the Jeremy Welsh interview at the beginning of the show.
