ECAC D1 Women's Hockey 2014-15 Season

Re: ECAC D1 Women's Hockey 2014-15 Season

The Harvard loss gives the Quinnipiac women some breathing room in first place. This might be QU's year.

Re: ECAC D1 Women's Hockey 2014-15 Season

Maschmeyer is having a tough year.

One PPG, one ENG, and one beautiful feed to, and shot from, a streaking Illikainen, that no one, especially Harvard's D, saw coming. But yes, this can make for tough going.

Re: ECAC D1 Women's Hockey 2014-15 Season

Maschmeyer is having a tough year.

She had a .914 yesterday. Fry is struggling. Nothing like taking an interference penalty right after the opponent ties it up in the 3rd period! The Game Winner on a PP

Bear in mind, though, that she's playing all the tougher opponents -- #1 BC, #5 Quinnipiac (twice), #6 BU (twice),#8 StL, #9 Cornell, #10 Clarkson -- in other words, 8 of her 14 starts have been against top 10 opponents - plus Dartmouth (twice), Yale, UNH, RPI and Union. And her GA is 1.73 and her Save % is .928.

Just imagine what her statistics would be if she, rather than Harvard's other goalies, had also played against Union (twice), Colgate, RPI, UConn, Princeton (twice) and Northeastern!

Apology accepted? She's only faced 318 shots with 295 saves? There are a lot of netminders who have well over twice as many with just as good numbers! Look at the great team in front of her!! Situation overrated!!? :/

Still trying to figure out what weekly and monthly awards mean. There are many who have been awarded these honors with only the stats/numbers? So, if Harvard blows out two soft teams runs the numbers up and the goalie gets a donut that gets the award? Kinda like Quinni 12 or 13 shutouts, 5 or 6 with single digit shots on goal? I spoke with Hagwell regarding this and was told that 5 hey have tried several different methods but due to time and participation stats and numbers was the best but probably not accurate more for fun?

Re: ECAC D1 Women's Hockey 2014-15 Season

Here are the goaltending numbers for this season's ECAC goalies so far:

1 Chelsea Laden, Sr, Quinnipiac 17 12-3-2 1036:21 19 244 .928 1.10
2 Shea Tiley, Fr, Clarkson 17 12-3-2 989:04 22 352 .941 1.33
3 Emerance Maschmeyer, Jr, HU 10 7-2-1 588:33 15 208 .933 1.52
4 Paula Voorheis, So, Cornell 16 11-2-2 897:06 30 391 .929 2.00
5 Carmen MacDonald, Sr, SLU 13 7-4-2 702:03 26 271 .912 2.22
6 Kimberly Newell, Jr, Princeton 15 8-6-1 901:12 35 395 .919 2.33
7 Robyn Chemago, So, Dartmouth 17 7-8-2 1022:58 40 403 .910 2.34
8 Jaimie Leonoff, Sr, Yale 17 6-10-0 911:18 40 431 .915 2.63
9 Ashlynne Rando, Jr, Colgate 14 3-10-1 816:36 37 391 .914 2.71
10 Kelly O'Brien, Sr, Rensselaer 14 2-11-1 809:59 40 397 .908 2.96
11 Shenae Lundberg, Sr, Union 17 1-13-3 984:49 57 560 .908 3.47
12 Monica Elvin, So, Brown 16 2-11-0 799:06 57 444 .886 4.27

Going on Watson's argument that Mashmeyer only faces top competition, let's say she plays the cupcakes as well and give her seven more starts. She averages 25 saves per game over those additional games and garners two shutouts. The other five games she gives up a total of seven goals. That gives her 383 saves and 22 GA, better numbers than either of the goalies above her. But does it make her a better goalie necessarily? Not really because the competition isn't as tough. She doesn't get the benefit of playing the cupcakes so her stats don't look as impressive but it shouldn't diminish her accomplishments as a top flight goalie. Look, she has had her ups and downs (getting pulled from last year's quarters against Yale had to hurt) and she gives up a softie here and there but she has also made some ten bell saves against quality competition. You have to give her props for that whether or not you root for or against Harvard.

Re: ECAC D1 Women's Hockey 2014-15 Season

Suggesting a new assignment for our statistics mavens (I really enjoy your conversations and controversies about fun with hockey statistics): first, can you calculate how closely the current goalie stats above correlate to the current ECAC standings? Eyeballing it, it seems very close. Then can you adjust Maschmeyer's stats as outlined above to reflect her cupcake-free diet. Then can you adjust everybody's stats to reflect precisely which teams they've played so far (like sabremetricians adjusting baseball players' stats for the parks that they play in). And then break out stats for ECAC and non-ECAC opponents since the ECAC pool has a larger sample size and is less heterogeneous in opponents and opponents' opponents than the non-ECAC pool. And finally, for extra credit, you can try to address the chicken-and-egg question to what extent does strong goalie performance make team defense statistically better and to what extent does strong skater performance make goalie stats statistically better?

(This post may reflect the tendency of humanities concentrators to assume we can set the parameters for other people's discussions about topics that they are expert in and we know nothing about, but maybe it will be fun to think about).
