ECAC 2023-2024: New year, new ice

Clarkson and St. Lawrence have tough schedules the next three weekends. In addition to playing each other twice this weekend, they each play Colgate and Cornell at home; and then at Quinnipiac / Princeton the following two weekends. Six games each in three weekends against the current top six teams in ECAC. Colgate, Cornell, and Quinnipiac are done playing each other during the regular season, with each playing only two top five teams - Clarkson and St. Lawrence - the rest of the way.

Should be some really exciting hockey between these teams. And the rest of the league teams will be playing for playoff positions, so I expect some exciting competitive games. And don't count out an upset or more the next four weekends!

Great home win by the Saints; first win since ‘21 I think they said, so would not expect a repeat on the road tonight, but who knows. Clarkson just looks unstoppable to me. Their defense is just killer. I think they scored 2 EAGs vs. Qpac, and they looked to do the same yesterday. League stats are inflated when ‘Gate and Cornell put up double digits on opponents, and then Colgate loses 1-0 vs. Clarkson. Gotta put your money where your mouth is. Cheel looms large for the Raiders against Clarkson’s goalie. ‘Gate can shut out weaker opponents but gives up its fair share against stiffer competition.

There were some interesting upsets or splits recently. In addition to St. Lawrence splitting with Clarkson, Quinnipiac lost on the road to Yale (in OT) and to Brown. RPI beat Union in non-conference Saturday for the Mayor's Cup. Harvard at Union is still coming up Wednesday evening.

This weekend (2/2 - 2/3):
Fri. 6PM: Cornell at SLU -- Colgate at Clarkson -- Brown at Union -- Yale at RPI
Sat 3PM: Colgate at SLU -- Cornell at Clarkson -- Yale at Union -- Brown at RPI -- Dartmouth at Harvard -- Princeton at Quinnipiac

In the PWR, five teams are in the top 8 - Colgate (2), Clarkson (4), Cornell (6), St. Lawrence (7), and Quinnipiac (8). Since 4 of them are playing each other, though, some may have to move up or down. This is the third-to-last weekend of conference play. Who knows what ECAC playoffs will then do in terms of results and rankings.

The Cornell @ Clarkson and Colgate @ St.Lawrence games this afternoon will determine who comes out of the weekend at the top of the league (Clarkson or Colgate). Places 3-5 will remain unchanged (St.Lawrence, Cornell, Quinnipiac) regardless of today's results. Should be some exciting games today.

Despite losing 2 games in the North Country 3-1and 3-2, Colgate remains on top when Cornell shuts out Clarkson 3-0 despite Clarkson outshooting Cornell 43 - 16.

The top four teams (Clarkson, Colgate, Cornell, St. Lawrence) end their regular season match-ups pretty much equal, each with 3 wins and 3 losses.

Against each other in league games, Clarkson and Colgate got 10 points based on their 3 regulation wins, 2 regulation losses, and 1 overtime loss. Cornell and St. Lawrence got 8 points with their 2 regulation wins, 3 regulation losses, and 1 overtime win. Only St. Lawrence managed a win against each of the other three teams.

I still haven't figured out St. Lawrence. Early in the season I was predicting they could have a serious run at the final four, then they put in some stinker weekends, now they seem to be back on track?

Results (2/2 - 2/3):
Fri.: Cornell 1 at SLU 2 -- Colgate 1 at Clarkson 3 -- Brown 4 at Union 2 -- Yale 1 at RPI 4
Sat: Colgate 2 at SLU 3 (OT) -- Cornell 3 at Clarkson 0 -- Yale 4 at Union 0 -- Brown 0 at RPI 2 -- Dartmouth 2 at Harvard 0 -- Princeton 1 at Quinnipiac 3

RPI takes 6 points, and SLU picks up 5 points on the weekend. Colgate, Clarkson, and Cornell each have a tougher weekend, Cornell and Clarkson getting splits, though one of Colgate's losses was in OT, making a difference for standings and PWR.

The standings have Colgate, Clarkson, SLU, and Cornell as the top 4. The PWR for ECAC teams in the top 8 nationally is the same as it was a few days ago: Colgate (2), Clarkson (4), Cornell (6), St. Lawrence (7), and Quinnipiac (8).

A big 2nd-to-last ECAC weekend -
FRI.: Brown at Harvard -- Yale at Dartmouth -- SLU at Quinnipiac -- Clarkson at Princeton -- Union at Colgate -- RPI at Cornell
Sat.: Yale at Harvard -- Brown at Dartmouth -- Clarkson at Quinnipiac -- SLU at Princeton -- RPI at Colgate -- Union at Cornell

Top 4 in standings:
Colgate (46 pts)
Clarkson (44.5)
St. Lawrence (42)
Cornell (38)

Ranked matchups include the SLU, Clarkson, Quinnipiac, and Princeton games.

Results (2/9 - 2/10):
Fri: Brown 3 at Harvard 1 -- Yale 4 at Dartmouth 0 -- SLU 4 at Quinnipiac 3 (OT) -- Clarkson 1 at Princeton 0 (OT) -- Union 2 at Colgate 3 -- RPI 0 at Cornell 1 (OT)
- a lot of overtime!

Sat: Yale 3 at Harvard 0 -- Brown 3 at Dartmouth 3 (OT) -- Clarkson 2 at Quinnipiac 1 (OT) -- SLU 3 at Princeton 1 -- RPI 0 at Colgate 2 -- Union 1 at Cornell 3
- Colgate is now 3.5 points ahead of Clarkson in the standings with 2 games left. Clarkson won both their games in OT this weekend.

Coming up next weekend (2/16 - 2/17):
Fri: Harvard at SLU -- Dartmouth at Clarkson -- Cornell at Brown -- Colgate at Yale -- Princeton at Union -- Quinnipiac at RPI
Sat: Dartmouth at SLU -- Harvard at Clarkson -- Colgate at Brown -- Cornell at Yale -- Quinnipiac at Union -- Princeton at RPI
- should be a challenging weekend for Harvard, Dartmouth, Brown, and Yale
- at least one regulation win would ensure that Colgate gets a regular-season championship (if they complete that it would be their 2nd all-time, after 2020-21)

The 1-4, 5-8, and 9-12 groupings are now set. Next weekend will decide only the order of teams in each of the three groups.

Lots of close games this past weekend, with five going to overtime. Solid performances by teams from the top to the bottom of the league.

Regular season is over in the ECAC. Congrats to Gate.

2 Clarkson
3 SLU
4 Cornell

First Round one and done next weekend

12 Harvard at 5 Quinnipiac
11 Union at 6 Yale
10 Dartmouth at 7 Princeton

Princeton at Clarkson
Yale at SLU
Quinnipiac at Cornell

I expect that RPI at Brown will be a heckuva good game. Two teams that seem to have gotten stronger as the season went on, and neither will want to see the season end next weekend. Brown won the first game 4-3 at home, RPI took the second 2-0 and shots were very even in both games.

With a 6-0 win at Brown, Colgate takes the regular-season title! Clarkson ends the season a half-point behind them, and SLU and Cornell are 3rd and 4th. Cornell also wins the Ivy season title with a 2-1 regulation win at Yale. Congrats to the Colgate and Cornell duo! (The ECAC, CHA, and NEWHA are all done with their regular seasons, with two more games for each team in Hockey East and the WCHA; standings.)

The ECAC schedule looks to have all 4 first-round games, mentioned by vicb and hab, to be played next Sat Feb 24 at 3PM.

The first game RPI played at Brown ended with a Brown win but the score was 3-2 after RPI had led early and for most of the game. You are right though, this one could be the closest match up of the 4 games (as an 8-9 seed match should be) which might come down simply to which goal tender plays best to her potential.

ECAC RS Title is clinched and no mention on the women’s front page the next day. Or the day after that. Or the day after that. But today we’re looking at a blurry picture of Ivy League Champion Cornell (congrats), and CHA RS Champion Penn State. I recall the same last year, except it was the WCHA Champion’s picture posted well after the ECAC regular season had ended. Meaningless, but annoying.

The article does mention the WCHA and ECAC regular season titles, admittedly without a lot of fanfare.
On Colgate: "The Raiders secured their third ECAC regular season Championship with a 6-0 win over Brown." Their second, though, I think, according to USCHO? And on Ohio State: "The Buckeyes secured the WCHA regular season crown with the wins." It looks to be their second too.
There will probably be more info on the podcast PodKaz this week!

This past season, SLU made the biggest move upwards in points, while Yale suffered the largest drop. Whose roster sets up for success in 2024-25?
