ECAC 2023-2024: New year, new ice

Friday results: Harvard wins in OT against St. Lawrence, Pellicci making 52 saves for a 1-0 score. It looked to me like she was standing on her head vs Minnesota and St. Thomas, but now they have the recent win to show for it.

Clarkson wins 5-0 at Dartmouth. Princeton shuts out RPI 6-0, and Quinnipiac wins vs Union 4-1.

Clarkson (at 6-0-1) overtakes St. Lawrence (6-1-0) for 2nd place in the ECAC. They have played one fewer league game than 1st-place Colgate (8-0-0). Toward the other end Union, Dartmouth, and Harvard are tied for 9th place. Every team has at least 1 ECAC win.

correction: Harvard is 11th with 4.5 pts (1 OT win, 1 OT loss, and 1 tie). St. Lawrence is 3rd with 19 pts. Thanks to the standings on CollegeHockeyNews.com - note that the ECAC site's standings are slightly incorrect tonight. Also, in the overall "goals for," they're crediting Yale mistakenly with 6 goals the team scored in an exhibition.

Site sux BWW…also had SLU/Harvard score posted as 0-0 OT Final for a while, not to mention last week’s Pairwise ineptitude.

Two USA-Canada Rivalry Series games are coming up in Ontario, Thurs Dec 14 (7PM ET) and Sat Dec 16 (5PM ET).

”…and Danielle Serdachny (F, Colgate).”

Think she was on the Canadian Olympic team and wasn’t able to rack up any points, if I recall. Much different level than college :-/ Hope she gets on the scoresheet.

Think she was on the Canadian Olympic team and wasn’t able to rack up any points, if I recall. Much different level than college :-/ Hope she gets on the scoresheet.

It looks like in Worlds she had an assist. This is based on the Canada team stats from the IIHF (https://www.iihf.com/pdf/498/ihw4980can_83_8_0). Danielle Serdachny only got 4th-line or 13th-forward minutes. Jamie Lee Rattray - more used to the international level of play - did have more points with similar minutes.

It's true Serdachny has more time and space to work with vs defenders in college, and she knows what to do with that time and space, in any case! I would think that she would be a likely pick to go into the PWHL next year, as well as stay on as a member of Canada's national team.

Results (12/1 - 12/3):
- Harvard wins in OT vs St. Lawrence and then loses to Clarkson. Dartmouth loses to Clarkson and St. Lawrence.
- Princeton wins vs RPI and ties Union. Quinnipiac wins vs both Union and RPI.
- Yale wins twice in a home-and-home with Brown.

The top 3 teams in the standings have played only 8 league games. Those are Colgate (8-0-0 ECAC), Clarkson (7-0-1), and SLU (7-1-0, including 1 OT loss). Most other teams have played 10 to 12 games and still trail. At the start of January, Clarkson and SLU visit both Colgate and Cornell bringing their total up to 10 games.

Upcoming (12/5 - 12/10):
- Princeton at LIU, Tue; Colgate at Syracuse, Tue
- Post at Dartmouth, Wed
- Union-RPI home-and-home series (ECAC), Fri and Sat
- Yale at Penn State series, Fri and Sat
- Dartmouth at Maine, Sat
- Quinnipiac at Princeton (ECAC), Sat
- Brown at UNH, Sun
Going to be intriguing to see how Princeton rebounds from a disappointing tie. They have the game at LIU before hosting travel partner Quinnipiac later in the week.

Results (12/5 - 12/10):
- Princeton wins at LIU, Tue (including Fillier scoring a powerplay goal, short-handed goal, and even-strength goal)
- Colgate wins handily at Syracuse, Tue
- Post is defeated at Dartmouth, Wed
- Union-RPI home-and-home series (ECAC), Fri and Sat, swept by Union
- Yale at Penn State series, Fri and Sat, a split
- Dartmouth loses at Maine, Sat
- Quinnipiac wins 6-5 in OT at Princeton (ECAC), Sat
- Brown pulls off a win at UNH, Sun
Now Quinnipiac rises in the standings to 2nd. Colgate stays in 1st, while Colgate, Clarkson, SLU, and Cornell still haven't played many ECAC games.

At 14-2-1 overall, Colgate has slightly topped its overall record through 17 games from last year. (The difference is one of this year's losses was in OT.) Clarkson has its strongest overall record through the season's first 20 games ever. Quinnipiac's record is just shy of last season's at this time. Games pick up again Dec. 29, with Colgate in the four-team "Battle" in Pittsburgh, then LIU at Quinnipiac (Dec 30), and Dartmouth at UNH (Dec 31) to close out 2023.

Results to end 2023 and start 2024 are:
- Colgate wins the Battle of the Burgh, defeating Robert Morris and Bemidji State
- Quinnipiac shuts out LIU, Dartmouth shuts out UNH, and Union shuts out St. Michael's
- Yale loses in OT to Northeastern on Tuesday
- Also on Tue, Harvard beats Sacred Heart; on Wed, Dartmouth loses to Franklin Pierce in the 1st non-conference win this season for any NEWHA team

Upcoming this weekend & early next week:
- St. Lawrence at Colgate, Clarkson at Cornell, Fri; Clarkson at Colgate, St. Lawrence at Cornell, Sat (4 ECAC games)
- UMD at Quinnipiac series, Fri-Sat, which should be a good matchup
- Princeton vs Providence, Friendship Series, Belfast, Ireland, Fri-Sat

Further non-conference:
- Yale at Mercyhurst series, Fri-Sat
- Union at Penn State series, Fri-Sat
- Vermont at RPI series, Fri-Sat
- RIT at Brown series, Fri-Sat
- Syracuse at Colgate, Tue morning
- Brown at UConn, Tue

The IIHF U18 Women's World Championship is going on in Zug, Switzerland Jan 6-Jan 14 with coverage in Zug from Nicole Haase on https://victorypress.org/. Some rosters are here via Hockey Canada. Analysis of the USA roster also is here: it includes skaters planning to go to Colgate, Yale, Harvard, and Princeton among ECAC schools.

Here's a summary of results, Fri 1/5 - Tue 1/9 -
ECAC results:

Saturday: Clarkson 1 at Colgate 0

- After Clarkson's win, do folks think that they are the better team?

In watching the game thru my green and gold lenses, IMHO while Clarkson won the game, I thought Colgate controlled more of the play, especially in the 2nd period. If not for the play of Michele Pasiechnyk in the Clarkson nets (and the help of 2 posts), Colgate wins that game. Does this one game make one team better than the other, definitely not. Colgate today is where Clarkson was in the 2000 teens, they can score in bunches, play good defense and have excellent goaltending. The one thing Clarkson is lacking that Colgate has is a number of higher scoring players. In ECAC play, Colgate is the top scoring team in the ECAC at 5.2 goals/game, Clarkson is 4th at 3.40 goals/game. In 10 league games, Colgate has 9 players scoring 3 or more goals, Clarkson has 5. Clarkson is #1 in goals allowed at 1.00/game and Colgate is 2nd at 1.30/game. In 22 overall games played, Colgate has 5 players with 10 or more goals, and 10 with 7 or more goals; Clarkson has 2 and 6 respectively. Colgate is #1 with 5.18 Goals/game and Clarkson is #4 at 3.64 goals/game. Clarkson is #1 in goals allowed at 1.00 and Colgate #2 at 1.32. Not saying it is a lock that one of these 2 teams will win the ECAC Regular Season title or the ECAC Championship. Now that Cornell beat Clarkson, I will be interested in seeing how the Cornell-Colgate series goes this weekend. And you cannot count out Yale, Quinnipiac or Princeton and maybe even SLU.

Thanks for the perspective, vicb. I agree in feeling like Colgate with Kaltounkova and Serdachny is much like Clarkson was with Loren Gabel. They have taken over the position of being slight favorites, able to score in bunches. Some changes have been seen in the rankings of the gray and maroon and the green and gold teams since when Colgate was underdogs vs them in the national championship. Cornell's in the mix too and, yeah, is about to play Colgate twice. The stats you cite seem to show Clarkson has consistently the best defense in the league. I haven't seen that game on espn+, but sounds like Pasiechnyk was big.

Yes, it's only halfway or less through the ECAC season, though, many teams having played 10 out of 22 ECAC games.

I feel like Clarkson had Colgate really well scouted and exposed some of the weaknesses in their play. Colgate looked decent, but it didn't look their best in the Clarkson game. I say that with a Colgate bias as they are the team I follow and support. It'll be interesting to see how the Cornell series goes this weekend. It always seems like the standings come down to the last weekends in the ECAC so I don't know that anyone has a lock yet and I think most teams in our conference can beat another team on the right day.

Was disappointed in the outcome of the Clarkson game. Again, playing at home made no difference. Our strong pp was silenced, just like all of our scorers. Not sure why a win over Colgate mattered more than a loss to Cornell. Makes me think the polls are bsh*t. Colgate needs to even that series big time. Cornell defeated Clarkson in OT…I am having a hard time with this 3 on 3 format and think Gate could handle Clkn’s goalie better without her defense to help her out. But what always rings true is that defense wins championships, and the Knights make up for their offense with that. Scoring 12 against Syracuse is meaningless to me when we get shut out at home just days before.

Colgate Raiders take their Friday game at Cornell 6-3. Winning at Harvard, Quinnipiac pulls into sole 3rd place past Cornell (now 5th). St. Lawrence takes 4th shutting out Union.

You forgot, Clarkson 3 RPI 1, Clarkson remains in second. ;-D

I have watched most of RPI's games, and Clarkson stands out as the toughest opponent they have faced. The Engineers played well in the second and third periods of this game, and yet, without some great saves by Rampado (and help from the goalposts on a few occassions) the score could have been worse.

Clarkson feels like the team to beat. Colgate goaltending varies, depending on the opponent, and gave up 3 to SLU and Cornell. That’s just another early exit from the NCAA tournament imo.

Some Saturday results: There were wins today for Colgate (staying in 1st place), Clarkson (2nd), and Quinnipiac (3rd). Colgate remains 0.5 point ahead of Clarkson. Colgate shut out Cornell in Hamilton, Clarkson shut out Union, and Quinnipiac beat Dartmouth. It sounds like at least one Clarkson fan thinks Colgate is the top team, and a Colgate fan thinks Clarkson is, which shows mutual respect ; )

St. Lawrence (4th) shut out RPI, while Cornell is lagging (5th), and Princeton pulls into 6th with a 4-1 win at Harvard. (Yale and Brown off.)

Besides ECAC regular season and playoffs, there is the question of where the teams are in the Pairwise, toward the eventual goal of making the national tournament. Cornell has been around the line of the at-large bid for a while. Quinnipiac, UMD, and St. Cloud State are ahead of them in Pairwise, though, and all three appear pretty strong to me from seeing them in some periods or games. Still a lot of hockey to be played!

Tue. results:
Northeastern 1 - Harvard 0 (Beanpot 1st round)
St. Lawrence 6 - Syracuse 3

Upcoming:
Fri. 6pm: Clarkson at Yale -- SLU at Brown -- Cornell at Princeton -- Colgate at Quinnipiac -- Harvard at RPI -- Dartmouth at Union

Tue 5pm: Harvard v BC (Beanpot 3rd-place game)

All teams are playing against teams that they've already played this season.

Current top 4: Colgate (33 pts), Clarkson (32.5), Quinnipiac (29), and St. Lawrence (28)

Kate Monihan (Princeton) and Danielle Serdachny (Colgate) are nominated for the Hockey Humanitarian Award.

Results:
Fri.: Clarkson 4 at Yale 1 -- SLU 4 at Brown 0 -- Cornell 5 at Princeton 3 -- Colgate 5 at Quinnipiac 0 -- Harvard 2 at RPI 1 -- Dartmouth 4 at Union 2
Sat: SLU 4 at Yale 2 -- Clarkson 4 at Brown 2 -- Colgate 6 at Princeton 0 -- Cornell 4 at Quinnipiac 3 -- Dartmouth 1 at RPI 5

Top of the standings currently: Colgate (39 pts), Clarkson (38.5), St. Lawrence (34), and Cornell (29) and Quinnipiac (29) - each also in PWR top 10
Colgate notably got shutouts in both games, as Kayle Osborne and Hannah Murphy rotated in net. Emma-Sofie Nordstrom of SLU also had a shutout at Brown.

Harvard won in a shootout over BC, at the Bruins' rink, to take 3rd place in the Beanpot.

Upcoming (Fri 1/26 - Wed 1/31):
Fri. 6pm: Princeton at Brown -- Quinnipiac at Yale -- Clarkson at SLU -- Harvard at Colgate -- Dartmouth at Cornell
Sat 3pm: Quinnipiac at Brown -- Princeton at Yale -- SLU at Clarkson -- Dartmouth at Colgate -- Harvard at Cornell -- Union at RPI
Wed 6pm: Harvard at Union

The games between St. Lawrence and Clarkson should be especially intriguing.
