Ebola - all or nothing?

Re: Ebola - all or nothing?

This is from the CDC's own website:

Ebola is spread through droplets.

Droplet spread happens when germs traveling inside droplets that are coughed or sneezed from a sick person enter the eyes, nose, or mouth of another person. Droplets travel short distances, less than 3 feet (1 meter) from one person to another.
A person might also get infected by touching a surface or object that has germs on it and then touching their mouth or nose.
Droplet spread diseases include: plague, Ebola.

so "spread through contact with an infected person's bodily fluids" includes mucus?

Re: Ebola - all or nothing?

Just to be clear - she IS following safety protocols established by the CDC for every [non-military] worker who has been over there. What she is not following is the quarantine [protocol of the US Army for soldiers returning from duty in West Africa]

Can you please explain to us how the Ebola virus knows whether the person it is infecting is part of the US military or a civilian?

Can you explain to me why a military institution that can order people to their certain death or otherwise violate constitutional protections like due process regarding its service members might have stricter protocols than necessary?

Re: Ebola - all or nothing?

so it either does spread like colds and flu, does not or they are not sure?
which is it? color me confused.

If a person who is contagious (remember, you can walk around with Ebola for up to 21 days and not be contagious) sneezes into your mouth (or vagina or butthole if you're having strange sex with that contagious person) then you could possibly catch it.

Have you been around any people showing signs that they have Ebola? Have they sneezed into your mouth? If yes, you should report to your emergency room. If not, you should relax and think of calamities more likely to befall you - like getting struck by lightning while you are marrying Kim Cardashian.

Re: Ebola - all or nothing?

That school board is stupid.

I dare you to declare that there's no difference between a girl who visited Nigeria and a nurse who treated known Ebola patients in Sierra Leone.

They are different. However, the nurse who has treated the Ebola patients is undergoing the same safety protocols as every other worker returning from impacted areas. The same protocols that have been in place for ages. Again, what she is NOT doing is responding to a politician arbitrarily mandating additional protocols because he wants to score political points days before an election.

Something tells me if this was Obama demanding to round people up for "quarantine" days before an election the usual suspects would be all over him and declaring him a dictator imposing Martial Law.

There's no question about that.

There is a difference. But the overreaction to the nurse is what leads to decisions like the one the school board made. And some of that is intentionally encouraged by the fear mongers.

Our brave Governor LePage now says it's OK for Kaci Hickox to leave her house, but if she tries to go anywhere where there are people he will do everything in his power to stop her. Which is a perfectly reasonable response. We wouldn't want an outbreak like they saw in New York City after that doctor rode the subway and later had Ebola-like symptoms.

I wouldn't have any problem giving her a hug and having dinner with her. A kiss might be out, since she has a boyfriend...

the point of the new CDC memo, from what I understood, was that the virus could remain alive on a doorknob or handle or other surface and later be touched by someone else and transferred to their noses, eyes or mouth, ala colds and flu. the nurse in Maine wouldnt be much of a threat as she doesnt have ebola, but if this CDC memo is correct we dodged a bullet from the doctor who was running around New York.

I guess the difference would be a person can be shedding cold/flu virus before showing symptoms, while that is not the case with ebola.

If he had shown symptoms of Ebola, he would have gone to the hospital. That's what this whole "self-monitoring" thing is all about. If workers take their temperature or start to show other signs and think they MIGHT be infected, they go to the hospital. If not, they live a normal life.
