Eastern D-III hockey -- where do we go from here???

Re: Eastern D-III hockey -- where do we go from here???

My spies say Yes

Says a lot that they hold the meeting, apparently make a decision and then choose not to tell anybody about an issue that impacts a very large group of other schools. In that regard, it doesn't matter which way the decision went (yes, no, study more) - it's just rude.

Re: Eastern D-III hockey -- where do we go from here???

We all know that the NESCAC is the pure and academically elite conference, so what is preventing them from dropping their membership in total to the crass, money grubbing NCAA and just staying the insular NESCAC? They would be able to focus totally on their own programs, and not have to divert resources to such things as NCAA championship travel, travel outside New England,(watch out Hamilton:eek: ), recruiting, scheduling outside of conference, and those overlapping sports seaons. I'm sure that the lax teams would like that too.

Re: Eastern D-III hockey -- where do we go from here???

Knowing what sort of comments this will generate, I'll still add a response.

The Middlebury president spoke at last seasons pre-game meeting, and his comments certainly indicated he has no desire to drop Norwich from the schedule.
I suspect each school may have one or two opponents they also want to keep.

To be fair, the comments shown below regarding getting to post-season play against opponents "with many more games/contests under their belts before post-season play" doesn't really apply to hockey. The difference is one regular season game in most cases (does anyone still do the first to three points thing?).

Unless Midd were to drop their Christmas/New Year's tournament, they'd only have two games left free to schedule - They'd have an 18 game league schedule, two in the PL, two in their tournament, that would make 22. Assuming they'd keep NU and Platty, they would be locked in every year, with the only variety in their schedule coming from the PL invitee (if they play them) and their Holiday guests.

As for the three point series, it only happens in the NCHA first round and the MCHA first round.

Maybe he grants Norwich, as founder of the American System of Education (the most advanced and successful education system in the world, the education students throughout the world seek) special status. ;)

Middlebury's first regular game last season was on Nov. 20, Plattsburgh's first game was on October 30, by Nov. 20, Plattsburgh was starting their Sixth regular game.

By the post season, they've caught up.

In terms of total games played, but, of course, not in terms of weeks played/practiced.

If anything they are fresher. The one thing I like about the NESCAC philosophy is the schedule. I like the concentrated season. More game would be nice, but that's not going to happen.

Blasphemy  (or maybe your educator roots) ;)

Got to agree that it really is obnoxious for the NESCAC not to be a little more transparent and upfront about its decision-making process on this issue. I can't see the rationale for this level of secrecy about a decision that has a big impact on a bunch of outside parties (all the ECAC East schools).

I mentioned this earlier too about the NESCAC taking responsibility for the D-II schools as well, once they break the interlock the D-II schools will get tossed from the East and then you have got a lot of changes going on that have been talked about at length.

I think the NESCAC likes to be the center of attention, and love the fact that at this moment they are in control of so many other teams. It plays into their ego big time, and I am sure they feel that this is the way the world was supposed to be with all "lesser" schools like Norwich, Skidmore and Babson waiting to hear from them so that they can attempt to reach the top of Mountain (which is where God put the NESCAC).

The fact that NUProf and d3 were not properly notified (obviously a grave oversight:rolleyes: ) does not indicate that the people who needed to know (i.e. ECAC) were not.:D :D :D

3rdLiner...very interesting view of the world...(of hockey anyway!)

This has all been too much fun already!!:)

Why no public announcement - that's my gripe. Why not at least notify, USCHO? It is big (bad) news in the (small) D3 hockey world.

Aren't there more D-III hockey schools than D-I/II combined??

In view of the fact that the NESCAC disseminates press releases on every other issue, large and small, there is no bona fide excuse for the secrecy on this issue. .

Re: Eastern D-III hockey -- where do we go from here???

So let me get this straight;right now that the interlock is over a team like Norwich will now play 18 East contests then 2 tournaments (4) Games and will look to possibly play Middlebury twice and have one more out of conference game to play and that is NU's schedule in a nutshell.

When they get rid of St. A's and St. Mikes that means they will get to play another four games out of conference correct?

Re: Eastern D-III hockey -- where do we go from here???

If it is true that the interlock is over, and Charlie would be in a position to know, the schedule for Midd and NESCAC teams wouldn't be all bad. I like the idea of home and away against conference opponents. The rivalries get better and the paybacks can come in the same season even before the playoffs. I won't miss the two D-2 teams that don't count for NCAA considerations, nor will I miss some of the other ECAC East teams that are rarely competitive. I will miss games against Babson, NEC, Skidmore, etc.. For Midd, we'll likely continue to see Norwich at the Primelink and perhaps on a Tuesday night in Jan or Feb. I would guess we'll see USM over the New Year's tourney given the brothers both coaching. Maybe we'll see Castleton or Skidmore on a Tuesday night, too. Perhaps the Primelink will be the only chance to see Plattsburgh and Norwich some seasons in order to find room for other foes? Seeing teams like Bowdoin, Colby, Amherst, Williams, Hamilton and Trinity at home every season will be exciting. Yeah, Conn, Tufts, Wes might be ho-hum, but no reason to believe they won't be getting better.

Re: Eastern D-III hockey -- where do we go from here???

...or maybe Charlie doesn't know and that's why there has been no official release...maybe it has yet to be decided! :D

BTW, if you do your research and check out the news releases on the NESCAC web you will see that they are always only about student-athletes...never any NR about admin stuff, etc...
