Eastern Bias- Blizzard stories

Well, if they can argue about the weather out in the midwest we might as well do it out here. Right now we have 2 ft of snow, howling winds and for now, power :insert grateful emoticon: We also have no hockey, a statewide ban on all travel and it is still coming down.

Re: Eastern Bias- Blizzard stories

It appears to be winding down here. At least 2' deep and drifts the size of small buildings. Just an incredible amount of snow in a period of 18-24 hours. First report of a roof collapse just came on the news too. It'll be a fun weekend for sure.

Re: Eastern Bias- Blizzard stories

Its wild here, 60mph gusts, snowing hard, probably 18inches to 2ft hard to tell with the wind, 10 degrees so plowing in an open cab tractor isn't much fun. Glad its light fluffy snow so it moves pretty easily. Got part of my driveway plowed out, had to stop when my face felt like it was frostbite time. Woodstove is cranking so I'm warm. My dog had to circle in the snow many times before he could get it packed down enough to take a dump:D.

There is a snow drift out back that's taller than I am.

Only a relative handful of people live in the Midwest as compared with the megalopolis we have on the eastern seaboard.

This is what happens when you go out in the height of a blizzard and get stuck in a snowdrift:

OK, that's impressive (at least to a non-yooper). Good luck all!

And Wally, the historical average is about 50 inches total, but it has been much less in recent years. Nothing like anywhere with lake effect snowfall.

I thought it was less than ours I think we're around 70 inches but we haven't had that in years either.

Let me know when a Yooper has to deal with the heavy wet stuff... and when its a storm like this, its all going to be heavy wet snow.

90 minutes ago I shoveled a path to the dog kennel for our dogs...there is now 5" of snow there. In 90 minutes. And we still have 4-6 hours to go.

The 6' drift:

Me, shoveling the dog kennel. I was wearing lots of layers...felt like Randy in A Christmas Story "I can't put my arms down!" That snow drift you see behind me against the house next door is easily 7' high.

Thanks... that's a full-size 97 Chevy under there!

The problem is it's halfway down the hill with a huge pile in front of the blade. The plow rode up and I think the front axle is buried in the berm underneath the truck. I couldn't go forward or backward; even tried angling the blade against the pile to help push. No dice. First time in over 30 years I've done that.

That happened about 10 last night. I think it was the height of the storm here with total white-out. First time in over 30 years I've done that. Up behind the house where I plowed to bare pavement has another 12-18" on average. Over 4' high against the garage door making it a bit hard to get at the snowblower. Momma is out there trying to cut a path to the garage for me. I went out and only made it about 10 feet from the gate before I was out of breath (emphysema is no picninc). If she makes it to the garage I'll see what I can do with my 20+ year old snowblower.

I love New England winters!
