East Regional: #1 Denver v. #4 RIT; #2 Cornell v. #3 New Hampshire

Re: East Regional: #1 Denver v. #4 RIT; #2 Cornell v. #3 New Hampshire

If RIT can jam up the neutral zone, avoid turnovers, stay out of the penalty box and play with intensity there's no doubt they could spring the upset.

The talent gap isn't the issue to me. The issue is Denver has been battle tested with 24 games against TUC's (15-7-2) and R.I.T hasn't played a single game against a Top 25 team.

So we really don't know how R.I.T. will react under pressure. That being said, R.I.T. has nothing to lose. Denver has everything to lose.

If anyone is to upset Denver, they'll need to absolutely shut down the top line, get outstanding goaltending, and figure out a way to slip a couple of goals past Chevy. Cornell is the only team in this region that has a chance of doing it, but I don't see it.

Re: East Regional: #1 Denver v. #4 RIT; #2 Cornell v. #3 New Hampshire

One thing I don't expect is the RIT juniors and seniors to be intimidated by Denver. They were in the class that defeated Minnesota in their own building and for 2 periods was in a close game with BC less than 24 hours later. That class also defeated Cornell at the Blue Cross Arena.

I expect a somewhat close game - something along the lines of 2-1. If RIT plays like they did this past weekend as the only #1 seed to win their conference tournament, Denver will need to play well or else we will see the upset.

Re: East Regional: #1 Denver v. #4 RIT; #2 Cornell v. #3 New Hampshire

I grew up in Ithaca and was raised on Cornell Hockey. I also attended UNH and have spent many Friday and Saturday nights at the Whit cheering for the 'Cats. However on this Friday I will be screaming out "Red" during the national anthem along with everyone else who will be wearing Red. (A tradition at Lynah since before I was born)

I remember 2003 in Buffalo (and 2002 in Worcester) very well and therefore would never presume to say that there is a guaranteed win for either Cornell or UNH. Having said that however, it might benefit UNH fans to concentrate on cheering for their team to score rather then on what the Lynah Faithful shout during the anthem.

Do you think if we concentrate more on cheering for goals that it'll work? If so, it might be worth a shot, and maybe that's what we've been missing the last few games. I wish we had more fans in the stands at the Whittemorgue who concentrated on cheering for goals :p Welcome to the board CU@UNH!

You also have to remember that players often know each other from previous levels of hockey. One of the RIT dads was telling me about the Denver players his son had played against at various times.

In your section, they cheer for things that can make goals happen, for hard work, and they cheer when the team looks tired, to hopefully reenergize them. That's what fans should do, IMO. :D

In the rest of the Whit, they sit on their hands and the only thing they cheer for is goals. Grrrrr.

Re: East Regional: #1 Denver v. #4 RIT; #2 Cornell v. #3 New Hampshire

The regionals are always tough and great goaltending can make all the difference. Denver is coming off a bad weekend. It is a team that can drift at times but when they buckle down they are very very tough and control the flow of the game.

This team is capable of really getting all cylinders running. I do not think intimadation of anyone is an issue. The speed of transition game, shots on net and goaltending will be.

It is also a fine group of hoby award canidates. who will dominate. Look for Rhett R. to be fired up.

Re: East Regional: #1 Denver v. #4 RIT; #2 Cornell v. #3 New Hampshire

DU will definitely be without Anthony Maiani for this weekend. Anthony played wing on DU's 2nd line. Maiani had a slow start, but is 8-26-34 for the season.

The talent level gap will be a big deal. This isn't just the usual case where RIT's top line is close but depth isn't there... Denver is exceptional across the board. If Denver brings their A game (or quite possibly their B game) I don't see RIT's best effort being enough.

However, hockey is a funny game and you get strange bounces. It is often better to be lucky than good. If RIT manages the first goal, gets the crowd on their side, and Denver starts to tighten up in the "How can we possibly be DOWN to these guys in an elimination tournament" there's a chance. An upset will require RIT's very best effort plus a bit of stumbling on Denver's part... which will take some considerable luck IMO.

That doesn't mean it can't happen. We've seen it before, and in the past RIT has given it's very best game when facing large talent mismatches. The Minnesota, Cornell, and St Lawrence victories come to mind. Plus you never know if DeMichael has a virtuoso performance like Guimond did against St. Lawrence (66 saves in a win... tieing an NCAA record). Still the odds are very long. No matter what, so long as they don't lie down... and I can't see that happening... I'll be proud of my Tigers come Friday evening.

I think UNH is going to have a hard time with Cornell - I just don't like the match-ups for UNH.

However, if UNH gets through to a UNH-DU game, it will be interesting, as it sounds like DU likes up tempo hockey and UNH is always happier up tempo.

Hoping for a little luck:

I can't leave Manchester, NH until 2:45pm on Friday. Anybody going to be headed towards Albany at that time? I know it's late, but still able to make the 6:30pm game.

Please private message me . . .

Re: East Regional: #1 Denver v. #4 RIT; #2 Cornell v. #3 New Hampshire

Also do you have to yell out RED during the SSB?

Not only do we have to do it, but you'll probably here a few other ones yelled out in Albany. At the finals this weekend, we heard:

Oh say can U see - by Union
The rocket's RED glare - by Cornell
Gave proof throught the KNIGHTS - by a few Clarkson fans.

The last one was met my a signirficant number of SUCKs from the St. Lawrence and Cornell fans.

It won't surprise me either if it's a close game. DU simply hasn't blown teams out this year. They've played a ton of one and two goal games. But it's a "good news, bad news" deal. They have been very, very good in those games.

I was thinking 3-1 or 4-2, with an empty-netter at the end.

I think the most important thing to consider when wondering about an upset is momentum; RIT is peaking at the right time (for once) and on the longest winning streak in men's D-I. Denver just dropped two in a row. That's our best chance, because it all depends on how the two teams react to those trends.

Must be an ECAC thing-the"red" the "U" the "knight"- Whatever. I was seeing if I could get some good-natured fan banter going here-successfull -I think. What about that Andy Bernard character from "The Office" claiming Cornell as his alma mater -kind of annoyingly funny isn't he? About hockey:GO BLUE:)

RIT does "home of the TIGERS!!" at the end for home games. I suspect it will carry over to Albany. I don't think I've heard any others than the ECAC teams you mentioned. The question on respect for the national anthem has been raised, but I think most are OK with the RIT ritual since it is at the very end of the song.

Not ENTIRELY true... I've heard cheering for good hits - or bad hits, if we haven't been hittig. And, of course, on really stressful nights, the cheers can get pretty loud just for clearing the puck. I remember a few times a UNH player skated the puck out of the zone and the crowd lost it, like he was going to carry it all the way. It's a sad day for your club when...

Don't fool yourself, the middle one got some "love" too.

Looking forward to some of the school specific cheering this weekend. Here's hoping RIT's "e to the x" makes it's Div 1 NCAA Tournament debut!

Probably very similiar to the old Michigan Tech cheer and since they have some national titles it has probably already debuted. With Tech's recent history it all depends how long they have been doing it, but I am 99.99% sure it has been longer than RIT has had hockey.

e^x dx dy

PI, PI, Radical Mu
Beat'm Beat'm MTU

RPI has a version of this also, I think it came after the Michigan Tech version. I don't know if they still do it, they follow 3.14159 with roots and something, before something else and RPI (great way to describe a cheer, huh!)

Re: East Regional: #1 Denver v. #4 RIT; #2 Cornell v. #3 New Hampshire

Was surprised Cornell did "home of the Red" in the SSB. WCHA fans are only used to home of the sioux, which is annoying enough.
