Early speculation of a new NCAA D1 Program...........in Canada????

Re: Early speculation of a new NCAA D1 Program...........in Canada????

Cos so much of that has been happening and looks to continue to happen. Huh?
Not to mention Alabama-Huntsville out there on the independent island, nobody really doing anything for the good of NCAA Hockey there.

Re: Early speculation of a new NCAA D1 Program...........in Canada????

Well, everything is relative...that trip ... is still well over 2000 miles from Anchorage or Fairbanks to Vancouver.

More like 1325 from Anchorage, 1400 miles from Fairbanks. Just sayin'.

I feel like it would be a team out of Toronto or Montreal that would make the jump first. They are geographically closer to a lot more existing NCAA teams. Lower travel costs, more likely the NCAA and conferences bite on an "experiment" basis. For instance, Montreal (concordia, UQAM, etc) is a 2 hour drive from UVM.

One could argue that opening Canadian colleges to the NCAA could help the fight against Major Juniors as well.

From a pure hockey-viewing perspective it would be intriguing to have Canadian universities (and take note the word you want when speaking about Canadian post-secondary schools is "universities" for Canadian colleges are like U.S. junior colleges/community colleges) to match up against U.S. collegiate programs. The problem, though, is that Canadian universities and colleges provide limited funding to their athletic programs and are subject (at least in Quebec) to a myriad of provincial laws that prohibit certain advertising/sponserships on campus. Add to this the shabby conditions of their facilities and this will certainly give the NCAA cause for concern. You mentioned Concordia. Have you seen their rink? It looks like something from the 1930's. Plus you have to deal with all of the idiot anarchists that are enrolled in this sad excuse for a school. More importantly, though, have you even considered how difficult it will be for Boston University to get across the border at Philipsburg, P.Q. what with all their stand up citizens?

Sneak them through the library in Derby Line. :D

Re: Early speculation of a new NCAA D1 Program...........in Canada????

Is this just the Minnesota "No Canadians!!!" attitude or is there a real reason for it?

You realize that adding Canadian schools, especially in the West, would actually make college hockey stronger right?
For some reason some fans don't want the evil Canadians to be able to play in the NCAA which allowing a few Western Schools Canadian schools to play would actually help give other the Western Schools to include Canadian schools a chance to play college hockey and a shorter trips for the Alaska Schools as well. I don't think it would hurt either for college hockey exposure. The fans that are opposing it probably wouldn’t be playing said schools anyways.

Has nothing to do with that for me, and I am sure it's the same for many others. I just think it makes so much more sense on so many levels to expand in this country first. So much more room for potential growth and impact.

So you oppose Canadian schools playing in the NCAA?

Absolutely not. I would just prefer to see the NCAA focus all of their efforts on expanding within this country. If a Canadian school joins, that's great, but I would much rather hear that a Big Ten school, etc... joined. I think that impact on the college game would be MUCH greater.

I just don't like being labeled "anti-Canadian". Couldn't be further from the truth.

Sneak them through the library in Derby Line. :D

I LIKE IT! This man knows his U.S./Canada border crossings!

...and if the library does not work they can row in canoes to Magog on Lac Memphremagog!

Then why the heck are you crying that they should be focusing on getting American schools first to join up, instead of just any other school out there that's interested to join up?? Where's the logic in that??

Who's crying? I voiced an opinion.

I would prefer the NCAA not spend a dime or a minute recruiting Canadian schools to join until college hockey is more than just a fringe sport in this country. If you don't understand that, I honestly don't know what to tell you. But it's not worth it to me to argue about. Just wanted to point out the ignorance of Goon's comment. Throwing out labels is counter-productive.

Maybe I need to re-read the article, but I'm not following you on the "NCAA recruiting and spending money" for Canadian universities aspect. Are you suggesting that the NCAA is paying for part of or otherwise subsidizing a hockey program at SFU? Did they contribute a red cent to Penn State? Do they ever do anything like that?

The CIS teams are full of former chl players who at 20/21 are going to university for the first time and it's a growing trend . I would think not one CIS team would be able to fit the NCAA guidelines. Exhibitions vs CIS is enough. Grow your USA teams

They were comments made in a side discussion. My point is, I'd prefer to see expansion in the US first. If a Canadian school approaches the NCAA about starting a program, I would be indifferent as to whether or not they join. If they do great, but if they don't I won't lose any sleep.

I would have to imagine that the NCAA, College Hockey, Inc, or USA Hockey (in some capacity) spends some time/resources working on the expansion of the sport. Just an assumption on my part. I think 100% of these efforts should be focused on expanding the sport within this country.

Just my $0.02

Be assured that the NCAA does not plan on losing money by expanding university hockey into Canada. A large number of amateur athletes must play a lot of games to pay the salaries of NCAA executives.

I understand your point and tend to agree with you*, but you have to understand that you are likely an exception to your fanbase when it comes to being okay with Canadian Universities coming into the mix.

* I agree that we should spend money first in looking at US schools to join, but I am fully on board with trying to entice Canadian schools to join the mix. As previously stated, I think it would be a net benefit for college hockey as a whole, and could help with adding US schools further down the line.

I respect your opinion FS23. And you're right, it looks like we agree on more than we disagree on. The only thing it looks like we disagree on, and we can agree to disagree because it's a minor point, is that I wouldn't spend any time or resources trying to entice Canadian schools to join. Any and all resources would go to trying to expand in this country.

This is true, but that may take a while. Plus, you'd need something a little less conspicuous. ;) It looks like they fenced some of the forest border, at least based upon the shadows in Google Maps.

I don't think *his* fanbase is more averse to this than the average one out there.
