Early speculation of a new NCAA D1 Program...........in Canada????

Re: Early speculation of a new NCAA D1 Program...........in Canada????

You realize that adding Canadian schools, especially in the West, would actually make college hockey stronger right?

Maybe for the travel weary folks in Alaska but that's a pretty small minority.

The Canadians have their college hockey and their ways of doing things. We need to encourage more growth in the U.S.

This. I'd rather see expansion in this country. Starting with some Big Ten teams adding programs.

Pretty tough to do with Title IX and the cost. It's cheaper to start two lacrosse teams, and in most places you'll probably get the same crowd sizes. Best chance to get more growth in the US is for the NHL to continue to get more popular. Course, they're about to destroy everything they've built with the lockout.

Agreed. Not really easy to do, but I'm hopeful a few schools can find a way.

I feel like it would be a team out of Toronto or Montreal that would make the jump first. They are geographically closer to a lot more existing NCAA teams. Lower travel costs, more likely the NCAA and conferences bite on an "experiment" basis. For instance, Montreal (concordia, UQAM, etc) is a 2 hour drive from UVM.

One could argue that opening Canadian colleges to the NCAA could help the fight against Major Juniors as well.

Not really sure how this will help in the fight against Major Junior. How is having Canadian schools in the NCAA going to help stop American kids from going the CHL route?

I can't think of a way it would. More D1 openings for some borderline kids so they can move up the ranks, but it wouldn't stop the top end talent from leaving for the CHL. Likely what it would do more is (over time and with more schools adding) help advertise the NCAA route to Canadian kids. Take away the myth that all Canadian kids must go through the CHL to be successful.

Mostly it would be interesting to watch the marketing groups fight it out between the two development paths as they are geographically on top of one another, or at least the WHL anyway. A lot of fans are still holding out hope that one day PAC12 teams start to add hockey, but a common challenge is who why would a new program start when they don't have anyone to play with? If there are some existing programs on the west coast, hey why not add more? Right? Pretty please?

Can someone explain the rationale behind expanding into Canada? I don't follow why they would want to do that.

Having a few of the big schools in Canada could cause a few of the smaller less well off Major Junior programs to go belly up. Ain't most of them pretty much run on a shoestring budget??

I'll put it this way, if Canadian colleges came into the NCAA, who would it hurt?

It would likely help the Alaska schools, and could potentially help in convincing some of the other schools in the Northwest to think about starting up a program. Further, it could potentially show many Canadian kids that there are alternate routes to the NHL than the CHL (not saying that it would ever elevate college hockey over the CHL...never going to happen).

I'm all for the growth of college hockey in the United States, but I actually think bringing in Canadian schools may help with that.

Now, if one can make a legitimate argument for how it would hurt college hockey, that may change things, but right now I'm not really thinking of any reason that it would hurt. In my opinion, if we can bring in a net positive to the sport, then it is probably a good idea, especially if it means more programs in the mix.

I'm with FS23.

I would prefer American schools to join up, but at this point any new program is a good new program.

I don't see how that would cause them to go belly up. If kids aren't picking NCAA route now, why will having a few NCAA schools in Canada change that?

I don't think it will hurt college hockey to let Canadian schools into the NCAA, but I don't think it will help anything a whole lot either. I don't think it will have any effect on the CHL, and it will have much less positive effect on the NCAA than getting more American schools to join.
